It's Mass Effect + some fanfiction. Not as detailed as Star dust but still pretty good.

Cuck who hates fun here:

I love breaking CYOAs by bending the rules between my fingers until I can create a loophole out of them to become the most powerful character ever. This game is more along the lines of "Take the stuff that's useful, take the stuff that's useful for your class, then take all the psionics skills if you want to crush ships with your mind and become invincible or just take a bunch of partners/ship upgrades."

The game is fun as hell. The world is fun as hell. There's just no way to break it. Every choice ends up being "Well everything else is worthless in comparison."

The first page is good. Every choice is viable.

The second page is where things get tougher, because there's basically no reason to even look at the first three rows of weapons, knowing the objectively better weapons are right beneath it.

I wish Psionics were just as powerful if not more so, but required more specialization to use effectively. That means more psionic choices throughout the CYOA. Imagine if there were weapons that were powered by and enhanced your psionic abilities, say a pistol that allowed you to convert your telekinetic force into plasma-like energy, or maybe something less weapon-like like a bracelet or just a floating orb. There could also be a ship system to further boost your psionics and ship shields and weapons that were directly powered by psionics as well.

Of course, the best way to use Psionics isn't with force at all. Pinch someone's carotid artery with your mind until they either pass out or die from the lack of blood flow, and then just let go. No evidence they were killed by anything but natural causes, even the victim probably wouldn't know it was happening.

Even if you are powerful enough to take on the whole universe, do you WANT to take on the whole universe? Do you want to kill or piss off everybody? Once you accept that killing everybody in the universe isn't necessarily the best option stealth is back on the table as a way to manipulate events and people how you want them.

But that's horrible because it becomes less of a choose your own adventure and more of an "if you want to be a psionic god then take all of the designated psionic perks".

You'll end up with one half of players being left with two or three points to actually play with because they felt obligated to take all the psionic perks, and one half of players that actually get to play the game but feel kinda weak because they're just some guy with a gun while there are psions flying around crushing spaceships with their minds.

Buddy established a universe for this CYOA on the races pages so it makes sense that everyone would be sharing the same one, or at least each of us would be in individual versions of that universe. In the former case, anyone who invests into Psionics is an invincible god of destruction that some guy with a gun can't do anything about. In the latter case, there are entire alien species that are built around the concept of psionics, so you'd be assuming that no one of any of those races ever got to improve their psionics past the basic option, but if that's the case then why wouldn't you take advantage of that and become the guy that explodes planets with a passing thought?

Technically there are a few cases where being a guy with a gun is a viable option, but that's the problem. It never goes beyond being just viable. The only reason to pick anything that isn't maxed out psionics is because you're specifically trying to avoid taking psionics

This is all assuming you're picking You as the thing that makes you special. Special:Armor is good if you want to play it out like a Gundam series. Special:Team is good (not really) if you want slice of life alien fucking. Special:Ship is the joke option.

>everyone is in the same universe

>this CYOA has companions

Actually a good point that I skipped over because I always try to skip the companions sections in CYOAs (they're either pointless or pick-the-girl-that-shares-your-fetish exercises). I did state the problems with every player being put into an individual mirror of that universe, though.

>psionics isn't even that good

>best gun might be able to put a hole in a ship

>best psionics can crush the ship into a small cube

>best armor can block medium arms fire completely

>best psionics can block the strongest ship-level weapons

>Powerful and all, but what if someone invents a psi blocker or something?

>people have already created weapons blockers (they're called shields and they don't do shit against psi powers

>Typhon powers are much cooler.

Actually true, but not necessarily stronger or more useful. Consider this: How does anyone deal with a psion that sees you and wants to fuck you up? The only real answer here is "kill the psion before they notice you" which can't be done from a distance because of psionic shields and can't even be done from orbit with a world-destroying laser because of psionic shields, so the only real answer is to poison their food or otherwise assassinate them, which applies to everything in the whole universe that eats food.

On the flipside, there are lots of ways to deal with a Typhonbuddy that wants to fuck a psion up. Typhonbuddies are probably the best counter to a psion because of stealth and disguise but anything short of a successful assassination puts the psion in a position of immediate advantage from almost any range.

Typhon Powers is about thinking outside the box and coming up with creative ways to use your powers to achieve goals that would be unattainable through more practical means.

Psionics is just making yourself invincible and crushing anything you don't like.

Apex is busted. Not even sure how the others turn out, but It says you get 3 VP for a companion with psionics, then it says Sun for example is worth 21VP. Even assuming that it's 3 + all the bonuses you could get, that only adds up to 18. Even if we add in the 3 she's missing, assuming I missed a skill somewhere or she got an edit that wasn't factored in, Synergy only effectively adds +1, so there's no way that would boost her to 28.

Even making all of those assumptions and fudging the numbers a bit, the ONLY way to win this scenario is to stack your team with Psionics. None of the other bullet points provide a significant boost. Shipfags only get +6 from their entire ship, the most a (you) could get for taking every single ability is 14. You need at least 61 for everyone to survive and at least 36 to survive yourself.

You're not meant to do well on all of them, I don't think. However, with a supreme superhuman Psion build you can at least avoid losing. I got through everything "passing" Ancient Machine (and winning nothing), and squeaking by Gods and Masters and Rat in a Trap. Only did well on Apex and Guardian Angel.

The two I mentioned are both "succeed or die", so you HAVE to do well on those.

I'd like you to tell me how you managed to survive (let alone do well) Apex without stacking every psionic companion you could. You can get 14 points from abilities, 6 points from ship, and 8 points if you buy the neuromod. You also get 1 point per weapon or armor upgrade, so you can technically survive if you take a fully loaded Mech or bring a ton of sidearms, but just barely and you lose one companion.

So the idea was me and my ship-fu taking on the galaxy. I have ridiculous psionics and cybernetics, so I don't need weapons or armor (one concealable sidearm is good in case psionics fail). She has an incredibly strong android body that would be upgraded later if we made it that far. Our ship is nearly unstoppable with both the firepower to destroy planets and the speed to outmaneuver and outrun anything (durability is only fair).

With the power between us to conquer civilizations if we so choose, I figure other companions would only slow us down or get in the way.

The result is that I die on the first mission because lol companions and weapon stacking is the only way. Doesn't matter that I could rip the entire place apart with my mind or that there's not a single typhon attack that could penetrate my personal shield, it's over before it begun.

I was born and raised on my ship. Alone. Don't know who my parents were, and neither does the A.I. apparently. The A.I. (Eve) is obsessive about protecting me, but at least that extended to raising me strong -as well as some weird genetic modding. My 18th birthday wish was to allow other people on the ship and to go on adventures. Eve reluctantly agreed.

The first few people who tried to join the crew had plans for my ship; so Eve ejected them through the airlock. Their employers still haven't given up.

>Drawback: Impaired Senses[Blind] = Hello Ladies

When I asked Eve why the women who joined my crew had unfocused eyes when they first met me, she mumbled something about "… dip in the gene pool… optics slightly damaged… psionic pheromones… get you more playmates". Playmates, Eve?! Really?! (;一_一)

>Dr. Morgan Yu(81)

Hounded our ship for months, spamming us with hailing requests that were never answered. Once Eve acquiesced to my 18th birthday wish, she was "welcomed" aboard. She was interested in the ship's origin, something about it being part of a legendary project 'Apex'. She was the first living breathing human I'd met in my life. I was too enthralled by how her lips needed to move to speak out words, how many times she'd chew her food, and the irregularities in her pulse whenever she sees me. She had a fight with Eve when she asked to run a diagnostic on me, and was vehemently rejected. She says that not all humans can cover ships in psionic barriers, or outrun an unladen android while carrying an armored other. I thought humans were the greatest, was I wrong? Am I the outlier?

>Refa' Xamin vas Guyya(82)

Picked up her escape pod next to a debris field. She said she'd been ambushed by pirates, so she programmed her ship to make several FTL jumps through them. The debris field was all that was left of two Frigates and a Cruiser that came in the way of her modded research ship. I didn't even need to allow her to stay, as both were all too happy to have her live in the engine room. She whispered to me one day at the mess hall that Eve and the ship were hyper-advanced even by theoretical standards. Not all ships skirt red dwarfs just to burn off all the accumulated filth on their windshield, nor can A.I.'s fully pilot and control a ship. Why am I starting to get the feeling that there's more to us than I thought?

Eve forbade me from leaving the ship, as watching over me through the suit's sensors wasn't enough. I proposed building her a body so she can follow me. >Bulwark(88)

Bulwark was fighting off raiders when I boarded the Qunari ship he was on. After I squished them all to paste, he walked up to me, and stated he was waiting for me to come. The ship was apparently bait for both the raiders to attack, and for me to come save it. He recited a message from his superiors, stating they liked what I was doing, though I maybe should start returning what I loot from the pirates to its rightful owners. He then asked to join my crew to help me in tracking down the rightful owners to all the loot we'd gathered over the years, as well as act as a liaison to the Qunari. He later suggested I join the Defenders of The Universe.

Bulwark directed us to a certain colony based on some Intel from his superiors. We picked up a transmission from some colony about a kidnapping. Intercepting the kidnapper's shuttle, me and Eve boarded his shuttle. After a brief interrogation via psionic telepathy, I deduced the location that the kidnapper was going to.

Picking off the sentries using my Falcon, we entered the facility. What we found there was a red painted facility... scratch that, it was blood. I was suddenly thrown off my feet to the wall by a red-haired red-tempered psionic. We engaged in a psionic 'arm-wrestle' which I barely held my own in, until Eve walked up to her and tased her. When she woke up in the med-bay, she was much calmer. The records from the facility didn't show where she was from, and she barely remembered she had a name: 'Sun'. She's staying with us for now.

I KNEW I wasn't the only powerful human!

>The Devourer

We got word of this being from our sources in the Qunari. They think that my vast psionic potential might allow me to communicate with this being, or at least solidify it long enough for a Particle Beam to incinerate it.

We came upon it as it was feasting on a green uninhabited planet As we approached, Eve charged up the Twin Beams, while I exited through the airlock, and flew using my telekinesis to get closer.

"Hello?"

"GREETINGS BIG CLOUDY ONE. NOT GOING TO TRY AND TEAR ME APART FROM THE GET-GO?"

"Big cloudy one?! Curious naming… no, I wish to talk if possible"

"HAH! YOU SPEAK. YOU ARE NOT LIKE THE OTHERS, TEAR APART FIRST, ASK QUESTIONS NEVER… AH, YOU ARE PART-HUMAN"

"Part? What's that supposed to mean?"

"WELL-OOF"

Eve fired on the being without warning. That wasn't the plan!

Eve told me on the suit's comms that Sun was trying to take control of the ship, and had already fired the first shots. The batteries readjusted, and aimed at me. I put up my barrier, even though I knew it wasn't going to be enough. The Twin Beams fired…

Suddenly, I was enshrouded in a thick mist. The mist solidified. I heard a telepathic grunt of pain, before the mist slowly dissipated.

"TAKE CARE OF YOUR BODY. IT IS RARER ᵀᴴᴬᴺ ʸᴼᵁ ᴷᴺᴼᵂ…"

The being was no longer there. According to Eve, it had shielded me from the blasts. Right now, the Bulwark was tackling Sun, but it was already too late, she had damaged the engines, and the ship was slowly drifting down to the green planet…

I used my telekinesis to slow down Eve's descent, allowing it to land without much of a hitch. Sun was calm when I came to her, acting innocently confused why she was being treated in such a way. I probed her telepathically, and found out she had some mental triggers that caused her to go dormant and follow a set of commands given to her. When that happened, and how, were irrelevant right now. I cleared her mind of the triggers, and scanned her twice again, before declaring her safe.

The crew were of the mind of executing her, as she was too dangerous.

I painted them the picture of a person, kidnapped before they fully matured, experimented on for five years, finally getting rescued by the first people who cared about their well-being in living memory, only to be executed for a crime they don't even realize they'd committed.

The crew relented, but insisted she be confined to the brig for the time being.

>Buried Hypernought

Refa' declared the ship unfit for travel for a few hours, so we had time to kill. While twiddling with the radio wavebands, Dr. Yu picked up a faint signal from the heart of the jungle.

We left Refa' to fix the ship while me, Eve, Dr. Yu, and Bulwark went to investigate. We found a huge ship wreck, half buried in the dirt, overgrown with vegetation. Scanning the ship, Dr. Yu said its composition was eerily similar to whatever our ship was made out of. Furthermore, while it looked different, the technology was of the same class.

Entering the ship, we found an abandoned campsite, with an active distress beacon that was set to activate if not updated every 12 hours. Its record showed it wasn't updated in 30 years.

Further into the ship, we encountered what we assumed were the owners of the camp, suspended in stasis, eyes open, but unseeing.

Alerted to the ship's defenses, we started moving even more cautiously, until we reached the bridge. Eve attempted to interface with the ship…

Alarms blared, turrets appeared out of nowhere and opened fire. Bulwark was quick, and covered us with his shield. I gathered my wits and activated a psionic barrier.

Eve stood transfixed, as if she couldn't believe what she saw inside the system. I asked Dr. Yu to break her out while Bulwark and me dealt with the turrets.

Dr. Yu seemed to deliberate on what to do, as the system proved unresponsive. She finally decided to apply her boot to the console -which surprisingly worked.

Eve was out of her trance now, and warned us that the ship was about to take off, and that we needed to leave now. I forgot all matter of restraint training that day, tearing through walls like hardened biscuits and charging through like a madman, followed by the others. We retrieved the explorers -now able to move.

As we cleared the ship's perimeter, it blasted off the planet, headed to god knows where.

Eve had a somber look on her face that day. She entered her private quarters and locked the door. She emerged a day later with a different look, some enhancements I knew I never gave her, and a more obsessively protective attitude than the already impossible level she exhibited. She casually hugged me out of nowhere now, and I'm pretty sure I heard her mutter something about having a child… brrrr

When asked about what happened on the ship, she was awfully cagey, but told us she knew where it was going, and that we should follow it

>Apex

After a few recitations of the "I know a song that'll get on your nerves" song, Eve relented and disclosed what she found out on the ship:

>A few years after first contact with extraterrestrial life, several centuries ago, Andrew Apex, a business mogul, and the richest man in human history, gathered the top scientists from every field in a city orbiting Neptune. He gave each one of them a blank cheque a mile long, and asked them to ensure humanity remained the apex predators of the known universe. Fantasy became hard science, limits were broken faster than they were set, there was nothing conceivable that wasn't buried in the dust by what was made. Until someone went too far…

Eve stopped the story as we neared our destination, a research space station with the call-sign 'Apex'. Can't be a coincidence.

The station was broadcasting a normal ping sequence, but Dr. Yu recognized a sub-signal embedded inside, an encoded call for help by her big brother, Dr. Alex Yu.

We spotted the hypernought docked in the research station, with scans showing it empty and inactive. We docked next to it. Our team: me, Eve, Dr. Yu, Sun (released from the brig, finally, and happy? again). Refa' went to examine the docked hypernought with a contingent of android security guards. She wasn't about to lose the chance to study another hyper-advanced ship.

The station was empty, and eerily silent. No security guards -nor any humans really- were in sight. As we went deeper, we started coming across corpses, ripped apart by something fierce, inhuman. I also had the most piercing of headaches, exacerbated whenever I looked at pens, chairs, mugs, everyday things. Dr. Yu looked just as uncomfortable.

And then it happened. Alarms blared, turrets appeared (déjà vu), doors sealed, and one of the tables grew an extra set of legs(pas déjà vu).

I saw white.

I awoke to see Bulwark smothered by the table, now with eight legs and a maw. Dr. Yu was running for her life, chased by a giant spider-like creature, while her clothes seemed to be growing tendrils of their own. Sun was desperately blasting another spider that seemed intent on jumping on me. Then I saw Eve pinned to a wall by a mass of tendrils, while she buffeted it with her plasma cannons.

I saw red.

I awoke this time to the sight of black matter splattered across the walls and floor, and looks of horror painted on everyone's faces (even impassive Bulwark). Everyone, except for Eve.

>One of the scientists discovered a way to turn humans into the apex predator to trump all apex predators. By injecting them with a special concoction, their body would become capable of shapeshifting into any number of preset forms. Further experimentation broadened the list of forms, until it became practically infinite. This opened the door to a new realm of possibilities; cells could reshape themselves into their prime form, outside matter of any kind could be introduced to the body and consumed nigh-instantly, organ rejection was no more a problem… all the scientists practically squeed, without exception.

>They used a rat as a test subject. They fed it simple foods initially, watching as it consumed them instantly. Then they went for the next step, the magnum-opus of their entire operation, they tested if it could triumph over a predator. They locked it in a cage with a Tarantula.

>The Tarantula easily consumed the rat, which cowered instinctively at the sight of a real predator. The Tarantula changed, its body elongated into strange dimensions, and broke out of the test-cage.

>What ensued was not even a massacre. Massacres had a form to them, a purpose. This was a butchery, a feeding, pure and simple. Every living thing the creature consumed, it assimilated, gaining new traits and abilities. As it quickly overran the city, a neural-biology scientist managed to reach one of the cutting-edge ships the city produced a few years ago. Heavily injured, she cast off from the city, before turning the ship's powerful Beam Cannons on it and blasting it to kingdom come.

>As she sat there, bleeding profusely, the scientist's life flashed before her eyes. Her family, she barely knew. Her friends, all dead by her hands or the creature's. No special other to speak of, married to her job as she was. She teared up.

>As the decades went by, her ship drifting outside the solar system, hiding from all human and inhuman contact, partly out of fear of persecution for her crime, partly out of self-loathing and self-punishment, she noticed how he time was slowly coming to an end.

She would not roll over and let the world pass her by. She would leave the world a legacy to shake it to its core!

>She searched through the medbay, finding an array of petri-dish grown stem cells, DNA vials of the world's most powerful psionics, and the last remaining bottle of the concoction. She consulted the helpful A.I. for instructions on how to use the IVF facilities, then she extracted one of her egg cells. One IVF later, she had her very own, growing baby. Her time was nearing, and she would not live long enough to watch it grow up.

The ship was already overrun by the creatures, however, and so the captain opened the airlock, flooding them all to the vacuum of space, while the damaged ship drifted, before crashing into an uncharted planet somewhere. Eve looked at me, tears dripping from the goddamned-bad-idea-tearducts in her eyes. She apologized for what she put me through, for not being there for me as she should have, and for making me a monster among humans.

I walked up to her, and slapped her palm, pic super related.

Eve's… Mom's and mine origin story revealed, the pieces of the puzzle fell together, aided by the arrival of Dr. Alex Yu. The Typhons and the creatures were one and the same, managing to survive in the vacuum of space, while some survived the crash landings the remains of the city went through, they spread through the galaxy. Andrew Apex used some of the concoction on himself, extending his lifespan immeasurably. After his 'deaths', he sometimes appeared to the world as his own secret son, and continued his work, other times he surreptitiously transferred his assets and re-branded.

Andrew Apex never stopped looking for remnants of the city. Once one of his scout ships found some Typhons drifting in space, he was overjoyed, putting some of the top minds of science on the job of reverse engineering the concoction, so he can improve it. None of them succeeded. Tentatively, one of the scientists approached his employer, and told him about a roommate he lived with, who upon giving a sample the scientist brought with him home to examine a cursory glance, made a very accurate and insightful observation about it. The roommate was Dr. Alex Yu. Intrigued, Andrew Apex tried to hire Dr. Alex for his secret research, but the doctor refused, wary of the shady dealings that always went on in the private sector, and saying he only took government contracts.

Andrew Alexander funded a government research facility through his current company, 'Transtar', under the secret condition that Dr. Alex be instated as the head of the station. A few months later, a Transtar owned shipping vessal accidentally jettisoned a cargo crate containing the Typhons in Apex's vicinity.

Unfortunately, the Typhons broke loose, as they are wont to do, and unlike the time with Morgan, they couldn't be contained anymore. Dr. Alex tried to contact the government, but his comms were jammed from somewhere below, on the planet the station orbited.

We decided to head back to the ship, to use the dedicated line to the ODTU to call for help. My and Morgan's awakened Typhon powers, coupled with Dr. Alex's ingenious usage of neuromods, Sun's powerful psionics, Bulwark's mass, and Eve's mass accelerator cannons, made mincemeat of what poor Typhon decided to stand in our way.

On reaching the ship, we found Refa' babbling in panic about an incoming torpedo strike set to destroy all docked ships, preventing us from leaving.

Me and mom looked at each other and smiled. While I covered the ship in a now-nigh-impervious barrier, she brought out popcorn for the firework display. The initial salvo carried EMP pulsers, disabling the shields, then the following salvos kept battering the barrier continuously, while it held on impressively. A particle beam strike followed, actually piercing the barrier. As out plasma-flash-blinded eyes cleared, we saw the result: it couldn't even leave a scorch mark on the paint-job.

We proceeded to scan our surroundings, to find a small fleet surrounding the perimeter. Captained by a famous pirate-hunter from the ODTU, whom didn't leave much of an impression on me, but it seemed I left a very bad impression on him, or rather, mom did.

He deliberately ignored our demands to be allowed to take off, claiming that he had been ordered to shoot down anything attempting to leave the facility, for fear of an outbreak of Typhons so close to a colony.

We decided, "screw it", and went to work, cleaning the station of Typhons methodically, one room at a time, while the android security team set up a perimeter. There were many close calls, with Bulwark losing an arm, and Morgan sometimes getting mistaken for a Typhon whenever she transformed mid-battle. When we found half the rooms we'd cleared filled up by more Typhons than when we went through the first time, we finally realized Apex station was a lost cause.

Deciding against rigging it to blow, as that would just fling the Typhons in so many random directions to eventually end up om another station and cause the same situation all over. Instead, me, Sun, and Morgan started using our telekinetic might on dismantling the station piece by piece, and flinging them at the surrounding ships, which promptly vaporized them.

A month later, we had downsized Apex into a manageable size, and started clearing it methodically again.

>Gained Neuromods: Enhanced Senses+ (no more glasses. I see everything!), Typhon Detection

Dr. Alex decided I needed the mods to be able to hunt the Typhons better.

After we were done and sure the station was Typhon free, we prepped our ship to cast off, only for the pirate-hunter to stop us, saying our ship still showed Typhon presence. We tried to explain my and Morgan's conditions, but he quickly and gleefully dismissed them as fantasy stories. We decided to ignore him and cast off anyway, sure of our ship's durability against his firepower… only to find the engines were sabotaged via a stealth drone that got through the shields. The pirate-hunter bid us goodbye, stating that it was impossible to fix our engines even if we were at a top-notch repair factory. We were stranded…

Also, seriously, some of the stuff I heard from the other Outriders (can't access their specific mission logs and vice versa, the Alliance wants no leaks about some of the stuff we do) makes my stuff look pedestrian in comparison. Still, it's a fun time sharing stories between us, brothers and sisters and all that.

Baby Outrider's first "Oh God Why?!" mission.

So, it started with a distress signal aimed at us when we stopped by the colony of Clarke System, just helping out the colonists with random things, you know engineering, medicine, putting up structures, that kind of thing. It was one of the things that Outriders were very well known for, finding a colony and stopping by the place from time to time to help out however they can. Anyways, so there we were, about to head out, when we got this distress signal from the moon of the colony, with the only there being a private Research Station in its orbit, so you know, figured that we should take a look. Things…escalated quite quickly after that.

For one, the Doc, Morgan Yu, insisted on coming with us, her brother was stuck on a station that was sending out a distress signal after all. Figured sure, why not? Which saved our asses repeatedly after the station's delayed lock down kicked in and we were stuck inside…with Typhons. The Doc could sense them somehow, and while it should honestly have raised red flags with all of us, especially RoboRick, we pretty much just shrugged and trusted her to point out any hostiles. Thanks to her, we were able to respond much more quickly to ambushes, clearing away through the decks as we looked for survivors, as a note, the Doc's brother seriously needed to update his internal network's firewalls, I wasn't the only who was insulted by how easy it was for the Doc to hack into the system and take some control over things.

Luckily, we managed to find the survivors including Dr. Alex Yu, and after that bracing adventure, after we got back to the ship and talked about what was going on and our options, we decided to to purge the station of all traces of Typhons for the sake of the Colony nearby. Dr. Yu also revealed a little secret about the Doc and offered to activate that Side of her, which was rather unexpected and a little shocking, but hey, Doc's Doc and she wasn't going to let us go out again without a way to sense the Typhon. Between the efforts of the Security Team protecting the survivors on the ship and our own adventures combing through the station while Aquila trained Doc in the finer arts of squishing someone with her mind, we managed to purge the station over the course of the next few days, slowly making our through the station inch by inch, making sure we did not miss a single spot.

It was a week or so after the whole operation and us returning to the colony to just distress and relax when the Doc and Dr. Yu caught up with me playing cards with the local cardshark, wishing to talk to me about something back on the ship. Back on the ship and the medbay, Dr. Yu thanked us again, sending some cash along our way, but then revealed that he knew a little of the Outrider project, luckily he quickly followed up with the Code that indicated he was in the know and that he was authorised to let one other know. He and Doc were the kids of one of the geniuses behind the entire program and he had been working on ways to lessen the damage done by the procedure to the subjects. In a way, the Doc was part of that work, so he decided to let Doc in on the secret and offer me some neuromods that would help me out.

Saving a member of Project Outrider and gaining a legitimate trained doctor who knows about the ins and outs of us Outriders…not a bad haul wouldn't you say?

> [E2] Races [Amelia Piloting+Precision [+4], Tech Skills [+7], Refi [+1], Deus+Cyberwarfare [+4]. Total: 16. Result: Victory! Gain 8 Points and Ajax.]

Getting in on this was a bit of a funny story. We had been on Efziro for 2 days chilling in general after our last mission when I ran into one of the other Outriders, Catherine. You see Cathy was one of the senior Outriders and was generally seen as the Big Sister, there was only one problem, she loved her some gambling. The only reason why this was not a big issue with the brass was that she wins as much as she spends and is generally quite smart about when it was appropriate.

It was Efziro's turn to host the Intersystems Race, acting as both the start and finish of the race that would see hundreds of racing craft hurtle past other Systems, often having to avoid Asteroids and Comets in the process. It turned over a remarkable amount of money in bets alone, and Cathy wanted a piece of that action. She had heard of Amelia signing up with my team and like the rest of the Alliance Military, knew of her need for speed, so she offered that she would sponsor Amelia's entry into the race, which basically locked her into placing her bets on us alone.

Two days later, Amelia and I, alongside Doc, Grüner, Sumia, Eve, Julea, and Refi found ourselves before what was a VERY plain looking small craft, according to Cathy, it helped increase the odds and thus the payout, but to the rest of us it just meant we had more work to do in the week given to prepare our craft using only the tool and parts we were provided with. Refi couldn't stop giggling though, as far as she was concerned, she had been given a blank cheque and allowed to go wild, and wild did we go, even making sure that the craft remained plain looking just to add insult to injury.

On the day of the race, we recieved quite a bit of laughter from rival crews when they noticed our plain starship, but after Amelia more or less blasted past everyone to be the first to reach escape velocity, those chuckles were muted and we were not bothered for the rest of the race as we kept an eye on Amelia's progress and ship status…crushing the various attempts at Cyberwarfare before they even got started went without saying.

Between our combined efforts and Amelia's own epic racing that saw finally live out her childhood dream of bringing in the gold from the single biggest racing event in the galaxy, we found ourselves rolling in cash from a VERY generous Cathy and races sponsors, while Amelia found herself the centre of the attention of a large number of fans and sponsors as her stunts and record-setting pace kept everyone glued on their screens. Meanwhile, we the mechanics found ourselves talking with a mechanic wishing to come aboard, an amazing one too if the hyperventilation of Refi was any sign.

> [E3] The Ancient Machine [Armour [+3], Movement [+3], Weapons [+3], Deus [+6]. Total: 15. Result: Not a scratch! Armour gains Nanobots. Eve upgraded.]

…fuck this one in particular. Now I got that out of the way, allow me to spin you a tale of how I finally got my "That One Mission" for prosperity.

It started very simply, we were mapping out the unexplored regions of the Large Magellanic Cloud, MUCH further afield than we usually are, but hey, it was a fun time of science and exploration and we even found some planets available for colonization by the Alliance and her Allies. It was when we were relaxing by a cooling Dwarf Star that we found that fucking artificial satellite.

Don't get me wrong, it was pretty neat to find a ship/station that was radically different in design from everything we knew of, including the Inusannon archeo-ships and stations. So figured that we ought to take a closer look, Faezi agreed, and had pretty much every recording instrument on board focused on it, scanning it on multiple wavelengths while I got the boarding team together and with Eve using the same scanners as her main body, we scanned the internals as we moved through the station without gravity or life in general.

Then we found the Spider.

Now generally speaking, us Outriders tend to always be holding back, our strength, speed, psionics…everything is dialled back when around normies because we kinda tend to cause panic attacks when we go full throttle. Unfortunately, stuck there as I was without the team and the comms scrambled, I had no choice but to cut loose. It felt…strange I guess, to pull that mental trigger that suddenly made the world slow all the way down, letting me dodge mass rounds, moving fast enough to find cover to activate my Suit's stealth function and let me stay moving even as the Combat Droid and I traded shots. My part in this was simple, all I had to do was to stall for time to let my team hack through the sealed door and maybe drain the droid's shields so that it would have to divert energy from its other systems to repair them. It worked beautifully, the jamming cut for just picoseconds, but to Eve, they may as well have been hours.

When my team finally charged in through the still opening door, ready to fight, they found me sitting down next to the shut down robot, the entire room was completely trashed, but to their stunned amazement, there was not a single scratch on my suit. Before the questions flooded in, I quickly had Eve double check that the machine was shut down, then I gave orders to have it examined and its technology catalogued to be sent to high command as soon as we were able to.

My suspicions about the combat robot were proven right a few hours later as Ajax, Refi, and the rest of the Engineers all threw their hands up and called bullshit after an extended analysis session. Eve was quieter than usual during the analysis, until the end when she asked what I intended to do with the main body. She had been making a number of blueprints which included upgrading her Android body and an improved version of the self-repair module, and she was willing to share all but the upgrades to her Android Body.

However, in order to upgrade her body, she needed the robot, so we would not be returning with any kind of physical evidence of our latest adventure aside Eve's secret upgrades to her body. When asked why, she quite bluntly pointed out that even if I was a Super Soldier, I was still flesh and bone, and I needed someone who could protect me from the stuff that even I could not handle. She was the Quantum AI of the ship after all, and thus a legitimate part of the Outrider Project, she knew my capabilities intimately and my limits.

As it turned out, alongside a sneaky upgrade to my Hardsuit, Eve's upgraded ridiculously spec'd body was the only thing we came out with from that entire waste of time. A young and upcoming archeologist just "happened" to discover the wreck a few days after we returned to Alliance Space to refuel, resupply, and get some reinforcements (other Outriders) to properly explore and secure the Station / Ship as an outpost and RnD centre. He happened to be a former Outrider Candidate, a member of my Class in fact, and had quit the Alliance Military after flunking out of the Project, disappearing for a few years before resurfacing as an Archeologist.

If there was ever a picture perfect example of Escalation, it would be this mission, which, luckily for all of us, we had learned our lessons from our previous adventures and missions and jumped in making plans and preparing all the things. Seriously speaking, the stuff that they teach you in the conventional military works for the levels they work on, I had to rewrite how I approached my missions on multiple occasions! ON THE FLY!

As my first legitimate public operations mission with far-reaching diplomatic results, my team and I needed to get this right the first time around, so the moment after we got the mission briefing from the outgoing King we sat down in the ship and planned the entire thing out as looked over the maps of the site of the coronation, Darius and I especially marking points of interest and chipping in every now and then about our experiences. With a plan solidly in place, we moved on to calling favours and getting hires, Faezi and I leaded on our own networks for additional intel to add to the plan, working in concert with Rick profiling those persons of interest and a few others. Meanwhile we got word from Aquila that she actually managed to call in some off-duty Justicar and some other Asari Commandos she knew personally to assist in the security detail. Sumia and Eve were seemlessly slipped into the palace staff, each with a list of possible agents and sympathizers they needed to keep an eye on. With some some last minute security additions such as Darius setting up what he called was the perfect oversight point, camouflaging Iris and her Mech as a Last Resort measure, and everyone agreeing that I should openly be there as her personal guard for some reason, we were as ready as we could be for the ensuing shit show.

And what a show it was.

So the first attempt happened out of public, I only got word of it from Eve's transmission that she caught one of the staff poisoning the wine, the would be poisoner immediately spilled what she knew, Rick with Palace Security team quickly identified and quietly rounded up the confused bunch up. After the toast went well, the Entourage stepped outside the Temple of Lords for the new Queen to greet the Public, and of course that's when a very loud crack echoed over the square. With the civvies and some of the Royal Entourage panicking, Darius reported over our network that had just taken out a sniper, which to me sounded like the perfect time to bug out…and casually back-hand the Royal Uncle Goras, who was shifting closer to Queen Arwen with a concealed knife, I mean, really now, Outrider here, enhanced senses and reflexes come standard. When I reported that, I could practically hear the face-palms from Rick and Faezi over missing something so obvious, Darius also mentioned he recorded the entire thing so they watch the moment.

I later learned that some of the civs had recorded the moment, which went viral over the G-Net and became a meme…my fellow Outriders never did let me live it down.

Anyway, bugging out, with Goras held by Aquila and a few other Justicars, we escorted the rest of the Royal Family their ride, arriving just in time to see a speeding skycar hurtling towards us. I simply snorted as I began to direct everyone to get into their cars, meanwhile a random parked skycar flickered and a VERY distinctive German-built Superheavy Battle Mech stood up and target-locked the helpless vehicle. Needless to say, everyone got a live demonstration of the stopping power of Iris' pride and joy that day, and treated to the Lack of Fucks given by an Outrider who was just done with that day's shit.

…which also got meme'd to hell and back as the Out-of-fucks-Rider.

A few days and an astounding number of arrests later, Queen Arwen was on the throne and ready to lead her kingdom, and while we got paid for the gig, she insisted on giving us a proper royal reward in a public ceremony, which thankfully had no shenanigans lurking around. In private though, we also were given a request from one Princess Selyse, younger and more adventurous sister of the Queen. She wanted to travel with us and see the wider Galaxy in all its glory, both the beautiful and the ugly. Needless to say, with the crazy amounts of cash we got from her Majesty and a possible contact with the higher echelons of the Elves, we really couldn't say no. Thankfully, the rest of the crew quickly warmed up to her, even with her staunch pacifism.

Question, what do you get when 10 Outriders and their crews are called in to work with an Alliance Military Operation against Militant Cultists? Lots and lots of dead cultists.

It was a few months after the Coronation of Queen Arwen, and in between making visits to the Clarke Colony, we've been travelling to a number of high-profile diplomatic meetings thanks to Princess Selyse as her security detail. It was at a military expo I ran into another Outrider, a quiet man who called himself called Dawning-Forest, he mentioned that there was something he needed to pass on so I should stick around. Later that evening, we walked into our hotel room, only to find him there with a full dinner waiting for all of us, and with a small playful grin he mentioned that it was his 'thing' that he enjoyed doing to other Outriders. During the dinner that followed, he gave us an invitation, there was a major Alliance Operation about to take place, and the Brass had requested that the Outriders should assist, and after checking out my record he figured that I was seasoned enough to take part.

Operation [Riders of the Storm] was multi-pronged strike with the Alliance, Turian, and Aquiod Militaries doing the grunt work, forcing the majority of the Cult to focus most of their forces on them while the various Special Forces were to make precision strikes to disable key facilities and defences. The Children of the Inusannon were, at first, nothing more than a slaving ring and a bunch of pirates, but with the full extent of their threat now revealed they could no longer be allowed to exist.

We were scheduled to make our as soon as the first bombardment went down, with the Frigate hurtling to the ground things got bumpy as the ship opened fire, clearing the way for a low-altitude drop of two dropships (carrying APCs), a hover tank, a superheavy mech, and an angry android.

The landing went off without a hitch, we quickly got ourselves situated and running, but due to the hectic anti-air and anti-orbital defences surrounding the base we were supposed to assault first, we weren't able to land as close as the initial plan had given us. That was a blessing in disguise though since we had to land a little closer to an Anti-Orbital Cannon that had been overlooked because it was half-built, sadly its targetting and support systems were complete enough that it was operational though at the serious risk of overheating and even exploding. Unfortunately for them, we had a free Frigate with a Cyberwarfare Suite and a Quantum AI called Eve flying around, and not having fire support from the Howitzer was an easy trade-off for turning that Orbital Cannon on to the Cult Fleet until its destruction.

Again, I reiterate, anti-cyberwarfare measures such as basic firewalls are EXTREMELY important.

One of the best results from that mess with the Orbital Cannon was that we managed to get a Spec Ops team to ride with us. The Buccaneers were slated to be part of Main Assault spearhead, but the Cannon's capture accelerated the timetable on that and we were able to get more support attached to our assault. Which only allowed us to reach our first objective that much faster.

It was a base that held hostages, and thankfully we captured and secured it fast enough that the Cultists weren't able to begin the executions. The next part of the audacious plan started at that point, with our Frigate hovering close enough to the base that the Dropships were able to rapidly ferry the hostages quite quickly under an absurd amount of cover fire from all Friendlies in the area and soon enough, the Frigate flew off-planet through a secured corridor for precisely that moment.

When that was done and we reported in, we were given 15 to reach the next point where we would assault one of the bases identified as one of the Cult Leader's safe house alongside Buccaneers. Which we were able to do, but then had to hold the place against an increasing number of desperate attackers, and hold we did until two other Outriders, Dawning-Forest and Cathy, showed up with their teams to give us a hand. At the end of the day, the Operation was declared officially over, with all Cultist Forces either running, captured, or dead.

The Operation as a whole was a resounding success and for our part we were given a nice chunk of change. More importantly though, the Frontier Buccaneers saw what my team and I were all about and they liked what they saw.

Remember that Archeologist who had jumped on that archeo-station/ship and gained galaxy-wide renown? Yeah, turns out I should have been paying a little more attention to him. Also, the other Outriders are never going to let me live down the fact that I was ambushed, gassed, then taken in what was supposed to be a sting operation.

Ever.

Anyway, that embarrassment led me to my current predicament, bound in the brig of a really grimy station, with one dude coming in to try to slap around a few times. First he tried with his hands…he broke his wrist, then came his favourite baton, that broke, and while I'll admit that I was a bit of dick for laughing at him, I still say that the cattle prod was a little much! Still, got him to rage out enough that the other guards had to jump in to stop him, and distract them long enough for me to break out of my bonds. Their looks were a thing of beauty.

The ensuing running battle of me against the pirates on the way to the armoury where they stashed my stuff was quite possibly some of the most fun I've had in a while, especially since I had cracked into their comms using a radio I found…along with a few of their security systems, cracking IFF codes isn't all that difficult if you know what you're doing. I also got to find out the identity of that Archeologist, Brett Hart, he was the top of the class back in the Outrider Selection Trials, but he completely flunked the psyche tests, giving up way too quickly on some or rage-quitting in others, earning him the dubious honour of being the first soldier in the Alliance's history to be permanently barred from the OSTs. Something that had rankled him something fierce, especially after I made it in, so he figured that I'd make for a good target to work off his frustrations…however, there was one tiny problem.

I was no longer the quiet guy in the unit he bullied. I was no longer the “passable” shot and hand-to-hand combatant. I was no longer the isolated wimp in the unit.

I was still quiet, but I had confidence. I had been trained by the best of the best before I was let loose on the Galaxy. I had a team and crew I could trust my back to, and they were coming, pissed as all hell.

It was when I got to the armoury and retrieved my stuff I got an urgent hail from Eve and the others, answering with our little code and informing them of the situation we figured that instead of just busting me out, we ought to teach everyone here and across the Galaxy a lesson that would stick.

Darius also threw in some cheap shots my way, but that was Darius, he was a dick, a bro, but a dick.

The complete rout that followed taught me a few things as well about my wonderful crew and team. Firstly, Faezi knew a fuck-tonne of very dangerous people who owned a lot of guns. Secondly, for a pacifist, Selyse was still the princess of the Elven kingdom, and with that comes access to Elven Special Operations Teams. Thirdly, the Buccaneers are REALLY good at training others, the Security Crew and a few of Team were using SO tactics as they cleared their way to our meeting point.

Which, coincidentally enough, was a dock that was still in control of the Pirates, and Brett was running towards as fast as he could. A shame that he had a pissed off, fully armed Outrider after him, said Outrider's team and crew closing in from the opposite side, and, as he saw when he got to the Dock only to see lots of destroyed combat drones, fighters, and some ships bugging out in the distance, an incredibly well-made starship that had been made even better by the resident Engineers, their goddess, and her protege.

His choked sob of terror was the last sound I allowed him to make before ending him right there and then.

> Drawback Nemesis removed

A few days later, after a lot of disturbing giggling from both Faezi and Selyse, they broke the news that any and all signs of underworld bounties on me and my team were scrapped, everyone had heard of the shipment of Whup Ass we opened up on the Pirates and their allies. No one wanted any of it.

> Drawback Wanted removed.
