I find great solace from the internet ever since I was born. I remember having friends I could always count on and we'd do everything together (over the web of course) but ever since the mid 10s, I've been having a difficult time joining a community. I used to run a Teamspeak 3 server before Discord raped my userbase. Even had a few a Gmod servers running that were always at pop cap. I refused to move to Discord because I wouldn't be in control of the server and everything just died. Begrudgingly closed the community down a few months back after about 3 years of usercount bleed. Before that I hung out on vent.
Feel you man, things are changing. I'm hopeful that in the medium term future a more robust protocol similar to JanusVr can give us the metaverse we've always desired.

I feel you, dude. I was a moderator on a popular Team Fortress 2 server community and got a lot of close-knit internet friends from that community. I was kind of known as the 'chill' mod that would let things that didn't seem like that big of an offense slip through the cracks, because people don't like to be bullied around and want to just chill. The admin started to have health issues and had to shut it down in early 2016 and it just hasn't seemed the same since then.

I feel it man. I remember all the good times like when they used to mod the UT2004 servers and created a survival mode with unlockable weapons and super dope maps. Before that it was Tribes and Everquest that had the coolest of people. Those were the days when people were chill and friendly. Now its hard to find chill ass people to kick it with in the gaming world. Now i troll Gmod Swamp Cinemas and CSGO. 8CH is a cool place to read though and find other people with the same mindset.

I gotta say, Discord is actually pretty nice. Or rather, chatting on DIscord is, whereas the company and the client are absolute dogshit. I hate it with every fiber of my being, but I did find some great communities there which I don’t think could’ve ever formed without Discord, so I use it on a daily basis. Truth is, there’s just nothing better at the moment that is both so feature-rich and free.

We used skype with friends unironically, for everything. I get discord has more social features, like its channels are probably maybe like sweet spot between RSS, IRC (not in terms of privacy, just so you can announce stuff, etc.) and something like skype groupchat but it's not for me unfortunately. I'd have no use for it.
