In the USA, you are correct. There's technically a slight upward trend in violent crimes in the very recent past (<5 years) but compared to 30-40 years ago, it's way lower. You almost never see accurate historical stats comparing violent crimes or police numbers for some reason. The media loves to promote doom and gloom for ratings. It also drives up gun sales which is just part of the plan for the future.
