I thought this thread was gonna be a bonfire, but it's managed to pick up one probably the most major reason as to WHY I drop people from am RP outside of the obvious things like bad grammar and spelling. It's their attitude and thematic crutches. I'd also bring up linguistic crutches shit like using the same sentence structure, but most of the RPs I see through to the end are with people who are thematically interesting to the point I don't mind some same-y language.
Thematic crutches are easy to explain and easy to note. There are people out there who really like their comfortzones. They like one thing or just a small handful of things and if you ever want to do something with them, it will mostly just be the same. Some people who've come here have gone so far to say that they've put down RP partners for YEARS because they want an exact scenario and nothing more. I'm guilty of doing this myself, I'm sure we all are to some extent. Some people just really like certain kinks to the point that they get comfy and can reliably back you up in unfamiliar circumstances. This varies from partner to partner however and some people might actually share your enjoyment for that crutch, so even this can be sorts swept under the rug is all parties involved are cool with it. This also kinda covers people who go "hi miss" and other similarly cringy approaches. It's a sign that someone is too comfy and has been too rewarded for staying into their comfort zone.
Now for the big one
Attitude. No one who isn't some ego driven bitchbreaking retard wants a sad sack. I have had TONNES of people come to me and just be sad and pathetic while asking for RP. I don't want to post my logs since they're not hard to recognize, but I've mastered the fine art of driving people mad with desire just talking to them. Now, I'm talking about dirty talking OOC, but discussing exclusively IC things. So, it's not your character's dirty talk, it's your dirty talk, but with absolutely no focus on you or the other person behind the keyboard. Purely IC dirty talk should draw from your character; not all characters will be good at it. I will say if you can't do it OOC, you absolutely will not manage it IC, so one's a stepping stone to the other.
There are five main tricks: practice, relax, learn from someone good, force yourself not to care, and have fun.
Practice is easy. Just do it often, and don't care if you suck. A week later, dig up the log and read it and see what sounds good, what sounds bad, and what you need to change. Try to adjust to that.
Relaxation is critical. If you're tense, if you're nervous, if you're timid, if you're ashamed, you'll suck at it. Dirty talking is just flirting with overt sexual themes. Ever meet a nervous flirt? Not a nervous person trying to flirt, but a flirt, who seems nervous. Doesn't happen. You don't have to become an invincible god of confidence, but if you can't open yourself up and let your sexuality and sensuality flow through your fingertips, you'll sound like an asshole reciting pickup lines at a bar. You need to be you. I know how lame that advice sounds, but it's true. What that means is, don't be the person you think the other person expects you to be, or wants you to be. That's fuckin' worthless, don't do it. Be who you want to be, and you'll find a way to be hot.

It depends totally on the kind of dominant character you want to play and the kind of story you want to play him in. Generally, a good dominant character needs to be confident and competent.
Focus hard on your spelling and grammar, you have a few mistakes. Organize your writing and space between paragraphs rather than just a break every line. Describe your character's mood and at least his general thought processes, your sub will almost certainly want to know these. Describe his body language.
It is not enough to abuse the sub. You want your reader to understand why–or at least be able to guess at why–the dom chooses to abuse the sub. Is he a sadist who enjoys her pain? Is he taking out his anger from someone else on her?

Some of my partners prefer to write in present tense, some like past tense. Some people use first person, third person, some even use second-person. Some people like to write many paragraphs, some only write a few words. Some people write in prose, some people put asterisks around their actions.
THIS IS WHY I SAY YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A GREAT WRITER. You only need to be flexible in your communication. And even then, you will never be expected to play with everyone.

Dominance is tricky. I'm not at all a dominant person in real life; I'm assertive, sure, and I have normal self-esteem and so on and so forth, but I don't bark orders or have people quivering at my feet from my sheer charisma. Yet, most of my partners agree I play some awesome dominant characters.
There are a few tricks (this is the same guy who posted the giant-ass wall of text about dirty talking, apparently I'm on a public service kick): first of all, you have to stop thinking of a character as being "dominant" or "submissive." Those are roles for a scene. I'm trying to make this general; applicable to a generally dominant personality as well as specific BDSM-type scenes.
A good dom can be quite passive, laid-back, and relaxed when he (forgive the masculine and feminine sobriquets; from here on out, "he" will be for doms, and "she" will be for subs; the same basic principles apply regardless of gender configuration) isn't "being" a dom. A guy who's "being" a dom all the time isn't called a dom; he's called a narcissistic asshole.
(Also, pardon all my subordinate and/or split clauses, side commentary, and disorganized writing; I'm slapping this together, not writing a real guide. Maybe if I thought people'd buy me a coffee for my collective RP experience and wisdom, I might.)
Now, can you get RP as a narcissistic asshole? Hell yeah you can; look how many people love bitch breakers and BBC and all the other mindless insipid zombie trash that confuses decibels for dominance. I don't call them doms; I call them substandard players—not kink shaming or anything here; it's not the kinks, it's the way they tend to be written and played.
If you want to play a real dominant, figure out what kind you want to be. Daddy doms are popular lately, but the cool, calm, in-control executive types are always a classic, as are "professional" dominants, which admittedy tend to be female ("dominatrix" is a profession; "dominator" really isn't). The best way to do this? Examine your character. Dominance is about confidence, competence, charisma, and control. The four Cs.
The style of dom you play should also be based on the type of sub you want. Example: I can't stand brats. It's, like, okay; we're doing the play here, I'm doing everything correctly, and your girl's just … ignoring that. Resistance is one thing; repetitive, persistent disregard for my guy's authority is just kinda stupid, and suggests you don't want to [i]sub[/i], you just wanna [i]fight[/i]. But hey, a friend of mine loves 'em—he never runs out of opportunities to [i]discipline[/i] them. If you want a little girl, your best bet is to play a daddy dom. (FYI, "little girl" doesn't necessarily mean loli; it means the dynamic and power relationship between characters. It's unusual, but you can have a DD/lg dynamic with an older woman.)

Confidence is key. Out of character, yes, but most importantly IC. Confidence is not something you can channel through your character if you are chronically insecure; if you don't know what confidence feels like because you've felt it, you need counseling, and prolly some Prozac. You can be scared that you're doing a bad job, even a little nervous, and still channel confidence through the character. Confidence isn't about bravado, it isn't about machismo, it isn't about volume (cf. bitch breakers, etc.), and it isn't about thinking you're invincible. Confidence is simply the unconscious belief that, whatever life throws at you, you can handle it. That you, like anyone else, deserves the best of life, and you aren't afraid to take it. Confidence doesn't mean your character isn't insecure—all humans are insecure. In fact, it can make a great scene if the sub knows just where to poke at the dom's armor; it can very quickly unfold into a lot of character development, along with some kinky sex. In fact, you could make an interesting dom one who's secretly tormented with insecurity, but puts on a brave, even smug face in the bedroom, and tries to live out who he wants to be, even knowing day to day on the streets, he isn't. Play with this. Find your style; confidence resonates across all your characters. Confident characters are more interesting period; if your character is shy, let him be certain in his shyness; if he's nervous, let him waver with conviction. Emotions are like chemicals; you never know what you'll get into you toss them in a beaker and apply heat. Usually, it's nothing that special, but every now and then you find something amazing.
Competence is key. It's human nature; we reserve our greatest disdain for those who believe themselves to belong to a group or class they do not. Imagine the fortysomething dad in a skateboard and a helmet trying to be cool for his kids; imagine the guy who maxes out his credit cards on luxury suits and a Rolex and a Mercedes with asswarmers to try and look rich—it's pathetic, right? That's why your character, whatever he is, must be competent. Not at everything; the guy who's good at everything is on the fast track to mary sue territory, and once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny. If he's a doctor? Make him a damn good one. If he loses a patient, make it matter. Make it hard for him to be a dom for a while after that; questioning himself, drowning in guilt. If he's an artist, perhaps he fuddles his masterpiece, and has to start over; again, this should matter. Should it always happen? No; then he's just incompetent. But the point is, competence is key to confidence, not least because, whatever situation you're in in life, you can always say, "oh, yeah? Well, I'm a really goddam great <profession>." That's powerful shit. Point is, no one wants to be dominated by someone who isn't good at something. And, no; unless you're playing a dominatrix (and even then), it can't be "domming people."
Contrary to popular belief, charisma is not an ethereal, ephemeral, undefinable quality. It is complex, and there are many kinds of charisma, but for simplicity's sake, I'll focus on the fundamentals: charisma is that ability to command attention, connect intimately to a person or group, and use that intimate connection to influence their behavior. Important note: unless you and your partner are attracted to each other OOC, it is not possible to create this feeling in the other player OOC. A lot of people seem frustrated by that; don't be. Unless you spend a lot of time cultivating a charming and charismatic personality in general, you won't be able to just [i]do[/i] that. Charm is the behavior; charisma is the tendency to behave in that way without really thinking about it. It saddens to say this, but charisma depends very much on your partner. The emotions aren't hot; they're directed through RP. Your partner has to recognize the charisma and react to it, and if they're too thick to pick up on it, there's not much you can do.
And last, control. Control of yourself, and control over others. Control might be the wrong word; influence is better, but it starts with an I. You aren't trying to invade someone's mind and dominate their every though (usually); you're trying to help them see that obeying your will is what they really want.

Things notably absent from this list include an ego dependence upon one's ability to get pussy, a sense of entitlement, a need to control or dominate others, a fragile ego in general, sensitivity to criticism, bullishness, lack of subtlety, sadism, and basically anything else that would make an otherwise cool, likable person into a gigantic pain in the ass. Wanna see how not to be a dominant? Check out all the PUA sites out there; you're in for a veritable safari of paper tigers. Using rote lines, practicing routines, studying behaviors that work for other people—I mean, literally everything they do is a great way to undermine your own confidence, because it's all laced with the fundamental idea: "you, as you are, are not good enough."
A dominant character doesn't need anything, except the universal human needs—emotional connection to another human, the respect of his peers, satisfaction in his work, etc., etc.
You want all that shit? Don't play a dominant character; play a cult leader. They're great at that.
Now, if you wanna amp it up a bit and go for some high-octane smut, you can exaggerate some of the traits. I say amp it up for a reason; as with distortion, playing exaggerated character traits is a fantastic way to let the audience feel every subtle mistake or misstep you make. You have to master it clean before you learn to shred; you have to play a real dom before you can play one larger than life. Otherwise, you wind up, again, with a narcissistic douchebag. I'm not offering advice on this one; if you don't feel what you to do and do it well, you aren't ready.
This got way too fuckin' long, and I'm not even sure it's that helpful, but I hope it helps you channel some of your own dominance into your characters.

All of this was dreary, boring, eye-rolling, and a chore to get through because of the formerly mentioned points.
Don't get me wrong - despite me intentionally coming off as a dick - but ya' need to work on your shit more. First and foremost, you have to work on flow. You have to figure out how to string sentences and - more importantly - words together in such a fashion that they are able to slip off the tongue as you speak them. You want to avoid any unnatural pauses whilst reading this, you want it to have a certain flowery element to it that plays with a readers mind to make them keep reading because it just hits all the right spots in their mind as it's recognized as something "nice" or "interesting".
Lemme just try and re-write this shit to put another spin on it and shit.

Were the only words uttered out in response as the girl would feel daggers glared into the back of her skull, venom dripping off every syllable as that imperious tone made its presence known. Fingers slowly spread across the sides of the woman's neck before gently digging them in, nails scrapping across that delicate patch of flesh for a brief moment - as if to test it's resistance, more than anything else - before easing their grip upon it. Digits tapping-n'-dancing across the side, inching higher and higher with each passing second as a treacherous warmth crashed across the woman's spine. Fingers curled inwards into a fist as merely the thumb stood outwards, bent at an angle to rest underneath the blonde's chin. Slowly applying more and more pressure upon it, forcefully twisting her head backwards despite the silent protests blaring against her gritted teeth, knuckles growing a ghastly white from the sheer strength of her grip whilst knees buckled underneath their own weight. Brows furrowed as the other palm reluctantly raised itself upwards as well, slowly batting away those stray strands of hair covering the girls face towards the side, only for eyes to finally lock upon one another. Ones glassy and unfocused, beads of tears clinging upon the edges as pupils trembled through that sea of white ; the other affixed in place, immobile and haunting, a subtle ember flickering across.
Alright I had a bit more fun than I should of writing this and it turned into a regular writing piece instead of a post but hopefully it gets the point across. Details help set up the atmosphere and the scene itself, subtle body movements and easy-to-miss reactions help assert a character's personality, disposition, and tone far more than words or thoughts ever could. It's about showing and not telling n' all that. As for flow, look through this shit. I have a very specific format I use when writing my posts and it's easy to figure out I rely heavily on certain words, phrases, or certain transitions to help write my posts up. If taken under a magnifying glass, they're easy to figure out, but it gets the job done. That's what I mean by flow. Find what works for you and develop it into something better. Don't listen to people that keep telling you to experiment with different styles or what not, they are full of shit and don't understand shit as far as smut itself is concerned. Find your comfort zone, expand upon it, figure out a way to adapt it to any and all situations, and you're golden.

Other words that work? Obelisk and pillar are pretty fine. Spire, altar and monument too - if you're going for a more worshipy feel. Take the tone of the scene into consideration when you choose your words.
