How about an extreme take on 'there are only two genders'? Men and women get on as usual, but anything in between or any combination thereof are considered subhuman, only receiving the legal protections domesticated animals do. They can't own or inherit property, can be put to work by their owners but can't actually hold jobs, are freely traded and sold on the open market, and all it takes to claim one without a home is to catch and subdue it.
