Elon Musk's team of mid-20s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) disruptors has once again found wasteful spending—this time focusing on a $59 million payment sent by the Federal Emergency Management Agency to luxury hotels across New York City housing illegal aliens.

"The DOGE team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants," Musk wrote on X early Monday morning.

Musk explained, "Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President's executive order," adding, "That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals!" Musk did not specify which luxury NYC hotels received FEMA funding for migrants last week but noted that a "clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds."

Trump needs to shut this Unconstitutional Anti-American and Treasonous agency down for good! Aid should be provided to the States and emergencies should be handled by locals from now on, as they used to be when America was America.

At this point, we're going to need some real evidence to trust DOGE claims. Their Wall of Receipts has been practically fraudulent, with fact-checking efforts pointing out spots where they've exaggerated or just straight up been wrong about reported savings, and they've generally responding to this by reducing the amount of information on the Wall to make fact-checking more difficult.

And my understanding is that NYC paying to use hotels to house the homeless is not new. It's been going on for years. Since 1981, homeless in New York state have a legal right to shelter, and the common interpretation of that precedent is that it applies regardless of citizenship status. The city legally has to find somewhere for people to stay. It's dumb, but it is what it is.

The amount, and that it's coming from FEMA, is very eye-catching though.

But even with that, FEMA sometimes direct money from other sources, so it's not really a smoking gun regarding FEMA funds. I'd be interested in seeing some proper reporting on the subject, for sure.
