Can someone please explain to me how to brace your core for a deadlift. Am I supposed to tighten my abs and almost try to pull my torso down, or am I supposed to push out have more of an arch in lower back.

Lie flat on the ground. Straighten your legs. While keeping them straight, lift your feet and knees off the ground. You'll feel the muscles in the small of your back tighten, and your lumbar spine will be in extension.
When deadlifting, replicate that feeling in your back. To brace from the opposite side of the spine, tighten your stomach as if you just told your friend to punch you in it. You're now bracing from both sides.

Take a deep breath into your stomach and then push a few fingers into your stomach very hard. Push your fingers out with as much force from your abs as possible. That is what you should be doing when you're deadlift.
