Hello drawfags. I just started seriously drawing about a week ago (I've taken art classes in high school years ago but they were mostly about drawing from reference and I haven't drawn since) and I've been making good progress with the fundamentals. Unfortunately, I ended up not drawing at all for two days and my muscle memory went to absolute shit and I pretty much spent all day rebuilding it again. It is because of this that I've decided that I will draw every day for now on for at least 4 hours a day MINIMUM.
With that being said though, what do you anons recommend that someone spend on drawing as per a daily basis? I know that the obvious answer is going to be "draw as much as possible/whenever you can" but i'm talking about if you just don't have the whole day to do it, or if you're sore from work/tired/sick etc. and you want to push yourself to at least draw enough to feel satisfied for the day.
tl;dr What is anon's BARE MINIMUM time spent drawing per day or even week?

It really is as simple as "draw as often as you can" and I think the strongest argument for that is the fact that there are tens if not hundreds of thousands of people employed in various commercial art fields who are drawing 8 hours a day 5 days a week as their minimum…and some of them remain mediocre regardless. We can never know in advance if we're fated to make it on our own terms or not in this lifetime-most students at exceptional art schools fail; most atelier students exit their programs without creating anything particularly inspired. If all we strive for is mediocrity or a bare minimum there is a high probability that mediocrity or worse is exactly what we're going to get.
Ultimately all we can know in advance is that we should never consider ourselves as having drawn nearly enough until the end.

There is no such thing. The more you draw, the faster you improve, the less you draw the slower you improve, that's all there is to it. Even if you have a goal and a time limit, different people learn at vastly different paces, and there's no finishing line when it comes to learning art.

Draw more than you think you should. Take for example the statement
<I draw for x hours a day
I'd split those hours into chunks with breaks in between them. I lessen the drawing time to isolate the moments I spend in ideation and reflection. Remember time spent thinking of what you want to draw isn't drawing.

10 hours per day, every day, 100 gestures, 100 hands, 100 faces, 100 feet, no AC in summer, no heat in winter.

How about first being able to draw one good figure, one good hand one good face and one good foot before you try to do 100 of each in a day?

That's it! I'll start drawing when I'm good at art, that way I won't feel bad about it. Thanks!

How about correcting your misstakes rather than giving up and doing 100 bad drawings?

I try to draw for 3-5 hours a day. Time isn't enough alone though. If you practice the wrong stuff for 5 hours you won't improve. The anon who mentioned artists who draw for 8 hours a day is failing to take into account that many are not drawing the things they'd need to draw to bring their skills farther. Anyone can reach true mastery with enough dedication and the right work.

To explain better: people in animation jobs or other positions where they're drawing stuff of a consistent style/theme aren't pushing the boundaries of their skills. They're doing something they're already accustomed to. You need to keep introducing new techniques into your work. You should seek out mentors and texts that can help you expand your toolkit. Come up with a study that you think is just out of your skill range and put your all into it. It's not about drawing a particular object or whatever. Does that help?

well to reach a level of high skill it will take you at least 10 years, assuming you're already into drawing what you like, by the time you're 12. THese early years are so important. I spent my early age drawing what I found cool, cars, dinos, monsters, houses, stick people wars, etc. The important part is to draw what you LOVE. If zone out and become immersed with the process of creation, you're going to be good some day.
By the time I was 19 I started studying real fundimentals. Figures, perspective, color, preportion. After learning these basic things I would slowly bend the rules and go back to drawing what I LOVE. The only difference now as opposed to before, is I gained knowledge of the very important fundementals and my work get better and better over the years.
Now to get more on what you asked. Between the age of 12 and 17, I did this for atleast 4to5 hours everyday. My routine was simple. Wake up, go to school. COme home and draw in my room alone. It's how I channeled my stress and anger. I would do this everyday for hours, sometimes neglecting outside friends.
Later when around the age of 19 is when things go serious. I went to college for a year and studied the arts. I spent easily 7 hours a day drawing, and not consecutively, lets be realistic. Broken up it would amount to rougly 7..also by this time I learned how to use photoshop. I'll be honest there were some days I spent 10 to 12 hours straight working paintings. DOn't do this.
Continue to draw what you LOVE. Listen to your teachers even if you disagree. Don't let people tell you what to draw. THats who you are. But take advice if it's logical and fundemental. Use thatadvice with what you love to draw.
Good Luck. And remeber.. a true artist is in this for life.

Feng is a total bullshit artist and while I respect the hustle as a business man, as artists we should be smarter than to take him too seriously.
