jp turns 10 years old in a few months. it's hard to believe so much time has passed.

do you regret spending years of your life on it?

did you have fun?

mostly spent time 2008-2012 and then switched to spin-off. took long breaks after the spin-off went to shit and started falling apart. basically quit /jp/ related stuff in the last couple years. it was fun, but i didn't get much out of it while i spent too much time on it as well. the posters who made it special disappeared. probably killing themselves mostly and what's left is a husk. there's still posters left who i wish well, but /jp/ stuff got infested with loonies so what could've been a good community got shattered. that rene descartes quote about communities getting their laugh by pretending to be idiots seemed so cliche, but god was it spot on. painfully spot on.

/jp/ is my only sore spot. i had too much goodwill and overlooked too many glaring issues. when i finally noticed that the /jp/ spin-off were burned down rubble and and the cute image of awkward /jp/sie i was projecting was wrong it hit me hard. kinda felt like you're at a cute tea party, but then suddenly there's roach inside the tea and you pause blinking, but then suddenly everything turns into a horror show around you.

/jp/ itself improved, but i feel disconnected after realizing the cute tea party was actually a freak show. you never know when you're going to be replying to some frogposting subhuman from /b/

It's a symptom of the wider commercialization, compartmentalization, and sterilization of the internet as a whole. There's just no room for small, niche communities in web3.0. The net is being subsumed by IRL.

I don't know if I'm explaining this well but back in the day I used to be able to "immerse" myself in browsing some small, comfy board with its own unique culture and really feel like I was hanging out in a physical place and talking to people. Now I can't that suspension of disbelief back and I'm constantly reminded that it's all just words on a screen.

I think I understand what you mean. Back when I was a child the internet was a little paralel world where the possibilities are endless and where all kind of people could live peacefully together.

Now the internet has been infested by normal people, it's just another thing that caters to them at every turn. Really goes to show that anything that becomes popular will turn to shit eventually

Hey, I agree with your point (that /jp/ has been invaded by outsiders), but you're being unfair here. Chances are you have seen a lot of posts that made you think "damn, this is a good post", but they were actually made by frogposters. Sure, a lot of frogposters are normies, but don't forget that Pepe is 4chan culture and its existence preceeds the creation of /jp/. Don't judge /jp/sies just because they didn't get here through the same dank memes as you.

But it wasn't dank memes that brought me to /jp/. It was moving beyond chinese girl cartoons to fapping to dolls. The problem with new arrivals is that /jp/ isn't really a thing that ought to still exist, the people who are now what we were then are welcome company on /a/ these days, so we're basically just holdouts from a time since passed, which naturally can't be all that accommodating of new arrivals.

This is probably why the spinoffs that are shitposting general get wave after wave of new blood, as the boards that try to relive the past generally stagnate after the initial surge. The wandering /jp/sie diaspora keeps us alive as anons come and go from place to place, but those numbers shrink with every passing year, and in another decade or so all that will remain will be cargocultists and the archives they study as gospel.

What else would I have done? Not like my other interests were more productive.

Imageboards gave me a sense of community when irl was like a Kafka novel.

>>36783

I don't feel the latter, but yes. We are seeing monopolies kill sites. It's sad when you stumble on old comfy forum graveyards. You see communities, people who know eachother and the last post is from 200X, the donation bar unfilled and you wonder what killed it. Then you remember the big sites like Reddit and now 4chan. It's sad, especially when you arrive after it died and it seemed so comfy.

But it's consistent with everything else getting worse.

I honestly feel like that cargocultist from time to time.

My first interaction with /jp/, or 4ch for that matter, was around the latter half of 2012 due to my interest in anime and Japanese subculture as a whole. I kept the rule of "lurk before you post" to heart as my motto and just spent my days reading posts of others, bookmarking things I saw that interested me, such as shows, games and visual novels I hadn't heard of before and kept on going. Where most people were in their 20s and over, I was a brat finishing middle school just having his eyes sparkle over something others did instead of trying to do something similar for myself.

While everyone moved on, either to spin-off boards or entirely, I continued on with nothing but a slight sense that something doesn't feel the same. What made it worse was that I never dedicated myself to 'catching up' to what I considered my goal and group of people I adored. I simply switched between sparkling my eyes at people that were what I considered as 'far beyond me' due to that age gap that I could never catch up to and having fun with teenagers close to my age.

After I noticed that nothing seemed right anymore a few years later and the space I adored was no longer there, only then did I start searching for where those people went, while picking faults at both the differences in the places I found and at myself.Afterwards I instead distanced myself entirely and just collected otokei doujin music from kuukunen and all that while occasionally buying imports of favorite albums, studied for university, played video games to fill some free time and continued to talk with those similarly aged friends I've known since back then.

All in all, even if I had a time machine, I would not decide to go back to those days to 'redo' anything. Even if that mental wall was something I forced upon myself and all I required at that time was a bit of courage, even if that half-assed effort to infodump myself could be done properly to feel like I'm in the same standing. Through those wrong or right actions, I met a very small handful of friends I treasure beyond everything else and even a friend that's identical to me from likes, dislikes and habits to phobias and metabolism. And honestly in a state where I never felt like I fit into anywhere, having a person that seems like a mirrored image of yourself, just with different experiences was lifesaving for me. I only ever managed to meet them out of coincidences that happened due to that half-assed lifestyle, so I can never accept changing that, even if all the actions I took in regards to my aspirations were horribly wrong.

It's more of trying to take a load off my chest by writing this than anything. Even if things could've been worse, when I look back to things I admired while knowing that I could've been part of that with just a bit more effort instead of being a bystander, I can't stop getting sad at myself. I don't fully share the sentiment of all of you that have warm memories of those times as an active participant, so I can't say that I understand you as one of you, but instead I know that looking back at something bright while having no part in it isn't a pleasant feeling. In the end all I can do is continue to have my back against those times and try to contribute elsewhere to create even this tiny tiny shard of what /jp/ used to be in the space I have created over the years.
