Thought I'd keep it short and sweet rather than including all influences. These where picked because not only is their work highly influential to me, they have also in one way or another taught me something important about art.

How convenient; for the past few days I've been lacking a personal reason to get better. Now I know what I must do, and that I have to keep going.
Not many artist, but all are important.

The pic labeled Eero Järnefelt is actually a painting by Albert Edelfelt.

Gee, those two always get mixed up. Both were really good realist painters, though. Fixed, thank you.

Edelfelt reminds me of Émile Friant.

I take a lot from these manga artists not just in art/ stylistic sense, but technically speaking like how they apply ink work, and show the story.
There's a lot of little techniques to learn!

May I ask what made you to choose especially these artists? >>9295 's point about showing the story had me asking myself the same question.

>Akseli Gallen-Kallela
An example how to live the life of an artist: he walked among the common people, practiced throughout his career and finally travelled to all the way to Kenya to do hunting.
>Shinkawa Yoji
He tells enough for the viewer to understand what the subject is, but leaves enough out to tickle the imagination. I know that isn't easy - he clearly knows what he is doing!
>Albert Edelfelt
Expressions of the models, treatment of light and anatomy are superb (for my taste). But the thing that I envy is how much he tells without exaggeration. The real world is not boring.
>Otomo Katsuhiro
Otomo's art is precise and complex, but every work has a clear focus. There is a lot going on, but never too much or in a wrong place. A kind of reverse Shinkawa.
>Azuma Kiyohiko
The favorite storyteller. I don't understand where he gained his art skills between Azumanga Daioh and Yotsuba&. His characters feel alive, personal and have interaction between each other. Made me appreciate everyday things in art and life.

Friant's works looks cool. A bit softer look, perhaps?

Fukumoto Nobuyuki's linework is bold and simplistic, with high contrast. I really enjoy his stylized take on expressions, they're fun and full of emotion. The pacing in his stories is notoriously slow, but he knows how to amp the suspense with satisfactory pay off.
Hirano's art also uses a lot of high contrast and bold lines, which is all lovely. It's striking and catches my attention.
As for the other three, they kind of tickle a fancy I have for bodyhorror. Especially von minnen's take on still lifes and the weird, tough flesh, contrasted by strange, colorful gummy shapes. Theres something to like about things that are abstract but cohesive at the same time.

I chose the artists I did because of three things that appear consistently in their visual looks: cuteness, sexiness, and/or coolness. Cuteness because of how approachable the drawings can be when done correctly, an example being Guruhiru's art in the center of my board. Sexiness because the sleek and mysterious vibes emiting from the works of Alex Toth (middle left) and Kazuma Kaneko (bottom left.) And finally, Coolness, because intense and cool-looking imagery of Tite Kubo (Top Right) and Shigenori Soejima (middle bottom.) It might not be as complex as seeing the storytelling in a person's artwork or what have you, but there is appeal for those types of works.

It is such a shame Shigurui got cut short. You know he had planned a huge epic tournament with all those unique fighters gathered.

Why was that and did the story follow his initial plan up to around where the anime ends? There is a noticeable shift around there in the quality of the writing
>>9619
I like stories that push emotions to an extreme and I think the melodrama of japanese romance does that, the thing is that its also not very good. I'm motivated by my hubris telling me that I could do far better. The anime and manga Saikano is a major influence because of this, I see brilliance in it but the story is at the same time absolutely terrible in other aspects.
The only book that I would really recommend is Be With You by Takuji Ichikawa. Its a very sweet story, and importantly I think it gets one of the archetypes for male romance right in a way I haven't seen elsewhere.
The Animatrix is similarly a favourite partly because it pushes things to the extreme, I haven't found many stories that are nearly as thoroughly apocalyptic as the 2nd Renaissance.
