>“Ultimately we can do a full brain machine interface,” Musk said in an announcement that was widely livestreamed. “This is going to sound pretty weird. Ultimately we can achieve a symbiosis with artificial intelligence

>In essence, the device consists of a large number of “threads” (incredibly thin wires with a handful of electrodes on the end of them) which are inserted into the brain in places where they will be able to pick up the electrical signals from individual neurons, a system-on-a-chip that receives and interprets all the data from the threads, and a “pod” worn behind the ear that then relays the data via Bluetooth to a phone or other device running the actual software that uses the neural data

>For those first human clinical trials, which Musk claims will be underway by the end of 2020, Neuralink will be attempting to use its device to allow quadriplegics to control a computer

Finally we're getting the technology part of cyberpunk

Just think of the possibilities.

The chip can read and write in the brain, it can insert images to your vision cortex, touch feelings to your skin, sounds to your ears.

>literally enabling real sex with anime traps

His physiologist(?) even said you can make the user feel pain.

Imagine governments using it to control your actions.

Cyberpunk chinese full orwellian dictatorship shit will be a thing soon

First I thought of the schway things that could be done and then I thought that something along these lines.

It could be pretty fucking amazing or it could be used as another means of control.

Interesting never the less.

Yea, it would become even simpler to program a person. Read /and/ write capabilities. Agh, I just don't want to think about this.

So what's the chance this tech will be open source?

GPL neuralink when?

Never.

BUY Neuralink AND LET US SELL YOUR BRAIN PATTERNS TO ADVERTISERS AND CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS TO BE IN-LINE WITH THE CURRENT POLITICAL ESTABLISHMENT.

This may seem too optimistic but hear me out.

I doubt anyone working for Musk is so fucked in the head that they wouldn't see the possible implementations this tech could produce, there has to be at least one person scratching their head and saying "this could potentially be abused out the wazoo". Bearing on this I hope that the tech will someday be released open source or leaked or picked up by another company that is freedom minded.

We will see. Hope for the best and plan for the worst.

I noticed that none of the people on stage, Elon especially, have one installed themselves yet. As others pointed out, the potential for both great uses and nightmare fuel is immense. I just wish I could trust it to be the former that happens. I'll be more open to consider the device once they test it like Dr Jekyll, forget FDA approval and just try it on their own bodies.

Also, the point about it being wireless was stressed a lot, I always wanted a wire though. It looks and feels more cyber to have that physical connection. Having the hair shaved away at the side and a ribbon cable dangling like electrohairs or something like that. Still, if we can get fully interactive waifu simulation that might be worth it.

I want a wire because it means that someone that'd want to hack the implant would have to get physical access rather than just walking a hundred meters away. Wireless on implants with write capability to the brain is a terrible, terrible idea.

I'm gonna guess it is because it's still in an early phase. There is no point in implanting such a primitive device yet inside the brain, unless you really, really need it (read: you have a crippling disability, and such a thing may actually improve your life, rather than being a mere curiosity). Brain surgery is dangerous, even with medtech devices straight out of Cyberpunk 2020, and replacing "obsolete" devices implanted in there even more. If anyone sane if you can even be considered sane if you want one of those inside your head wants a brain implant, they will wait until we are sure it won't make any big technological leaps. As someone once said about implants, "some people get it earlier, some people get it better".

I still doubt any of the people working there will ever want to get augmented, if they know what the device is capable of.

>Also, the point about it being wireless was stressed a lot, I always wanted a wire though. It looks and feels more cyber to have that physical connection. Having the hair shaved away at the side and a ribbon cable dangling like electrohairs or something like that.

I'm gonna guess it's because we still have no idea how to properly interface skin with synthetic components. For all we know, the areas surrounding your jacks or cables could get infected. That said, I imagine something like a cochlear implant could work, where the communication between the internal device and the external one is done via an NFC-like technology, and the external implant is easily removable because it is attached with magnets to the internal one. But I guess that pussy Musk must have thought wires were unncool. Can't wait to pretend to be one of those deaf-mutes.

While an NFC BCI sounds schway, it doesn't resolve the issues surrounding the security of the device. There is nothing stopping you getting a big ass directional antenna and accessing the device at a distance.

Elon's about as anti-AI as they come. Him not wearing one is simply because the technology isn't ready yet, but you can be sure he'd do it if it meant safeguarding against the AI menace.
