Most people here are just trying to lose weight I think. That means burning fat.

Calories in and calories out is proven proven science, tried and true. Fasting, no matter how difficult, is exactly what most of us here should be doing every so often. Yes, it can turn into dare I say it -anorexia- but if used as a tool, it can help you.

Let's not forget that the occasional fast is also good for giving your liver and other organs some rest/recuperation time since your liver/kidneys/etc. don't have to process excess toxins/get a chance to process any built-up toxins if you do a 12-16 hour fast once a week. Also The only two organs that absolutely HATE fasting are the brain and heart (the heart still benefits indirectly, but your brain is addicted to eating and admittedly wants to be constantly fed nutrients and fucks with your heart if you fast for more than 24 hours). The important thing to remember during a fast is to keep yourself hydrated with mineral water or "light" (Green/White/Herbal) tea (NOT ultra soft water or god forbid distilled or deionized water) since your body still needs water to perform many of its chemical reactions efficiently. Personally I would advise consuming a moderately sized meal when you first wake up to give your body something to jumpstart it, and then not eating until the next day (or eating a very small, mostly cruciferous vegetable-based meal like a salad with only light amounts of vinaigrette/oil for seasoning or a small bowl of plain rice that evening) if you are doing a fast to see the best results. Fasting once a week in many ways can be just as efficient as dieting and will in fact help shrink your stomach over time (so long as you don't eat a ton the next day) making it easier to lose weight.

Obviously you shouldn't do a fast that lasts more than 12 hours if you're trying to bulk.

Does sleeping for 12 hours count as a fast?

Yes. Any time sleeping counts. You're still metabolizing calories.

You metabolize 60% slower while asleep, but your body uses that time to make repairs. Keep this in mind.

Ah, another thing to keep in mind is that if you go without eating for roughly 18 hours, your body resets its circadian rhythm based on your next meal. If you decide to start a fast, make sure to break it during your regular wake-up time.

If anything, I get sleepier when I eat. I think this is just how my own body works though.

I went 45 hours without food and water a couple weeks ago. It was fine. I wasn't getting cold like I usually do, cold air wasn't a problem. Did a 1 arm push up each side and 1 leg squats at 40 hours, didn't lose strength. Felt naseous tho. Probably the growth hormone and chemical processes in general that I'm not used to without water. Wasn't too much of a problem really, just laid down for a while.

Dry fast will result in more efficient physiological and mental processes; body and brain begins to rely on messy haphazard shit when you eat and drink shit every day. I felt genuinely younger afterward and less cluttered, less weighed down by things. The effect was somewhat subtle, somewhat obvious (after breaking dry fast). I will do it again actually.
