The effort put into generating new content would be commendable, if misguided (rather than generating shitloads of choices, it would be better to spend time on creating a smaller number of more meaningful/interesting ones). But the utter lack of effort on presentation just kills any desire to go through with it.

A wall of text in thin black font on white background (except for occasional word in non-black colour which may or may not be readable on white) presented in default book paragraphs – a bit wider than is comfortable for reading – with a few borderless images dropped in (those are either stuck on the left with no floating, or horribly stretched across the page… would it kill you to at least keep pixel ratio?).

Oh, and the prologue page is hideous. It's littered with all those differently formatted words (and every single one looks ugly and out of place) that scream of 90's idea of “design”.

Spirit Gift:

>Hermit

I'm gonna be rollin' with the wizards and shit.

>Key Master

Immediately useful in every world or universe I visit. Like reading a wiki article on a game you're about to play, it gives a huge advantage. I can also choose to lock a world so that I don't have to worry about things interrupting my plans.

>Recluse

I like to take my time with things, and this will help me a lot with what I have planned.

Powers:

>Kinship

>Charismatic +

>Beauty +

>Tongues +

I can talk to anyone, and have camaraderie even with animals. I intend to stick around on worlds I visit so being able to make friends is important.

>Neural Jack +

>Occultist

>Mentality ++

I can access the internet and the Glyphosphere remotely, and browse the Glyphosphere to learn more magic as I please. Occultist + isn't necessary so I'm just spending one point.

>Stylish +

>Training +

>Elementalist + (Water)

>Elementalist + (Air)

>Elementalist + (Fire)

>Energy Attack ++

>Elemental Energy

I look cool and, more importantly, can set off a huge burst of power after some building up. Training ensures that my improvements keep, and I intend to do a lot of training. Water and Ice pair together perfectly in a single element, Water and Lightning pair together to create an offensive core, and Water and Air combine for lots of utility. When all else fails, kill it with fire. I don't plan on spending too much time in the ocean, in the skies, or in volcanoes so I'm only picking the second tier of each element. Energy Attack ++ lets me actively absorb the elements when needed.

>Familiar ++

My bro and possibly my hasubando.

>Regeneration

>Immunity +

>Endurance ++

>Immortality

Immortality is useful. I only needed one rank of Endurance but I had two points conveniently left over, so I basically get an extra 8-10 hours a day I can spend on training or relaxation.

Drawbacks:

None. I can't afford any extra burdens.

Patrons:

None. I don't want to pursue their goals.

Perks:

>Scholar (Free)

Immediate knowledge is invaluable, given the amount of time I just saved on having to learn things for myself. An immediate knowledge of magic is also too useful to gloss over.

>Resonance (Free)

Like Scholar above, but in relation to things I can't "learn". It's invaluable in that it saved me a lot of time that I otherwise would have needed to spend on learning my own powers.

>Home + Abode

The amount of stress I'll be taking on in my endeavors necessitates intense amounts of fun and relaxation, which is something the Abode perk can offer me. Assuming that the Abode is open to me regardless of restraints or potentially game-over scenarios, I can give up on a failed quest and live out the rest of eternity playing God in my own personal solar system.

>Herald

Given my charismatic qualities, I should be able to befriend my Herald. Though he can disobey me, he won't outright betray me, and I doubt that I'd give him any orders that he would purposefully disobey. I won't be specific with his powers, but I will give him the Lazarus power so that in an absolute worst case scenario, I can still be brought back to life. Preferably he would be able to access my Abode so that he can recover me in peace and without any potential issues.

Items:

>Magus Tome (Free)

Of course, a necessary tool for learning magic.

>Armor (Light)

>Armor (Power)

>Armor (Energy Shields) x6

>Battle Moon x5

A perfectly solid defensive system that protects me without encumbering me. Energy shields and battle moons ensure no one can fight me from a distance, and if they overpower a single shield or moon then another can immediately take its place.

>Magus Hood

>Magus Catalyst

Gotta have the right equipment for the job.

>Ranged Weapon, (Light) +(Gauss)

A Mag-Rail Pistol. Backup weapon that solves the problems magic can't.

>Miracle Talisman

>Miracle Manuscript

For my Herald. If he can't read the Manuscript then I'll spend Powers points on making sure he can.

>A.I. (Civillian Model)

To assist me in maximizing the productivity of my training and studying.

>King's Road Writ

Gotta get around the Multiverse somehow.

Companion:

Due to my Spirit Gift being Hermit, I can only take one companion.

>Magus Alder

Not only can he teach me magic, but he also seems the most suited to do so. He is the innovator that created the spells and items that define this universe, and as such I want to be tutored by him. His drawbacks, for the most part, do not affect me. Even when he inevitably passes away, my Herald may opt to bring him back to life if he consents beforehand, which buys us at least another half millenia. There are better tutors for the basics, but I want more than tutoring. I want an immersion-based master apprenticeship.

The Plan:

I'm not leaving Earth until Magus Alder has thoroughly approved of my magical skills. Whether this takes 100 years, 500 years, 1000 years, or even longer than that. My powers increase constantly due to Recluse and Training working in tandem. With such a constant focus on my magical ability, I may eventually surpass Alder but at that point I would be more eager to teach him and bring him to even greater heights so we may innovate together. By the time other Incarnates clue into my presence, I should be able to take them on without issue due to the exponential growth I'd experienced. I don't plan on actively seeking other Incarnates out, so I may be able to use my charismatic qualities to take a bounty off of my head for good. If I do intend to ascend to full-on godhood however, I should be more than prepared for the job when that time comes. Magic is also hunted by many of the major Patrons, but I don't intend on abusing my power so I hope not to draw their ire toward myself.

Quests:

These are only to be taken after I've completed my apprenticeship.

>The Demiurge Masquerade

Harmless fun, and a good opportunity to put my charisma to use and try to slowly take the target off of my back. Friends I make here are enemies I won't have to fight later. It's also a very low risk quest to take on, and lets me measure up the competition to see what areas I might need to train more. Maybe I'll even find a training partner.

>Ball Dress

Considering my closet is relegated to Earth clothing that I can afford and a few pieces of protective equipment, a formal dress is actually a huge boon to my ability to formally socialize on other worlds.

>The Painted World

My final test before truly going out into the world as a master of my craft. I want to explore and test my limits, and this isn't as intense as some of the other quests could be.

>The Staff of Longbeard Kendrick

An immediate power spike to set my journey off right. By now I should be able to protect myself from magical attacks well enough, so hopefully the drawback doesn't prove to be irrecoverably fatal.

>Sajula the Tower of Flame

Unfortunately, this is a quest I'll need to abandon when the time comes. I'm self-interested and can't take on the throne. I'll do what I can to bring it back to its former glory, but I can't be the one expected to lead it once I've finished.

>Sword of Sunlight

Given to my Herald as a gift, for mutual benefit.

>Vega Twin Space Station

Might as well end it on a genre shift. Everything I've done quest-wise so far has been in the realms of magic, so forcing me into a sci-fi environment is the final frontier. Once I've mastered this, I've mastered everything.

>Cosmic Flyer Ship

I've finally got a ship of my own, and a good one considering I don't really want more than 50 people in my ship anyways. Hopefully my Herald can Animus a crew for me.

Endgame:

Having ascended, all I really want to do now is go around and have some fun hanging around in worlds and doing whatever I want. Maybe I'll join the Adventurer's Guild if I run out of things to do on my own but otherwise I'm happy just having my Familiar and my Herald to hang out with while we check out all the worlds the Multiverse has to offer.

Something I Noticed…

With The Ultimate Monstrosity you get your reward either after you committed a lot of truly depraved acts or when he randomly decides to do it.

SCP Prime Weapons Facility: Teeth for Coins

The Path of the Dragon: Expedition to the Arch-Dragon Peaks

Reward: Spear of the War God

Quiet SOS of Ithaqua: Snowfall & Nightmares

Reward: Bloodstone

Alright, spent a few days mulling this over.

I went for a combat-focused build, the powerset kind of reminds me of the Prototype games. I always enjoy being able to be a shapeshifting monster. I plan on being an evil character, parties made up of evil characters don't really interest me though so I tried to pick neutral-ish characters whom wouldn't just leave because of my behavior but would still provide some sort of foil. Hopefully I can avoid The Aeon enough to not get into any serious danger, if I do have to fight it the War God spear will probably help but I aim to make peace eventually since I dislike killing off unique creatures. Otherworld should be survivable, just a bit of hands-on psychoanalysis, right? Anyway I don't plan on taking much of an initiative in hunting down the other incarnates unless a good opportunity presents itself or I get wind of a particularly weak one, seems a safer bet to work on accruing power through other means and hold out for that bit of God-flesh the Monster has. Quests: I imagine SCP will be taken on pretty soon after picking up Typhon and Caroline, Path of the Dragon seems a very good opportunity for picking up valuable knowledge and I do have two scholars in my party. As for Ithaqua I'm mostly just interested in what's happening there, and that Bloodstone pretty useful for if the War starts up again in earnest.

The descriptions for magic and miracles seem really bland and unappealing, it would benefit to have more exposition on the nature of the two rather than just saying "magic can do anything". Also making the magic and miracle powers actually increase your intrinsic metaphysical power rather than just front-loading some spells let you learn quicker would make them a lot more attractive to purchase.

>all these people complaining about it being a slog

It isnt even a slog at all… If you genuinely have issues reading this, that is a you problem. It shouldnt take too much time at all. There is probably like 10 pages of actual reading if you dont read the companions list. As in, if you were to downsize the text to a normal cyoa size, it would be about the same length.

>actual criticism

There are way too many companions, and they are uninteresting. You are leaning too heavily on the "infinite universes, infinite possibilities!!!" thing too much. I mean, seriously, a nazi soldier from a utopian Nazi timeline? A musclebound nurse with a shaved head because "muh breaking expectations"? We get it, in an infinite set of possibilites, anything could happen… You should throw it out and consider writing something where you can actually use some creative design. Also, I just want to point out, in an infinite set of universes, there is actually no real reason to expect them to be different, especialy radically so. This obviously doesnt exactly apply to this, because it is your writing and it is how you wish it to be, but it seems like it is just accepted as a fact when it is really just an idea. There is this assumption of the butterfly effect changing everything, but realistically there are certain ways the world works that will be stable constantly. If it wasnt so, we wouldnt expect most of the universes to be able to cross. Imagine if a universe with different physics entered another one, how would they interact? Could they even? If gravity doesnt exist in my universe, can I fly in this one? Its a strange question.

Also, there are two many quests, and none of them feel meaningful. These too suffer from the "le infinite universes!!!" This makes a lot of them just straight uo bad. They are uncreative, and some of them seem broken. Take the Dark Souls Painted World rip-off quest. You can get the Scythe of Sin as the reward. This thing can "kill a greatly sinful beast in one strike". Thats really, really, really overpowered and unclear. (Ill get into the unclearness more later though.)

This allows you to take almost any patron on, and to then kill them with any effort/preparation at all.

Firstly, The Ultimate Monstrosity. He will probably die from looking at the Scythe. Secondly, you have The Chaos. Thirdly, you have The Doll. These three patrons are objectively too sinful too have any hope of survival. The only reason I don't include the A.I. is because of the nature of his body. The Dark One isnt included here either, because it seems like he is supoossed to be evil "but not really lul".

Then, you have The Lord of Woes. Practically, the Scythe, if it can kill anybody, should kill him. He has literally genocided an entire universe. However, it seems like this CYOA is fond of "unstoppable force meets even more unstoppable force", which is admittedly coolish, but it isnt laid out exactly enough for someone to be able to accurately choose an adventure. It is more of an "imagine a possible adventure". The reader has to create a lot of the rules, because they are not defined clearly enough.

I forgot to write about the Other, but it fits here with the Conquering King and the Angel. They are obviously indirect evil, with the other destroying all human aspects of creatures, for example

The Conquering King is a wierd one. He reads like an Imperialist Fanfic. "The Great Wise Monarchy (which totally works) used its great wiseness to be good and democratic, and when it succeeds everything will be great and good, and any wars are because the people are bad". It literally reads like a 16th century British peasant's fanatical reimagining of the empire. Furthermore, he is trying to reinstate the Old Law, which it feels like the author changed halfway through.

Speaking of the Old Law, lets get the Prime Angel out of the way. This is an "obviously sinful but not" as well. The Old Law in the tablets is described as a strange collection of ultra-authoritarian policies with ridiculous implications. This is because Angels are apparently incapable of creativity. Thusly, they have made a system of laws that apparently punishes incorrect sitting and smiling, for example. Anyone who champions a system that punishes incorrect sitting and smiling is obviously a terribly sinful person. Especially on the universal scale, I mean we are talking about subjecting Earth's worth of people to these terribly destructive lifestyles. Because of this, the "pure" Patron is one of the evil ones, but can an Angel even sin? They obviously have commited evil acts, but do these always count as sins? Is sin determined by the wielder of the scythe? The dead God? The person being attacked? Popular opinion? Can sin be forgiven?Currently, it seems like the Scythe would be able to kill almost every single Patron!

Like I said, this CYOA needs more solid rules and definitions. There is too much to wonder about. The sin, old laws, power, etc…. all need to be more clearly defined, and some of it would benefit from a real imagining of purpose. You need to have a real, citable reason for why things are exactly the way they are. Something that anybody could look at and logically follow your placement of it. Everything I have listed so far doesnt mean that, so a lot of the CYOA is very random. That isnt to say I dont like this CYOA though. It is very cool, with lots of interesting choices and ideas. It is just that they dont fit together into a cohesive adventure.

Now, for the powers. A lot of them are fun, but some of them are simply too strong. If you take all tiers of speed, stealth, toughness, endurance, immunity, destroyer, and muscle mass, you would be almost impossible to defeat. With all tiers of mentality, you would be stronger than anything that could possibly exist. If you take coordination, vampirism, density control, and sixth sense, I cant imagine how you would lose. Nothing seems powerful enough to stop you. Honestly, the only thing I could even think of nearly as good as these are three tiers of senses. Maybe flight? I guess you could take two tiers of IM and kill all the incarnates in the first three minutes?( I'm guessing you can't lock onto them.) Any incarnate will fall before you like ash in a hurricane. You could run around at the speed of a bullet forever, decimating everything with your combat mastery and practical inability to die. If that SOMEHOW didnt work, the stealth is simply too good. With three minutes of stealth, moving at the speed of the average bullet would allow you to cover 450,000 feet or 85.23 miles. Someone could literally have the ability to instantly kill you by looking at you, and you would be able to defeat them as long as you werent farther than 85.23 miles away. There is practically no possible situatiom where you dont succeed with this selection of powers. Only a "You but stronger" or someone who has a special quirk could beat you. Anyone whou could beat these powers would be so unfathomably dangerous the only viable build would be to grovel at their feet. I guess you could get three tiers of charisma then.

Alright, Im done now. Cool cyoa. I hope my autistic rambling helps you somehow

>in an infinite set of universes, there is actually no real reason to expect them to be different, especialy radically so

Any given two universes no. Among an infinite set of universes everything that can exist must exist an infinite number of times, so those "radical differences", as long as they are within the realm of possibility, aren't just probably, they are guaranteed.

There's a newer version with lots of fixes (unless you were talking about it but didn't link it for some reason) here >>12478.

>There are way too many companions, and they are uninteresting

While I did find half the companions uninteresting, I found the other half at least mildly stimulating. Besides, you need chaff to help the good ones shine, and you can't really account for everyone's tastes.

>You are leaning too heavily on the "infinite universes, infinite possibilities!!!"

See >>12500

>there are two many quests, and none of them feel meaningful

I kinda agree here. Thus, my build incorporated the quests into my chosen companions' backstories, which made for a much more fun story.

>The Conquering King is a wierd one. He reads like an Imperialist Fanfic

Probably because he is? None of the patrons are stated to be the "correct" option. It's up to you to choose the ones you prefer, and either ignore their drawbacks or account for them in your build.

>Anyone who champions a system that punishes incorrect sitting and smiling is obviously a terribly sinful person

What if it's the only system that can ensure a less than genocidal state of the universe?

>Is sin determined by the wielder of the scythe? The dead God?

My guess is it's determined by the maker of the scythe. If the maker believed murder was okay, tough luck. If he's not stated, it's up to you to headcanon them and their morals.

>this CYOA needs more solid rules and definitions

I agree, but then it'd turn into a GURPS-like nightmare. It's best to leave it to the player's rule of cool, and let other anons try to keep them in check.

>If you take all tiers of speed, stealth, toughness, endurance, immunity, destroyer, and muscle mass, you would be almost impossible to defeat

Until an incarnate who killed a few more incarnates than you comes along. Or Hayden.

You are certainly right, but the issue is precisely in the "can exist". I think that authors absolutely decimate any reasonable amount of "can exist", and do not create a world capable of explaining weird phenomenon.

>>12508

That post is correct, but it doesnt justify the design decisions in the CYOA. You, as the author, are completely and utterly capable of crafting a world suited to explain anything you could explain, and instead you lean on the infinite worlds idea. Yes, absolutely, any number of worlds can exist and they can all be different, but fundamentally they must function with a logic. Without a logic, there is no point to the story, as there is nothing to understand. You could not, for example, have a universe that is God. That would ruin your story about God killing himself. You could not have a universe that destroys all other universes instantly. The list can go on and on. Just because you can have infinite universes, and thusly can have a universe with any possible set of outcomes, does not mean they could actually exist due to the laws of your multiverse. For example, we could imagine a multiverse that generates an infinite number of identical universes. A multiverse that generates a new universe for every possible outcome, etc… We could imagine a multiverse that creates a universe, destroys the universe, and goes so forth infinitely….

The important thing is that you, as the author, need to decide on a structure for your multiverse that makes sense, or you have impossible situations.

Again, I want to reiterate that I like the ideas in this CYOA, they are just not resolved with eachother.

>the companions

The companions are strange and nonsensical. The only connecting theme for them is their randomness. Absolutely meaningless, they do not flesh out the world or create meaningful choices. Any companion you pick is just as interesting as the rest, because there is literally no defining feature for any of them outside of their randomness. They are all chaff, even if some of them are particularly sparkly chaff. This isnt about taste as it is about objective. If the author was intending to make meaningful characters to accompany the player on their adventure/flesh out the world, they did not succeed with this, outside of demonstrating strength and variety, which was done successfully with the prior sections of the CYOA anyways. If any of the companions would stay, it could be the gold ones perhaps.

>Probably because he is? None of the patrons are stated to be the "correct" option

Its just silly to have these masturbatory ideas in the CYOA. None of this is about correctness, because the patrons are quite clearly painted with a very good/bad brush. There is literally a character called "The Ultimate Monstrosity". And, really, it doesnt make sense with the whole infinite worlds idea. There should be somebody considerably stronger than all of the patrons, and someone who speaks death everytime he jostles his pinky finger. The "le infinite worlds" theme HAS to be constrained or you end up with an absolute impossibilty at every turn. This just shows up in the Patrons, where a clearly idealised version of a historically, logically proven failure can be drawn up to "Well some people like it". It doesnt have to make sense, because it doesnt make sense. It isnt a quality baseline to work with.

>what if it is the only system that can keep the universe together

Just no. It is such a silly idea. Improper smiling will cause genocide. If you have any freedom, genocide. Again, the infinite worlds shittery comes up. Really, ANY logic works because there is NO logical way to fit everything together. Every single good idea in this CYOA is just floating in a sea of technical potholes because of the setting.

>rules will turn it into GURPS

Or the author could constrain the infinite universe, instituting a cohesive narrative like basically every single other author ever in the history of time has done.

>incarnate powerlevel

It is never clarified how the power system works. With these abilities, you have the strongest set of abilities to be chosen. You should be able to kill all the incarnates with this, and it definitely gives the best odds with any realistic defining. Speed is OP.

>authors absolutely decimate any reasonable amount of "can exist", and do not create a world capable of explaining weird phenomenon.

In cases of "atoms are made of corn cobs", yes, I agree. In cases of "Nazis won the war and established a utopia", not so much.

>You, as the author

I hope you're talking in general, as I'm not the author. I just posted the update since this thread's version is very much out of date.

>The important thing is that you, as the author, need to decide on a structure for your multiverse that makes sense, or you have impossible situations

How does "a universe where the Nazis won", "a universe where the communists won", or "a universe where you had a son who was an incarnate" sound like an impossible situation? Did I miss some of those bizzare universes you keep speaking of?

>The companions are strange and nonsensical

Only a few…

>they do not flesh out the world or create meaningful choices

Are we playing the same cyoa?

>There should be somebody considerably stronger than all of the patrons

If they do, they haven't shown themselves for a reason. Sometimes you need to take stock of "what is" before you consider "what could be". What is: These guys are the most powerful in the known 'verse. What could be: More powerful guys exist, but haven't shown themselves for some reason.

I still can't see where you get the idea that the author is drawing up rando nonsensical characters. Care to give me examples?

>Just no. It is such a silly idea. Improper smiling will cause genocide

I was partly joking. I just wanted to point out that just as the world of absolutes "follow all my laws or die" is nonsensical, so too is the world of "anyone who champions this system is a terribly sinful person". Sometimes you need to put up with the pitfalls of a system, otherwise you risk subjecting the world to your own subjective morality with dangerous self-assurance that you are more right than your peers.

>It is never clarified how the power system works

That is a problem with the cyoa, I'll give you that.

And there are a great many counters to any powerset you can think of. Hayden makes a living out of taking down incarnates, and he's just a baseline human.

* All my armies can instantly teleport to and from anywhere and anytime using the replicated Orbus Portal Tech.

I control Tyranids, Spacemarines Tau and Eldar, Psykers and Orks, and a Chaos God.

2- Send some of my Legion-Army to several uninhabited planets and asteroid fields to mine them barren.

3- Use Alchemist3 to continuously generate extremely rare materials.

4- Use my Mobile Planetoid Station as a factory staffed by the rest of my Legion-Army, with more followers coming each day.

5- Spend the next decade or so passively building a grand army consisting of every vehicle, ship and weapon on the catalog, from hypergiant ships, to tanks, to titan mechs, to nukes, to robots…etc.

6- ???

7- Profit. Hiring myself out, selling my easily built but expensive nonetheless products, actually engaging in warfare of my own accord, or any mix of the previous. AI will be a piece of cake.

I hope the author didn't declare this as final because it introduces quite a few mistakes. It refers to companions like typhon in places even though they don't exist anymore. Some of the changes to companions don't make sense: Christina is now Cassandra and super religious but that doesn't make sense because it's made out like she doesn't want to become an incarnate? Even though she thinks they're angels of God now? The cute PI is now some annoying eceleb attention whore, but her character description still says she's 'antisocial'. Being an internet personality is pretty much the opposite of antisocial. And why are the President and commie companions gone? I thought those were pretty well done. A lot of the new images are downgrades too, and I didn't mention it before but every one of the images seem to be stretched out sideways for some reason. That should probably be fixed. And I got the idea that there would eventually be a unique quest added for every patron, given the last few quests are uniques. Could use more support companions too, I think there's only 2 that aren't spirit gift restricted.
