Has anyone here successfully repaired their will and attention span?

I'm talking from not even being able to focus on one thing for 3 minutes at a time to someone who can focus for 25+ minutes.

Hikki's occasionally talk about their wrecked attention spans, but has anyone ever fixed their attention span and how did you accomplish that?

>not even being able to focus on one thing for 3 minutes at a time

I don't think my attention span has ever been quite that bad, though it has somewhat deteriorated over the years. However, I have read that forcing yourself to focus on one thing for as long as possible helps. I would suggest starting with something that you enjoy, such as a video game you like. Just stick with it as long as you can, if you feel the urge to get up or look away, remind yourself to stay focused. Try to keep with it for 30+ minutes before taking a break or stopping.

Same here if i'm really interested in something all my focus is usually on that one thing but sometimes i get bored and wanna focus on other things or simply just don't care.

My own attention span used to be really bad as well, but it improved a little over the years. I'm not entirely sure how it got better, but I noticed it started to improve when I noted to myself that my attention span is shit and is something that should be improved. Since then it slowly started getting better by itself.

As another anon mentioned;

>However, I have read that forcing yourself to focus on one thing for as long as possible helps.

It's possible I started doing this subconsciously and then later knowingly. For example there was a time where vidya was something I could only play for a short time. Sometimes ranging from playing for minutes, or losing interest as soon as it's started up, but this started to get longer more consistently over time.

Once that was more or less in check, I had a problem with never completing most vidya because I'd get bored of it or distracted with something else and then completely forget about it even though I told myself "I will come back to it eventually". However, recently I started to force myself to finish the game before moving on with something else, which has made vidya overall more enjoyable and left me with feelings of accomplishment as little as they may be, and of course this also seems to get easier the more it's done. The key to all of this seems to be having the willpower to force yourself to stick with something even though you are losing focus/interest.

Oddly enough writing still is a problem and this post took me much longer to write than it should have due to getting distracted multiple times. Apologies if it's not sufficiently coherent.

It feels weird and uncomfortable to talk about myself on an imageboard

I have one thing (that isn't anime, manga, LN, or games) that I can actually focus on, and that's programming.

Try finding something that really clicks with you that actually requires thought. Actually doing a thinking task for a longer amount of time should help.

I could use serious research/exercises for this, one of the reasons I dropped into hikkidom was completely failing at college. After half a year of doing absolutely nothing, this procrastination/focus problem skyrocketed by every day I spent doing more of nothing, therefore ruining any motivation I could have to get a degree (college or anything else) because I cant even start

>just start studying

By my own, I dont even know what to do. Joining a class, after around 2 months I have absolutely no idea what is happening in class

i do stuff like:

-only keep one anime on the hard drive at a time

-don't keep any bookmarks (so i can't mindlessly 'zap' through them)

-don't keep any clutter around that can distract me

it helps a little bit but it's never gonna get fixed. i'm never gonna be able to focus on anything that's not braindead entertainment

Not just my attention span, but the power of my concentration used to be absolutely dismal. I couldn't concentrate for more than 20 seconds at a time, if that.

It's a lot better now. The major thing was the anxiety and competitive video games. I think internet browsing also does a lot of damage to concentration.

There's a book about what the internet does to concentration called The Shallows by Nicholas Carr that explains how this happens.

This is true especially when you have more then one tab open and try to focus on more then one thing at a time i'm sure a lot of the other users on here can relate since a good majority of hikkis spend almost all their time online myself being one of them.

Do you have a pdf file of that?? i'm interested in reading it.

It's funny you should mention that because just this morning I was thinking about it, and realized that I spend my entire day on my laptop from the time I wake up, to the time I go to bed.

i've been a hikki for 14 years total and i can spend 14 hours 7 days per week for months straight studying if i want to and have. i have to take naps every 3-6 hours when i study hard like that though cause it's mentally exhausting.

i'd suggest fixing your diet, staying hydrated, stretching, and simply spending time thinking. i've never had attention span issues, but i have had memory issues when i starved myself from excessive gaming stuff. when i played wow raiding my memory became so terrible i had trouble remembering to refresh 15 minute buffs. it fixed itself after i quit gaming and started taking better care of myself. now i don't play video games and spend my time reading and thinking.

this is kinda shooting in the dark, but i notice a lot of adhd short attention span types don't like thinking. they like to stare at stuff that gives their brain stimulus and drown out quiet or what's on their mind. they need to constantly switch to newer and shiner things because the stimulus response lowers over time. there's an element of mental illness in it for a lot of them though. try and enjoy quiet and your own thoughts. just don't look for outside stimulus and just sit around thinking while you stare a wall. motivation and procrastinating are a different deal, but simply doing something for a long period of time is relatively easy

I would recommend journaling every day, find something nice to write with and on. Just like meditation it will help you to reconnect with yourself. People who are isolated for a long period of time will begin talking to themselves, sometimes these are heated, emotional conversations. The same thing will happen when you write it down, but then you have a record of your internal dialog to look back on. This will really help you if you commit to doing it everyday, and try to do it in the same place. That spot will absorb your energy over time and really begin to feel like home, comfortable, a place where you can really be yourself. Please let me know what happens and we can talk more about what you discover.

Take care and happy holidays :)

I still play video games daily, sometimes for only a few hours, sometimes the majority of the day. I have never had severe issues with my attention span, and what little trouble I have with my memory is more due to the fact that I have very little in my life worth remembering, so it's more of a conscious refusal to remember things that I view as unnecessary information. Of course, I have never really been the type of person to completely shut off my brain while engaging in recreational activities. I'm almost always thinking or daydreaming about something, sometimes to the point where I lose focus on what I'm doing and get lost in thought for a minute or two. I guess it just depends on who the person is and what they're doing?

Taking some turmeric in tea every morning gives me will and concentration. Without it I feel too tired to even breathe. It's been proven to be more effective than antidepressants but no one wants to prescribe a $3 bag of spice in place of $75 drugs.

This is how i feel when i wake up in the evening i always feel very tired with very little energy so i always have to have a soda from my mini fridge to get energy in me to get me going throughout the night before i check my computer you could say this is just soda addiction i guess but it keeps me awake and energized.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I've been doing various things and my attention span is a lot better than it was before. The thing that helped me was just shutting myself in my closet with my DS and playing super mario bros ds for hours on end without stopping to do anything else.

I also ordered some supplements online. Turmeric, l-tyrosine and gotu kola. They seem to work if you're already engrossed in something. For instance, if you've been playing a video game for 30 minutes and then you take l-tyrosine, it keeps you focused on that game more intently and for a longer period of time.

The only issue is, I lack the will to actually start doing some actual studying/work. So if anyone has any helpful tips on repairing will or the ability to exert energy into something that doesn't bring immediate satisfaction, then I'd love to hear it.

And that is the main problem I think. Just my constant need for immediate satisfaction.

Just like what >>2426 said. The constant desire for the new thing.

Well it's going to take a lot more than fucking turmeric, good news it's just about as easy:

1) blow your pituitary up with cow pregnancy hormones from china

2) buy semax and/or shitcoin your way to some modafinil

3) engage in a hobby that taxes your attention, memory and logical creativity (at least as much as math or programming) and do some chores

4) use newfound retard energy from proper D2 and testosterone levels to be more-normie-than-normie

Give up scrollable websites like reddit, youtube, even 8ch. They give your brain frequent doses of dopamine hits and eventually any task needing longer time to get rewards will bore you.

Thats a sure fire way to improve attention span
