Branching off from the holographic displays, this thread focuses more on lasers in general since there are lots of things which lasers can be utilized for besides displays. This is also for posting pics that are in any way related to lasers or laser beams.

What does that include?

Do you have experience with hologram photography?

More high power VIS, 2-3 figure watt range, record breaking on occasion. Not 'get a whole lot of diodes and point them in the same direction crudely to burn stuff' but actual WBC and coherent beams at the highest levels. Professional stuff that makes sounds when you scan it on dark(ish) surfaces..

Not sat down to give holography a good go yet but have suitable sources for some decent sized stuff laying around, just need to suss the rest and the time to play. Do enjoy looking at it and learning about it though.

Not a complete laser oldfag though, started around the end days of gas.

Pic related is about the last 30% of the beam scatter from one laser… the building on the right of the main shadows is 80m away. This isn't your typical OPSL/DPSS/diode stuff. Try an order of magnitude and a bit and growing..

That's interesting

Is it just for experimenting and record breaking or are there practical applications being considered?

Yes practical applications. Benchmarking/record stuff is mostly for the scientific community/science fags (nothing like PC benchmarking stuff). Lasers like above can have industrial, entertainment, maybe medical at lower power and other applications which I can't really get into..

Some common industrial applications may include PCB trimming, solar cell scribing, ablation, engraving, plastic cutting. Others in other wavelength ranges can do other things. One project is a high power laser for a vacuum chamber, for a new approach to physics and material generation.. one of the more interesting ones. When I have more public information I will share it here as I think the board will enjoy it.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply This is a pretty slow board

I've used a laser cutter/engraver before

Usually they aren't used for metals but they're great for plastic and plexiglass. I've read about a lot of exotic uses for lasers

Not sure if everyone knows about this yet;

That time travel guy has been around for a while. That would be quite cool to look further into, I've seen some approaches that use rotation of polarization of light and that's very interesting.

Lasers are even used to cut diamonds. Different strokes for different folks!

Laser cutting though - damn the vapours are nasty stuff… keep safe anon!

Yes I remembered seeing him on tv before, but recently he's resurfaced in the media

Supposedly this type of time machine is from future to past only?

It involves lasers aligned in a special way to create a kind of tunneling effect
