Being able to have discussions like this is a privilege of the modern era, even more so with outward-facing anonymity like on 4chan. Unfortunately that's a particular niche, and the problems we've had badly on 4chan recently will be found on most other sites to some degree. Reddit's botswarm is even worse than 4chan's. Telegram and Discord are even more degenerate. Other social media sites are overmoderated, oversocialized, and offer no anonymity.

4chan got taken down by a rival imageboard hacking group called "Soyjak Party." Its databases were dumped, moderators were doxxed (proving some were federal agents), and the servers are now all offline. A few things we’ve learned (so far) from last night’s 4Chan hack:

1) Moderation (& “Janitors” i.e "Jannies") includes students and staff from Harvey Mudd College, University of Washington, & University of Michigan… including at least one professor. 2) 4Chan ran on a version of FreeBSD which has not been supported for 9 years. 3) 4Chan had over 10 Million banned users. Most of the bans were because Moderators were on a self-important power trip.

Aside from internal moderator emails, and the fact that many Admins and Moderators were government people USING .GOV EMAILS, one of the most interesting aspects of the released hacker information is that the overwhelming majority of posts on /pol/ came from Israel.

On average over 20 posts per Israeli resident. The Mossad has been running an absolute massive propaganda campaign on the American internet.

Interestingly, when an American military guy leaked Classified Intel, he did it ON 4CHAN. He ended up being caught BECAUSE 4Chan was an intel operation! He was arrested, jailed, plead guilty, and is now serving heavy prison time.

In about 2017, a new "phenomenon" appeared in the world, and did so on "4Chan." It called itself "Q."

Q, it was claimed, was a deep intel source, close to President Trump. Q was allegedly "revealing" that "The White Hats" in government had a "plan" to "save and protect" America, and everyone had to "trust the plan."

IT WAS ALL LIES. Deliberate, intelligence agency Psychological Operations to keep people docile. It became a propaganda outlet for our own deep state, Israel, China, etc.

The fallout from this enormous hack is still taking place. More and more information is coming out. As more interesting developments take place, I will run additional stories.

There is already a lot of OSS image board projects and many alternative chans exist with smaller userbases. The oportunity here is in my opinion to create a new 4chan replacement/successor which would be managed better and would have the large userbase migrated from OG 4chan. It is not a question of the code itself, but more of analyzing and solving for example the moderation problems of 4chan. It was objectively getting worse year after year, so lets come up with solutions to its problems instead of gatekeeping and shitting on it.

The main issue is really the same one you'll find anywhere on the internet: the position of moderator attracts the most power-hungry dickheads you can find out there. It's even worse on 4chan and the like because the users clearly don't respect authority figures, so the mods have to either be willing to laugh at themselves or be so utterly passive that they may as well not even exist.

But to forgo moderation entirely would mean the site would be drowned in garbage. It's not an easy problem to solve. The best first step would be to boot out anyone involved with any government agency. Glowies can get fucked.

It's a pervasive issue but I think that the best way is with a hierarchial but anonymous system of moderation. One in which there would be users, jannies, mods and admins. Users post and report, jannies can provide an initial ban plus a reason, if the user appeals this is escalated to a mod. If the appeal is obviously complete bullshit then extended ban, if it's reasonable then no change, if it's correct then user is unbanned and the janny is given a strike. Too many strikes in a month and the janny loses his position. If the janny disagrees with his strikes he can raise it to the admins who may take action against the janny or the mods depending on who is in the right.

The important part is the anonymity. You can't let any part of the moderation team interact with each other in a way that they would recognise each other with the exception of admins and the site owner. If you do, it could lead to bias. The most they should have is a Q&A board for moderation in which everyone is flagged either as janny, mod or admin.

To further ensure anonymity, randomise reports and appeals. Reports for the board are sent to all the board's jannies, whoever reviews it first makes the decision. Appeals are sent to a random active site moderator within 24 hours of the appeal to ensure they're not always in the same timezone as the janny and won't be biased.
