Speaking of India, I remember a thread on an Indian weapons forum some years back where a police man posted the contents of their weapons storage at the station. It was an amazing assortment, all sort of Lee-Enfields, Webleys, a Webley-Fosbery, .476 Enfield revolvers, Sten guns, Bren guns, Thompsons, Greener riot guns. It was an amazing cache that will die on that continent thanks to their strict gun laws. They're still sitting on piles of Ishapore 2A1s that I wish they would send to the US. Another fun fact, the last run of .303 British chamberd Lee-Enfield No.1 MkIII's was made in the 1980's at Ishapore during a rise in tensions between Indian and China.

It's a manual machine, you're not cutting at sanic fast SFM, it's really not necessary for low intensity work. Plus, not everyone has the whole setup of pump, nozzle, basin, filter, et al. I would've at least used some cutting oil when chasing the threads, though.

You don't need a whole setup for some coolant, just an old gatorrade bottle and a bowl.
Do you mean manual as in hand-cranked, or manual as in non-comper-assisted? Cooling can certainly be useful for the latter too.

I mean 'manual' as in a non-numerically-controlled machine that may or may not have a power feed. Not unless we're talking about something like a 19th century treadle lathe.
And yeah, you can apply coolant with a spray bottle or similar, but in my experience that tends to turn it into a three handed operation.

Does anyone have information on the topic milled vs stamped vs welded?
Milling is the most expensive but accurate way, stamped seems to be a middle way and welding everything together is pretty much the most "ghetto" way.
Is there any gun where most parts are stamped?

Alle Sturmgewehre

Early AKs
The Volkspistole
SA80 used lots of stamped parts as far as I know
Also: you got your terminology all wrong.
Milling and Stamping are forming processes. You use them to form a part of a certain shape. Welding is a connection method. You use welding to connect two or more pieces.

Nope, Nope.
For AK receivers and G3/Mp5 receivers you can just stamp a metal plate to get a receiver and press them in form with a jig.
For an AK Receiver you can actually mill just 3 plates of metal together.
While making a M4/16/Ar 15 Receiver you have to mill that fucking thing it out of an piece of aluminum.
Or is there a stamped M16 Receiver I'm not aware of?

You completely misunderstood me.
Maybe you should read DIN 8580. Get learned, strelok.
Milling (dt.: Fräsen) is a separating shape-giving process (dt.: Trennender Formveränderungsvorgang). Stamping (dt.: Biegen) is a cold re-shaping process (Kaltumformverfahren).
Welding doesn't alter the shape of a part. Instead it connects multiple ends.
Welding (dt.: Schweißen) is a connection process which used Welding (dt.: Fügen durch Schweißlen).
Fuck Beuth.

As I understand it, you are basically inserting a steel rod into your barrel that seals the walls off, expect for the places you want the rifling to be. Then you pump salt water through those holes and hook it up with a weak electric current. This makes the metal rust away in the spots where it actually contacts the water, leaving you with a very shallow rifling.
Looks easy enough, and very easy to reproduce reliably. Making the insert would be the hardest part, and the fag in the link you posted (as well as his sources) use 3D printed inserts. You could just take a rod with a rectangular cross section and twist it to get the same effect.

Yeah, the airshit copies were similarly sized to actual Glock receivers for the time, so all you needed was a parts kit since the polymer doesn't take much of a hit when firing.
Of course, that, the Iron Glock kit/schematics, as well as Polymer 80 bumped up the price of the otherwise useless parts kits, so it's no longer practical.

They had to add some steel parts to keep the slides mated, but they worked.
From 10 to 150 rounds tested.
Some survived 20rounds before braking, some more. But what can be expected of a 15usd ABS airshit lower?
The more expensive glassfilled nylon stuff survived better (because airshitters want similar polymers to "real steel").

The only reason wooden cannons were ever a thing is because they didn't have access to foundries or good metal in sufficient quantity.

Do you think ATF would regard the VG1-5 as "easily convertible"? I feel like it would be a good action for a homebuild semi-auto. I plan on using an AR-15 trigger pack since that pleases the ATF and they're cheap and easy to find. I just feel like the unlocked nature of the action may make the Feds antsy. Did Ian's vaporware VG1-5 project need any mods to get BATFE approval, or had they gotten to the point of requesting approval yet?

I didn't say they were illegal, but BATFE is an inconsistent son of a bitch that is intentionally vague about "easily convertible". The only criteria I know of is no open bolts, but plenty of closed bolts have been given the no-go for whatever reason. Constant point of consternation for semi-auto builders working off of obscure parts kits. Then we can all remember the whole shoe string debacle. Or the time they seized a bunch of airsoft guns. I just know the a blowback firearm of any variety is tends to be more mechanically pliant in this regard than a locking action.

What I had in mind is most of your machinegun parts kits build where modifications are required to prevent the insertion of full-auto internals. This generally includes unmodified bolt assemblies. Even lacking such internals, and lacking the ability to fire automatically as such, they'll still land you in hot water. Your reduced ID tube guns and anything that requires a denial island fall under that. Oh fuck it. I'll build the damned thing and they can come get it if they want it that bad.

"Land you in hot water" is in reference to using a receiver that, even if constructed for semi-automatic fire, can still fit enough original internal parts to displease ATF. Whatever line that happens to be, but fitting the original bolt in a semi-automatic sten, Maxim, or M1919 is a known no-no regardless of the firing style of the end product.

Lost-wax casting is used for everything from engine blocks to pic related, including firearms. The best known example here is Ruger, but if you search a bit you'll find plenty of companies who do this. For some reason the average Fudd believes that anything not machined from a solid block of metal will fall apart, but that's false.

The polystyrene that you use in a 3D printer is solid just like as if you were printing with PLA or ABS/ASA.
One thing which isn't immediately obvious when it comes to lost plastic or lost foam methods is that you need to be sure that you have gotten rid of all the material before you pour the aluminium. The reason being is that aluminium likes to react with carbon rich materials to produce aluminium carbide which is brittle and will ruin your parts.

Given that 3D printed plastic ones hold up just fine a cast one would probably be fine as well, the only real load on the lower is where the buffer tube mounts so if you want to be safe maybe cast one of the designs the 3D printer guys came up with as they are reinforced in that area.

Black powder for a muzzle loader.
An amateur trying to make anything smokeless has a good chance of blowing himself up, given that the entire process of making smokeless powder essentially boils down to converting highly sensitive substances that detonate into a less sensitive substance that doesn't.
BP is about taking materials that are fairly inert on their own and turning them into something that isn't. It has risks of its own (it is gunpowder, after all), but it is not the same kind of risk.

It might be possible, but your depth of cut would need to be so shallow that it would take many hours to complete an operation. The feed motors would probably stall if you tried taking much more than .005 per pass.
You really can't get away from the need for proper machinery if your ambitions go beyond one or two small jobs. The ideal thing would be for a /k/ommune to acquire a nice machining center, but even something on the smaller side like a Haas mini mill is going set you back 40k. Jet has a few smaller machines that go for between 20 and 30, but generally the least expensive way to go is a used machine from craigslist (2000-3000) to rebuild and retrofit with ball screws, servos, and a controller. Regardless, when you factor in the cost of tooling, you'd be hard pressed to cheap out.

I don't understand the common infatuation with CNC, nor the assumption that it's a prerequisite for anything. The only time you absolutely need a CNC is when you want some arbitrary oddball contouring that you can't do by hand, or else if you're tooling up to produce a million or something. For anything else, and especially for small scale fab shop one offs, a manual Bridgeport is more than sufficient.

Its not a case of absolutely needing it in order to make something (although as 4th and 5th simultaneous axis machines become more common more designers will make crazier designs which will require it) but instead the increased productivity that comes from having even a low end CNC machine like a Tormach.
Sure, it might be simpler if you are just taking a planing cut across a piece of metal to have a manual mill but for even small jobs its becoming more advantageous to have a CNC machine. Modern tooling like high feed endmills also need feeds and speeds which are beyond what a human can do.
Hell, even race teams are investing in big CNC machines since billet engine blocks are becoming popular to the point where teams that aren't using them are at a disadvantage in racing leagues where they are legal.

The cylinder holes used in that example are actually extremely durable. Depending on your weld quality and the tolerances of the axles you used I estimate that you can have the same accuracy for at least a year of continued moderate use.
I am not saying anything about the initial accuracy though, because it depends entirely on the axles you use and the quality of your craftsmanship.

Hypothetically I could make a cool gun that uses a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen as a propellant to fire a projectile at high velocity, Of course I haven't done that and will not do that because that would be illegal in Canada. :^)
Because I can't post an image of something I didn't make I will post an illustration of the concept. You could probably make this with steel plumbing fairly easily and generate hydrogen and oxygen with electricity and water. A Schrader valve would work to fill up the chamber and a BBQ lighter can be salvaged for it's electric ignition system. Oxyacetylene would probably also work but be careful if you try any of this stuff.

The only cost effective way doing a 0% one is to hunt down scrap aluminum and cast a blank yourself. Cuts down the price to the point that can compete with just buying the almost complete lower.

Looking for the drop-in auto sear for the AR that was like, a block of aluminum that you didn't have to drill a 3rd pin hole for. It was like a concealed system.
Anybody know what I'm talking about? I might be imagining it.

A lightning link, though that isn't a block at all and iirc only work with some AR's.

Nah, it's not a lightning link or a quick-link. It's a 3 piece, a block of aluminum, a sear, and a pin connecting the two. Can't for the life of me find it in my files anymore. It's very square.

Various sources but a bulk of it is from Improvised Munitions, posted here.

Aside from Japan, Solingen Germany has one of the longest knife forging industries in the world. Any quality fork and knife for breakfast is going to come from Japan, or Solingen.
I don't know that particular company though

That's exactly what I was looking for, actually.
Any more information on those?

ive been interested in building my own very powerful air rifle at home for a long time but my rampant depression has prevented me from doing so much as properly repairing my furniture, let alone building a gun

>Of course I haven't done that and will not do that because that would be illegal in Canada. :^)
no it wouldn't be
>Oxyacetylene would probably also work but be careful if you try any of this stuff.
also no, it burns hot but doesnt expand enough. most people who get into hardcore hobbyist potato cannons still swear by flammable aerosols or butane. they offer good expansion, are cheap, and are safe to handle.
ps
>hydrogen
also offers fairly poor expansion and energy density compared to more conventional fuels. hydrogen is used in some combustion engine based generators because… uh… reasons, i guess. but there's a reason gasoline and diesel are more popular
>hydroxy
literally pseudoscience quack shit for retards. hydrogen with enough oxygen to burn is already "hydroxy" but without the pseudoscience quack shit. there are optimizations to be made in your fuel-air mix but "hydroxy" in its usual definitions is different from hydrogen and oxygen happening to be the same place and is, again, pseudoscience quack shit for retards.
if anything, a more viable thing to what you want for a gun to use in some kind of insurgency situation would be a hybrid diesel-air gun. some people already do it for funsies with normal air rifles, but basically you put some Vaseline Or Something in the skirt of a pellet and the rapidly increasing pressure causes the Vaseline Or Something to literally diesel and burst into flame, slightly increasing the muzzle energy by introducing conventional gas expansion by burning something quick-burning. it can also happen with freshly but very sloppily oiled air guns.
it's generally ill-advised because most off the rack airguns aren't built to take much higher pressure than they already use so you can fuck up your seals and such, most fuels that cooperate nicely enough to use aren't very good (e.g. vaseline will stick in pellets but will not actually burn that quickly or result in a ton of expanding gas, liquid oils won't stay in place nicely and could get into the bore and impact accuracy, etc), and in general it's trivial to get larger energy gains out of a combination of a larger pellet with a larger piston or stiffer spring or higher pressure tank and regulator or whatever than out of using such a hybrid system and trying to float just under the speed of sound rather than trying to shatter it (and usually failing) by converting your air rifle to a shitty version of a firearm. but it's a lot of fun because it produces a loud report and a teensy bit of smoke like you have a real gun :)
