i think you can grind into just about any deck without spending a dime, although obviously then you're spending time instead of money
so maybe start out with aggro/tempo/pre-con, grind until you've at least got enough wild cards for most of the deck you really want, and then build that and grind with it until you get it finished off
really it depends on how many rares/mythics are in the deck you have in mind though. i think golgari is a popular option because it's both tier 1 and a lot of its stuff is uncommon

for rats what you want to do is pretty much just keep playing a rat until you get one of your win cons, then play that
if they're playing a lot of creatures as well and are swinging into you, generally don't block, as keeping up rat density is your #2 goal
if you get to 4 lands and still have a full hand you can start being a little aggressive though
