Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the current Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), joined the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) in 1983 when he was a college student at the University of Asmara (UoA) in Asmara, Eritrea. The TPLF was actively fighting against Ethiopia's military government (the Derg) during this period.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus held various high-ranking government positions in Ethiopia from 2005 to 2016, during which time the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) was part of the ruling coalition. These positions included:
