so the "ultimate self" in homestuck is basically the unification of all versions of yourself, from all timelines and realities
it's essentially actually becoming a God. god tier is just powering up, but becoming your ultimate self is actual apotheosis.
dirk achieves his ultimate self before anyone else. furthermore, once he does, due to his aspect being heart (self/identity), he is basically able to coordinate with every version of himself in paradox space. so every single version of dirk is existence, except the canon dirk, kills himself. this basically "frees up" the resources of his ultimate self and allows the singular existing dirk to harness all the power. and a prince of heart, aka a destroyer of self, in its ultimate form is basically able to reshape characters and narrative to his will.
as to why he does it, he seems to think it's inevitable for a few reasons. he (wrongly) believes his powers are naturally bent to force himself on everything. he thinks it is in his core nature to be narcissistic and as controlling as possible. he thinks he is in fact capable of determining what is best for everyone, and ultimately (this is his master plan) by creating a universe where he is quite literally the judeo-christian God, controlling every single aspect of everything, he believes he will be able to create the best possible universe because he's just that far up his own gay asshole
he's basically just leaning into what he thinks he's destined to be.
but he also admits he knows on some level this is all horribly fucked up and he's wrong. and if he were a real hero, he'd just fucking kill himself.
