This is such a highly inaccurate and unfortunately prevalent understanding of the American revolution.

This seems to suggest that the causes beli was simply taxes. Maybe something along the lines of the British overlords hiked up taxes on tea and no one wanted to pay them. The reality is that by 1776 and the deceleration of independence, hostilities had been brewing between colonist and the British for about 10 years, and it wasnt even close to just being about taxes. In fact, The Boston Tea party happened because the British actually lowered taxes on tea, and this was to get rid of excess tea the British East India company had, which the colonist didnt like at all because they saw it as the British creating a monopoly which they had to kowtow to. The more egregious tax was the sugar act of 1764

Also, I think theres this idea that the Boston Tea Party was this rowdy mob of hooligans just breaking shit and going crazy but it wasnt like that at all. It was a very direct and precise attack on the tea and just that. They had denied the ship carrying the tea into the harbor until they were finally forced to by the parliament and after that, dock workers refused to unload all the tea. This led to a decree that the British regulars stationed there would unload it then.
Thats when a sort of leaderless protest took place, everyone disguised themselves, and they all borded the ships and dumped all the tea into the harbor. They didnt steal any of it, or break anything or damage any of the ships. They even had kits to repair or replace the locks they had broken on the ships in order to get access to the tea.

What books would you recommend that covers pre-war hostilities like this? I read the biography on Washington but that only covers the dismantling of the House of Burgesses and the denial of settlement in the Ohio Valley.
