What I do know in the UK most people lived in council housing because the UK was dirt poor after WW2 and it wasn't until the late 60's and 70's that people could afford a house. The interest rates in the 80's was 15%. Of course house values have ballooned over what inflation is. But when you see fags crying because they can't buy a house in London (because they want the higher wages there) i have little sympathy for them
