California shooting suspect used fake story to gain access to school

The shooting occurred at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists in rural California

A gunman in the US state of California who shot and injured two children aged six and five at a school before fatally shooting himself used a "guise" to gain access to the school.

The children are in critical but stable condition and were being treated at a trauma centre, officials said on Thursday.

The attack happened on Wednesday at a school affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church near Oroville, California, about 55 miles (89km) from Sacramento.

Investigators said they believe the gunman targeted the school because of its affiliation with the church and was motivated as a response to the war in Gaza.

The sheriff on Thursday said a note was found detailing the gunman's motive. The note said he sought to carry out the "child executions" as a "response to America's involvement with Genocide and Oppression of Palestinians along with the attacks towards Yemen".

Authorities said the gunman had a lengthy mental health and criminal history, which included charges of theft, fraud and forgery over the years.

The shooting occurred shortly after 13:00 local time (21:00 GMT) at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists.

Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said the gunman, Glenn Litton, 56, had scheduled a meeting with a school administrator to discuss enrolling a student - the ruse police say he used to get into the school.

The meeting was seemingly cordial and Litton went on a tour, Sheriff Honea said, but things took a turn when the gunman walked towards a bathroom and started opening fire. The gunfire hit students outside a classroom, striking two kindergarten-aged children.

The gunman then turned the handgun on himself, police said. He was found dead by first responders with the firearm near his body.

The school's remaining 35 children were later transferred to a church, where they were reunited with their families.

Sheriff Honea said on Wednesday that the young victims had "very, very serious" injuries.

"I'm thankful that they are still alive but they have a long road ahead of them."

Sheriff Honea previously said investigators "have received some information that leads us to believe that the subject responsible for the shooting targeted this school because of its affiliation with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church".

He previously noted authorities believed the shooting was an isolated incident, but a state-wide alert was sent to other schools affiliated with the Seventh-Day Adventist Church out of an abundance of caution.

The church is a Protestant Christian denomination with over 21 million members worldwide. There are one million members of the church in North America, according to the North American Division of Seventh-Day Adventists.

2 kindergarteners wounded in Northern California school shooting and gunman identified, sheriff says

PALERMO – Two kindergarten students who were wounded in a school shooting in the Northern California community of Palermo have been identified along with a suspect, Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said Thursday.

Six-year-old Roman Mendez suffered two gunshot wounds that resulted in internal injuries and 5-year-old Elias Wolford was shot in the stomach and suffered internal injuries, Honea said. The boys remain in critical condition.

Litton was found by a California Highway Patrol officer Wednesday with a self-inflicted gunshot wound; a handgun was next to the suspect. The Butte County sheriff's office confirmed that the suspected shooter had died.

Latest condition of students

The two kindergarten students shot Wednesday were taken to a Sacramento-area hospital in "extremely critical condition," Honea said.

"I am thankful that they are still alive but they have a long road ahead of them," Honea said.

On Thursday, the sheriff's office said the boys were now in "critical but stable" condition.

Oroville Mayor David Pittman said in a statement that "the entire staff, students, and families have also been emotionally traumatized after this incident."

"Sadly, our schools must plan and train for these kinds of events and pray they never occur," he said. "Our schools must be safe places."

suspect in the Wednesday afternoon shooting at the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists was identified by the sheriff as 56-year-old Glenn Litton. Litton had a lengthy criminal history and attended another Adventist school as a child in the nearby town of Paradise, Honea said.

Butte County Office of Education offered to provide crisis response staff to work with local school administrators to help reopen the school.

A sixth-grade student told CBS News Sacramento that she helped her teacher comfort younger students as the gunman was outside the classroom.

What we know about the suspect

Sheriff's deputies have said they don't believe there is any connection between the suspect and the victims.

Honea said that Litton was dropped off at the school by an Uber driver. Investigators are interviewing the driver to learn more about what led up to the suspect being dropped off at the school.

Honea also added that investigators are looking into whether the suspect called the school a few days ago to schedule an appointment with an administrator on Wednesday. The reports indicate the suspect then showed up trying to enroll a child but deputies don't believe a child was with him.

After the meeting with the administrator on Wednesday, gunshots were heard, Honea said.

The shooting appears to be isolated to the Feather River School of Seventh-Day Adventists, but Honea said he provided other law enforcement agencies in California with information and told them to be vigilant in monitoring Seventh-Day Adventist schools as it appears the school may have been targeted due to its affiliation.

The students were taken to the gymnasium until authorities could bring school buses to the scene. They were then taken to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene, where they were reunited with their families.

The school serves about 35 students from kindergarten to eighth grade. Honea said there was not a security officer stationed at the school as that's not part of the everyday routine.

Palermo is a town with a population of over 5,000 people just south of Oroville. It's about 30 miles south of Chico and 65 miles north of Sacramento.

FBI responded to help the Butte County Sheriff's Office with the investigation. Gov. Gavin Newsom's office said it and other state agencies are also helping local officials.

shooter was in a meeting with an administrator about enrolling a child at the school, which he described as "cordial." But it seems that was his first visit to the school and he had no prior connection to the victims. Shortly after that, shots rang out, Honea said.

The gunman's body was found near the slide and other playground equipment on school grounds, which abut ranchland where cattle graze. A handgun was found nearby, Honea said.

The small rural school was closed Thursday but sheriff's deputies walked around the campus behind shuttered gates in the morning and staff members carried classroom items out to their cars.

Shawn Webber, an Oroville city councilmember, said the region was reeling.

"When you see this on the news or nationally and it's like, those things don't happen here. Well, yesterday (Wednesday) it happened here," he said. "It just absolutely violated the peace of our community."

It was the the latest among dozens of school shootings around the U.S. in recent years, including especially deadly ones in Newtown, Connecticut, Parkland, Florida, and Uvalde, Texas. The shootings have set off fervent debates about gun control and frayed the nerves of parents whose children have grown accustomed to doing active shooter drills in their classrooms.

But school shootings have done little to move the needle on national gun laws. Firearms were the leading cause of death among children in 2020 and 2021, according to KFF, a nonprofit that researches health care issues.

Laurie Trujillo, a spokesperson for the Northern California Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, said in a statement that they were "deeply saddened" by the shooting. She added that they were grateful to the sheriff's office for acting quickly to protect the students.

The Seventh-Day Adventist Church is a Christian denomination in which members consider the Bible their only creed and believe that the second coming of Christ is near. The Feather River School has been open since 1965, according to its website.

After the shooting, authorities rushed students to a gymnasium where they stayed until a bus took them off the grounds to the Oroville Church of the Nazarene to be reunited with their families, Honea said.

Travis Marshall, the senior pastor for the Oroville Church of the Nazarene, called the reunification between parents and their children "very moving."

"Some of the children were incredibly emotional," he said. "One woman was raising her hands up, praising the Lord" when she found her child.
