Yeah this game is actually awesome. The cover doesn't do it justice. It has quick time events and typing minigames and political commentary that is actually funny because it doesn't try to take itself too seriously. Randumb and silly. Art is actually pretty alright too- there's an adult route if you're not into lolis but the art is also a lot worse in that.
It's also old as fuck and everyone here probably already knows about it so not sure why a topic about it is popping up here.
But if you actually didn't know about it- I suggest playing it instead of just finding it's gallery somewhere. Lots of funny context.

To me most of them look old somehow. Guess they are looking old (or ugly, as you would say), because the style is mostly 'flat' cartoonish, and there is hardly any shadows to accentuate form.
Still the chars are kept individuals, what I like. Sometimes you got chars combining body parts, may be alright for toon style, but can still become lame. Looking indifferent to me, with e.g. only heads changed.
The chars are not looking super cute or super sexy, which I am thankful for. Was mostly in for the story at the beginning, which still lacks btw, needs to proceed asap. I'd thought about how SS would look like - with Rubaka art, or SR7 art for that matter (not essentially DC comic style as you get with IU). Just to see if I could imagine playing that game with different assets. It's hard to do so.
What I could say is: some cartoonish / comic look 'n' feel is definitely necessary for SS, otherwise bgs and other assets need to be redone, too. So, no too naturally looking types. Furthermore I actually like me some hand-drawn content. Renders in other games of that kind are hardly done very specifically, qualitywise. Some adaption (e.g. clothes) is the utmost you sometimes get. Optimizing and individual features? - nope.
And seeing the very same assets (figurine 'X' from DAZ 3D and what not) over and over again in games / comics is also not a turn-on to me. I'd just say DC's style does give the game some individuality, this I prefer over 'beauty, bc I really do not need to fall in love with the art e.g. of a game instantly.
If you happen to know some old-fashioned manga / hentai art (more edged faces, thin bodies), those were assets with their own styles. I still could accept them, if just for the sake of gameplay, or watching / reading a good story. I got a link somewhere, a website hosting old h games, to try them.
