 No.105465

Thousands of Hong Kong protesters have started occupying roads in Kennedy Town, and are marching towards Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island.

Earlier in the day, tens of thousands took to the streets of Tsueng Kwan O in an approved march. Hundreds then gathered outside the police station, throwing bricks and pelting the building with eggs, prompting a police warning before they dispersed themselves.

The chaos comes a day after clashes in the shopping hubs of Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui, as well as in the working-class residential district of Wong Tai Sin, where tear gas was used by police.

Protesters’ demands are largely the same as in previous recent rallies, including the full withdrawal of the bill and an inquiry into police actions over the handling of protests.

The march has started with thousands of people, some carrying umbrellas under cloudy skies that may open up. Yuk Nga Lane, a small road leading to the park, is completely jammed with people. The organiser says there will be a slight change of route because of crowd size. The procession will not go onto Pui Shing Road as earlier planned, taking an alternative path. A "Lennon Wall" will be set up at the end of the march.

All of this is reposted from halfchan. A great thread from a HK resident.

Pic 1: Meanwhile in Belcher Bay Park, where an approved rally is also set to take place, hundreds have gathered.

Pic 2: At lawmaker Elizabeth Quat's office in Hau Tak Estate, the windows are sealed with wooden boards.

Pic 3: Holas Cheung owns Salon Ziwei, a hair salon on Catchick Street near Belcher Bay Park, the site of an approved rally. He is putting up strike posters on his shop window and giving the thumbs-up to passers-by on their way to the rally. "My salon will be on strike tomorrow. I've seen how much the youngsters on protest front lines have done. Now it's my turn," he says. Cheung has not participated in a strike before but feels the urgency now. "If I don't do business for one or two days, it's no big deal. But if we let the government carry on this way, it's game over for the whole of Hong Kong." He hopes through the strike, Carrie Lam's government will respond to protesters' five demands, among which is the full withdrawal of the extradition bill and the dropping of charges against protesters.

Pic 4: Some protesters have spray-painted insults and thrown eggs at a wall of the Tseung Kwan O Police Station. Officers in riot gear were earlier seen coming out of the station but they went back in.

I think this is a really cool first-hand account of the protests. Very topical for /liberty/. Thought I'd save it and share it here. If you're interested in the original 4chan thread, it may still be up.

Outside the liaison office, an officer stands guard on a ladder. At least a dozen more officers are stationed on the other side of huge barricades.

Liam Lee, a 25-year-old student living in Elegant Garden, says it is unreasonable for police officers to fire tear gas in the residential area. “I live on the 20th floor and could still feel it. It didn’t even help that I closed all the windows facing the street,” he says.

Some protesters are heading back to Belcher Bay Park, while along Praya Kennedy Town, road blocks have been set up.

Some protesters have defaced the walls of pro-Beijing lawmaker Horace Cheung's office. They have also destroyed some window panes.

Some protesters are taking the subway from Sheung Wan to Causeway Bay. "Monday! Strike!" they chant, calling on other citizens to join a citywide strike on Monday. About 100 protesters are now outside SOGO department store, Causeway Bay. Some have started blocking the westbound lane of Hennessy Road, a crucial artery for traffic on the island.

Protesters have now blocked the eastbound lane of Hennessy Road outside SOGO.

Protesters have placed barriers across Hennessy Road. Buses are having to turn around.

Protesters making their way along Hennessy Road are trying to mitigate some of their impact on public transport. Here (pictured) they are allowing a tram to pass.

And here is a video of them helping a bus get past the junction at SOGO.

Meanwhile, on the westbound lane of Gloucester Road, protesters have set up roadblocks.

An exit in the direction of Central at the Cross-Harbour Tunnel is now blocked.

Some among protesters are calling for others to head to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel in another attempt to form a flash mob there. A stream of people heads in that direction. The tunnel was briefly blocked twice in a span of five hours on Saturday night.

Separately, a group is heading for their next target, the Golden Bauhinia Square in Wan Chai.

Over in Wong Tai Sin, outside the disciplined services quarters, about 100 local residents are hurling abuse at riot police, saying they are not welcome in the community. Police maintain standby positions, occasionally pointing strong lights at the crowds. A female resident who verbally supports the police is strongly scolded by the crowd.

Dozens have arrived at the MTR station in Lam Tin – one stop along from Kwun Tong – and have blocked an exit, using wooden boards to fend off any possible police clearance. No officers have been spotted yet. At a bypass to Kwun Tong outside Lam Tin MTR station, some are also blocking the road.

About 200 protesters are now heading down Lei Yue Mun Road in Lam Tin, seeming to be heading to where others are at Kwun Tong Police Station.

A group of protesters are at their final flash mob stop in Mei Foo. They build barricades on Lai Chi Kok Road and leave the scene within 10 minutes. “Let’s go home. See you tomorrow,” they chant. (There's a big protest planned for tomorrow.)

Bags of clothes have been placed outside the restroom in Mei Foo MTR station so protesters can get changed before heading home. This is to avoid detection by police or other opponents who have targeted people in black, the colour worn by demonstrators.

Police have fired tear gas at hundreds of protesters gathered near to a disciplined services quarters in the east Kowloon neighbourhood. Before the gas was fired, police tweeted: "A large group of protesters are currently surrounding the Wong Tai Sin Police Station and Wong Tai Sin Disciplined Services Quarters, hurling suspected corrosive fluid at police officers, posing a serious threat to the safety of everyone on site."

Some people were arrested and carried away by riot police outside Tin Shui Wai police station after they dispersed protesters and local residents at 1am on Sunday night.
