Thanks for linking and archiving. I enjoyed that read. I think we've all fantasized about disappearing, going off the grid and starting anew at least once.

Almost every time I'm on the highway, I think about what would happen if I just ignored my exit and kept going.
There's a certain appeal in the idea of shedding all of one's personal possessions save for the bare essentials and just driving away. It's easy to feel trapped by the stuff you own and the relationships you form with other people. Modern life doesn't really give you many opportunities to reinvent yourself.

>they’re driven underground by a profound sense of shame
Can relate, tho tbh reading that I expected something like the fixer from breaking bad that gets you new IDs and everything, all this people do is take off and they can do that because japan is the only country I know that respects privacy so much.

I was surprised to read this in OP's article, because I had incorrectly assumed that a very modern, technology-driven country would be on their A-game for tracking citizens.
Nice to know there is somewhere that isn't smaller European countries that still respect privacy.

It's actually refreshing given how hardcore China goes at it. I think it's safe to say citizens of each of those countries are going to be living drastically different lives in 10 to 20 years.

It'd be nice to have a service that you pay to actively remove all traces of you from the internet because people would still discuss your disappearance online. Sounds like the people who help them evaporate in this article just help them enter System D unnoticeably. Something you could probably do on your own.

Unfortunately the Internet never really forgets, doubly so when the Internet as a whole is explicitly told to forget something.
Still, very /cyber/ to think of elite hackers having breached every major service on the low down, and have that capability… for a cost.

Haven't read it in forever, but it's been floating in the back of my mind recently. I remember it being pretty good, but human memory is known for being unreliable at best.
F2F, by Phillip Finch
> The Verba Interchange is an electronic bulletin board, a virtual meeting place where anyone with a computer and a modem can exchange views, flirt, or argue with complete anonymity. But an ingenious serial killer is using the vast potential of the Net to choose victims for a deadly f2f - a face-to-face meeting.
Related - why can't Tor users upload images to this board? Spammers, I guess? Was going to attach the cover.
