Why do people always assume that those who roleplay as a female are female in real life? An important rule of the internet is to assume everyone is male unless you have strong evidence to believe otherwise.
Is it better to just lie about my real life gender when the subject comes up? A lot of people have lost interest in me because of it. I don't really feel comfortable perpetuating a lie though, because they will always believe on some level that they have a chance to make me their girlfriend. Then again, the goal of roleplay is to immerse people into the story, so a lie really unreasonable under these circumstances.

Honestly? Just lie. Keep a cold head about it; as you said, it's either saying that or losing a partner 9 times out of 11, so just look out for yourself. Be aware that there is likely to be a lot of emotional baggage attached to this choice (manifested from the other end, of course), but I wouldn't feel too bad for lying to someone who is trying to find a girlfriend online instead of trying to find an RP partner; in a way, they're lying to you as well.

I've recently had a guy who I've met on Tera, who, after like 20 minutes of talking started telling me he felt I was "the one", and that he wanted to pursue a relationship (he was a 26yo virgin, by the way). He ended up buying me a ton of outfits, which I hate when they do, and then proceeded to cry when I said I really didn't have any interest on pursuing a relationship, and got really angry when I said I didn't want to get on voice chat. The things that guy told me… holy shit…
I guess this is kind of a dirty little secret, but I've come to love the OOC interactions with people, and often push things OOC, if they seem receptible to it. I used to hate when people asked about OOC stuff like my gender or location or things like that, but now, I think I love it more than RP itself. In fact, I don't remember the last time I told anyone I was a guy online. Usually I don't bring it up, but if I do, I always say I'm a girl.
I enjoy stringing people along, especially the "desperate beta losers who play video games all day" kind of guys, and seeing what my emotional nudges here and there do to them, and how it changes them: I like to make them feel cheery, fuzzy, wanted and loved, maybe a bit jealous sometimes and just play around with them in general; I also enjoy helping them with things like their self esteem, or getting a better and healthier lifestyle and so on; I never really offer myself for a serious relationship or anything like that. I get a big rush from feeling like I made them feel good and helped them out. When I get bored of it, or when I think things are getting a bit out of hand, I just try to phase out as smoothly as I can, because I honestly don't intend to hurt anyone. But yes, sometimes people do get hurt, and yes, I realize that, overall, I might be hurting more than I help, but I still enjoy doing it, so fuck it!

There is only one exception to this I feel, and that's if they tell you first. I've had a lot of heartfelt conversations with long time partners. We'd both play females, and one would admit to it. There's a ton more irl pinks out there than you think there are. Sure, not nearly as many as guys, but most actual girls won't bring up gender ooc unless we trust you enough to actually be friends with you. There's almost no good that ever comes out of letting someone know you're female ooc. It's almost always straight guys trying to get you to take romantic interest in them. It works the other way around, too. I either avoid the topic or just lie and say I'm a guy to pretty much anyone that ever asks, with the exception of a small handful of people that I've known forever.
I learned this the hard way, though. I started ERPing underage and it was a kind of sexual awakening for me, especially because I have cerebral palsy and the only kind of attention I got at the time was out of pity. Specifically, I started playing with this one partner who I just became infatuated with who was literally twice my age (I was like, 15, he was almost 30 at the time) and I shared way too much information with him. Eventually we had each other's phone numbers and we called sometimes and he got me to cam with him and stuff, most of which turned out to be fetishized around my chair and shit, but I was too dumb to realize how manipulative he was being until he started doing shit like mailing me sex toys and telling me how he was gonna fly to come see me just to choke me out and fuck me when my parents weren't home. I got scared, deleted my characters, and changed roleplay sites twice, and each time, he found me and would send me message after message after message until I finally trained myself to make profiles and ads that he would have no way to tell or find out that it was me. He followed me for SEVEN years and it's been a year since he last found me. He repeatedly ban evaded on F-list, and the other day I was just going through my notes because there's literally hundreds of his I never read because he'd send like a dozen a day trying to sweet talk me into giving him attention, how he'd take care of me, how he would masturbate thinking of me, etc.
Now only one of my several partners knows I'm female ooc since and even then only because I knew she was too well beforehand. Let this just be a caution to anyone thinking about being stupid enough to make the same mistakes I did. It's not worth it.

I remember I was on the other end of this and I'm pretty sure I was just bamboozled, but it was the weirdest bamboozling. I did a play with some artist on F-List and they were super nice. One of my favorite things to do is character/world build, so we'd talk shop about designs and junk. This continued on for a few months to the point where we were friends. One day they offhandedly, multiple times, mentioned how much they like some BL2 DLC but couldn't afford it. Luckily, the Steam Summer Sale was around the corner so I bought them a few for a grand total of $1.50. A dollar and a half. They then completely melted down, called me a stalker, and cut all contact with me. Naturally they kept the DLC.
Like if I randomly shipped them something that was +$200 to their house, I can see how that's really red flaggy. But I was working and still going to highschool, so I was certainly able to fork over a buck.
My confusion is because:
1) They genuinely thought I was a stalker? Im a pretty open book as long as we stay away from names and location. Naturally I don't request that stuff. So is buying a gift for a friendo of a few months stalkery? Actual question if I'm retarded.
2) I was conned? Though conning me out of a dollar and then bailing seems really fucking weird. Especially since I didn't think anything was up before they blew a fuse, so they potentially coulda kept scamming me with the fake friend angle.

Nah, I saw their art and it was pretty legit. But yeah, the fact that they mentioned it like three times over the course of a week, I actually just started assuming they wanted me to get it for them, but didn't have the balls to ask. First of all, people do ask what you have between your legs quite often on f-list, and I doubt anyone ever got banned for it - if it never happened to you, I'm happy; secondly, there are roleplaying venues other than f-list, believe it or not, so even if that was the case with f-list, it wouldn't fix the "issue" on those other platforms.

I feel like it can't be this fucking hard. I have weird hangups about OOC. I don't discuss gender, ages, names. relationship status, bodily descriptions or pictures, or personal histories. But things like venting about work, or hobbies, or locations (State level, city at most) or school don't bug me too much even though I know someone determined could dig up info on me what that info if they were really really committed.
