I am afraid of going back to the gym, I did starting strength for a months and my outer hips hurt. I couldn't walk or sit for 3 months (well I limped) the physical therapist told me I should swim more. I had two cortisone shots. one on my knee and one picture related. I am not sure what caused it I woke up on a Monday morning in pain. I don't have any pain but cortisone shots are expensive as shit and don't want to go though that ordeal anymore.

Sounds like your fascia lata. You should do isometrics and active stretching (resist the stretch). It's a response from your fascia lata to harden up your lower body into an absolute unit, making everything well kept together, solid. shrink-wrapped. Continue on and make sure your fascia lata can keep up in making you a Solid Unit.
