Not sure of your process for editing but I use a method known as "bit perfect editing". I know Adobe Audition's wav editor can't be trusted but not sure about Audacity's.

The idea behind "bit perfect editing" is to edit an audio file and attempt to limit the damage editing does to quality. So to that end, I first convert the source file (usually an mp3 or m4a file) into a CD quality wav file (2CH 16 bit @ 44,100). Then at that point, freely edit the wav file with minimal loss in quality. Below is the ffmpeg command I use to extract a wav file. Decode the hash 1x, it's hashed so the cmd doesn't get altered by website formatting,

Once done editing I usually convert the wav file into a flac file and delete the wav. This way, it saves disk space and if I ever want to do further edits, simply extract the wav from flac which will net you the exact same wav file. I use flac.exe to encode to flac because ffmpeg inserts a few metadata bits into all files whereas flac.exe won't.
