I think Twitter strikes the right balance in this regard (well, almost – it's still a bit too ban heavy for my taste). You can still be a "racist" etc, but you have to find a creative way of expressing it. Neither Mastodon nor Gab took off, really. Mostly because Twitter uniquely functions as an online agora where the high and the low, the right and the left, the stupid and the sublime can all mix freely. If you want a sealed-off space where you can write your own norms into the wall, then a subreddit or a facebook group is better suited for the task. Yes, well I agree and I like Twitter. I think though that Mastodon's biggest mistake is its concept. Of course it will be nothing like twitter simply because of its fragmentation, not even speaking about community. Gab tried but it was clear from the beginning who is the target audience, no matter what owner said. + Twitter is already established for many years, people know it, famous people and companies use it and that matters. I know twitter profiles which are made by /pol/ boomers cleverly hidden behind tech themes (I spoke before about some *BSD people) and they are most of the time pretty open with their views especially in comments sections, video clips or whatever. The only instance I remember when some of them got terminated accounts was because of some phone number verification bullshit or because twitter decided their activity is suspicious based on people they follow (anti-spam protection or some shit, happened to me too). So I don't really know how big of a retard you must be in order to get banned from twitter.
