I've been thinking about the purpose of this board. What is your opinion:
Do you think this should be a place to talk only about "high cinema", with words like "movie" or "director" forbidden (there are only "films" and "auteurs") with no "capeshits" and blockbusters and allowed,
Or, a place for discussion about every single film with no prejudices, as long it is a film and there is a discussion, not spamming pictures of Aiden Gillan. (there's
>>>/tv/ for that)
Discuss, state your mind.

Not just "4U XDDDDD LELELELELELE EPIC MAYMAY'Z!" but taking the posts cereal, this will stop people who just want to have a bunch of fuck nuts go "yuh its gub" and will encourage the talk of fine films, and docs.
Since people will view this place as a well "that place that talks about books but with films and don't like lepicmaymay'z that much", this will end to people who want to talk about films talking about them.
Sorry if I write like a retard have not had any sleep for some time now.

I think that the thread will naturally attract "high cinema" because those are the films that allow more discussion to be produced because there is more depth to them.

It's a relief seeing that most of the people think alike. I was worried that some of the folks will try to shift the focus off the more mainstream films, considering them "pleb" or something like that. All films are worth of the discussion.

>>151>>152So far, there's not much traffic on this board and I think we should worry about it when it becomes a problem. As of now I think we should consider allowing tv series threads, because of similarities in this media (some TV series can be as entertaining and well written as best films), and the alternative is
>>>/tv/ that consists, as of now, of retarded memes - not only baneposting, but the rest that made /tv/ a shit place.
If
>>>/film/ was a place for discussion about everything film/documentary/tvseries related, and
>>>/tv/ for random posts, that would be the best solution, I guess. For now the board is too small to diversify mutual community.

I agree wholeheartedly with all posters so far. To my eyes, the distinction between high cinema or art cinéma is somewhat artificial. As much as I hate capeshit, I think any film in existence should be open for discussion. But, most importantly, we must cover the subject of how we'd like these lines of discussions to be. I say we shouldn't be too cheeky on encouraging deep and insightful film debate, deprecating the rest.

Also, I think it'd be cool (if browsers are eager to) to program film-related activities, the most essential of which would be watch-alongs, placing a thread after the viewing for further discussion. I actually did this in other internet forums; it turned out to be great.

Watching films together on an image board isn't the easiest. Time zones and scheduling will pretty much fuck it up for everyone. Either people will have to make the sacrifice of being awake or else people won't participate. Also what do we do about availability. Some poor sods will cry out that they're not on private trackers or something. Really all depends on what we decide to watch, but maybe pastebin tracker links?

Here are my thoughts.
While I liked the old /tv/ model of no sticky, this board is a bit different so it would be nice to give people some introductory guidelines. I'd still like to keep the initial page-stretching to a minimum, so I was thinking we could make a brief "/film/ guide to film" pastebin/webpage and simply link to it in a single line of text. That way there's less scrolling for regular visitors.
I'd hoped to keep tv discussion elsewhere, but we'll see if another board fills that void as 8chan develops. Unfortunately /tv/ seemed to turn into a shithole immediately.
MOTW would be great if we figure out the logistics.

No.339
>>335>>330Just setup a strawpoll every week, have whoever ends up organising it selecting a few films (perhaps do a genre each week?) and then we vote on which one to watch.

No.342
>>338So we need to set up some vague guidelines and things for the /film/ guide.
So I'd say to set up the ideas of focus on discussion of film, mostly the more artistic stuff, but just having it as an open forum about film. And then have some links to things like TSPDT for those new to the board trying to get in to cinema, and maybe some list of directors and worthwhile genres.

No.349
>>342Guidelines should be "Discuss films, explain your opinions, be nice to others", pure substance.
As for introduction to other users, there's infographics thread, but we may do certain lists (by genre? by country? by year) of entry level films. I remember /lit/ had once a wikia set up for that purpose, it was nice and clean. What do you think?

No.351
>>349Those are some good guidelines, I think explaining opinion and generally being polite are quite important with something like this if we don't want it to devolve into flame wars.
That sounds like a good idea too, link to TSPDT and then a list of films by country and one by genre, I think by year might be a bit unnecessary, list of important directors (relatively short one) could be good too.

I'd suggest the same thing as I did to /mu/, no prejudice. No resorting to pleb/patrician name calling and classification of films.
I'm happy to discuss blockbuster films if it is an open and honest discussion and people have an open mind and can accept that whilst a blockbuster movie (like Terminator or whatever) might be a really entertaining film, there are other films that do other things better.
That means that you can't stop people from talking about capeshit, as long as it is an actual discussion or even something as basic as talking about your favourite moments from it, quoting lines etc. But no meme posting.

No trade of ol' German honour, but unrecognizable masses brainwashed by media and State corps to believe in progress and globalization.

It's a distraction and an excuse to insult. I really don't understand why you would so vehemently defend this. What's the point? It's not about rules. It's about absolute anonymity. I don't want anything distracting from what is being written because the content of what you say should be all that matters and not where you are from.

Think long term.
Of course right now we are for "high cinema", but who knows what this board will be abused for in 2, 12 months?
Capeshit should be forbidden, because judging by the old /tv/, it tends to swamp out everything else for about a month around a major release (so, almost the entire year). That is the very least we can do. The board would instantly improve. Just like Disney movies go on /co/, so should capeshit.

They prevent blatant samefagging.
They help you identify shitposters over multiple threads unlike the ID.
They improve the overall quality of your posts because obviously you don't want your country to be recognized for just posting garbage.
They provide another dimension to the opinions about movies, you can see how for example a Spanish film is being viewed by people from Spain and how by foreigners.
Your main arguments for removing it seems to be that people will shitpost because of flags, but guess what, if somebody wants to do it, he will regardless of whether they are there or not.

Personally I don't care about germanys reputation. I think there are plenty of anons who think similarly especially if they are the kind of indifferent moron that would shit up a board just for fun.
>They provide another dimension to the opinions about movies, you can see how for example a Spanish film is being viewed by people from Spain and how by foreigners. This could be interesting, however one could simply state ones country of origin in a post to provide that dimension to the discussion but I do see your point here now.
>Your main arguments for removing it seems to be that people will shitpost because of flags, but guess what, if somebody wants to do it, he will regardless of whether they are there or not.I am aware fools will be fools regardless but my worry is that flags will be an easy target for them. This open arms mindset is naive and asking for trouble. Imageboards are fragile communities, every imageboard that falls from an early point of high quality discussion does so because they lower their basic social guards against "cancer" - in quotes because its definition is particular to each board and in a lot of ways the topic of this thread. You can't just accept anything goes and cross your fingers that stupidity won't proliferate, you have to real standards with a community actively self-moderates to enforce them.
Yeah, pretentiousness can be annoying, especially obscurity for obscurity's sake, but on the other hand you have total amateurish non-enthuisasm which the rest of the internet accommodates so heavily and has already long existed in the english imageboard framework as /tv/. There's also a pull towards the cinephile's otaku-style databasing but it's not something that lends itself to imageboards
What's the value in a board that is 90% threads we've seen before on movies we're all familiar with? If someone makes a thread on The Dark Knight, I'm going to tell them to fuck off/lurk and all of you should, too. When the newfag OPs start to cross their arms and sit on the floor saying "I have just as much right to be here as you do!", hoping to enable any lurking cancer to engage in shitposting with, the board is lost.

Hello, /film/.
>>>/atv/ board owner here.
Our board was created to fill the void of a place to discuss TV shows in a more slow appreciative manner, as threads about less popular shows simply die out on the current /tv/ climate, in the vein of /film/'s board culture. As well as popcorny movies, animations and all that secondary media that doesn't suit this board.
Feel welcome to post there, and we will be linking to /film/ (and /tv/) in our announcement links, unless the board owner here tell us not to.

I've been getting a fever about learning photography, it crossed my mind that back in Halfchan we had a board about that same topic. Doing an odd search on our front page here landed a result that at some point we also had a photography place with the same legacy name, /p/.
Standing at 1713 posts we can say the place was never a hotspot even in their early 2nd exodus days of October 2014, but they still go at it with the latest posts being as recent as 10 days ago ...so yes, still some activity around.
The point i wanted to reach was how about a photography general thread with those folks being formally invited? I know it's silly to ask for consensus but it's even sillier to start a thread with a complete amateur as myself. Sure even the old child modelling board with thousands of deleted posts got more activity but this would probably add some talent into the thread and reinvigorate that board's seemingly inert userbase, all 3 of them, plus i think maybe some anons might be interested here.
Just saying

I've thought about making a photography thread before. I can't offer practical expertise though. So I intended to post about directors who were photographers, films about photography, and also a general imagedump of cool photos.

>words like "movie" or "director" forbidden (there are only "films" and "auteurs"
you obviously have no idea what an auteur is. it's as clear as day that you're all just pretentious tryhards. i've seen so many posts where people hate on movies or directors just because of their popularity, while everything obscure is GOAT based on nothing but its obscurity. go read some books so you at least have the knowledge to match up to the level of your pretentiousness.

>all these general threads
This board looks like a comment section on imdb to recommend more related movies.
If were not for the chilling humor or out of topic subjects, /tv/ would have a better userbase for discussions of cinema. Sadly they have no taste.
But I've seen more good films being discussed there than on here.

The term "general thread" makes me think of fast-moving chit-chat about news happenings or whatever, not so much a slow thread dedicated to a specific topic.
General topic threads are pushed aside whenever /film/ gets linked somewhere and a bunch of people come. New users make low-effort threads that don't get much traction and are soon forgotten. So I'm not sure if that is an improvement?
An unfortunate drawback of these old threads is they make the board feel stale. I suppose the page count could be reduced to force more freshness. But that leads to a new problem of potentially losing "valuable" threads like references and requests.

Not sure if this question can be posted here...
I see that this board is about arthouse films. Is there a place to discuss about "mediocre", not popular genre films? They can be bad and silly, but I have such a soft spot for them. I've had a hard time finding a place to discuss about them (sanely) on the internet :/
