The best part to me is giving Google a big fuck you, by using their hardware without any of their telemetry baked in.

I'm looking for an android smartphone OS that is easy to customize, secure, and will allow me to use common apps. I used to use Replicant, because it was pretty easy, but it doesn't seem to be updated for phones from the last few years.
Anyone have some ideas?

I think using smartphones is not really cyber at all. I mean sure it's a handy gadget with maps and shit, but I stick to my nokia. If you buy high tech without being able to change parts like the battery that is completely worn down after 3-4 years, you really are a low life. ^^

i think both approaches are valid.
i ran a burner phone for a while.
but having high tech in your pocket if its private and secure is sick.

postmarketOS is trash, Maemo Leste > pmOS. The N900 is ridiculously /cyber/ though, I agree.
