Hoi, chummers. I've been thinkin about decks a lot lately, and seen some neat shit on people making their own. What methods would you all use to cobble something together, and to what end? What kind of function would you be looking for in a modern cyberdeck? How would you make it look schway as fuck?

I did some mockups in OpenSCAD, and I think it should be possible to fit a slim Mini-ITX motherboard in Amiga500 sized case, with full sized keyboard and enough space left for one or two half-length PCIe and one 3.5″ bay expansions.
It would be bulky and not very portable, but it should have power and modularity of a good midrange desktop PC.
I don't know how to do cooling and supply power and I had to a lot of guess work for volume dimensions of components though, so I do expect some issues to pop up.
I suppose there's no substitute for actually holding physical objects in your hands, so next step should be building a cardboard prototype, but I'll have to acquire Mini-ITX board somewhere first.

You see that usb-hub to the right? C-128 and A-500 have numpad there.
C-64C was late rerelease of C-64 in a fashionable C-128/A-500 like case, and it had C-64's F-keys in that place, picrelated.

i just want to put a strap on my laptop so i can use it while walking around or at least without pulling it out of my bag.
does that count?
>kind of function would you be looking for in a modern cyberdeck?
i want the same function as a normal computer.
What else would it have?

Definitely keep the keyboard. It'd be awesome if the tape could be used with emulators … but, yeah, definitely switch out the boards with a modern SB computer.

Hey, I can really see that working. You could put the screen where the tape recorder is and rewire the buttons and slip a raspberry pi in and have a pretty decent deck. If only I knew how to get custom screens that small (and how to wire things that aren't TVs in general)

You're never going to punch deck like Case with that attitude. If you've got a box like that you could put a lot more power in it than a raspberry pi.

I can't believe someone fucking made those jeans. What an abortion.
I think we're just waiting for eye/hand tracking to get here. Once we have simple production interfaces that scan your hand position and eye position, and draw an interactive interface over them, that you use with gestures, we'll be there.
I've seen some great stuff still in the alpha stages, but here in a few years we won't have cell phones at all. We'll have a little sci-fi monocle, or (eventually) just a contact in one eye, or even an implant.

As opposed to holding a phone in one hand, and using the other one to touch the screen? I seem to manage that for 18 hours a day wiithout any major problems.
I also assume I'd be able to set a virtual keyboard on a table and just use the table as an input device, where it's still tracking my hands, I'm just resting it on a flat surface.
I'm damn sure not wearing fucking pants with a shitty keyboard sewn into them.

If we're talking about the future of consumer technology, I think it's probably some unobtrusive wearable. You probably won't even notice it's there, and it'll just overlay with your vision, and allow you to interact by brushing a thumb against your forefinger or something really subtle like that.
As for anything 'cyberpunk', I think makers will make something ridiculous, loud and obvious. Just to give the finger to people who think buying the sleekest, smallest, most sandboxed and controlled thing on the market makes them cool.

Thinking about gutting a thinkpad for the computer of my deck, using ABS plastic paneling and angled aluminum (like for drywall) to build a case for it, a RP3, a USB hub and multiple IC programming cables for messing with other embedded electronics, as well as doing a few other mods to the Thinkpad itself
> Removing chink battery and building my own cell array to be part of the deck and power it, the screen, and a small RP3 powered display for temp/CPU/RAM/Battery use.
> The cell array should also have multiple DC outs regulated for embedded work, as well as small modules wanting to attach later on (Cellular Modules? GPS? Radio? Extra cooling?)
For me personally, it can be up to 7-8 pounds and I'm going to make sure the case is tough, well-vented. Any recommendations for modules for it, materials to build the case out of, and/or thoughts?

I literally came to this thread to say that pre-chiclet thinkpads would be an easy way to start a cyberdeck fun-project with. Half of what you plan to build could be bypassed by just using an ultrabay with it though.

My thing though is what separates a laptop from a cyberdeck and /cyber/'s thoughts.
I figure a 'deck is not only capable of doing security stuff through web protocol (like everything capable of connecting to the web at a decent speed), but also capable of doing embedded-level hacking/programming and RF package transmission stuff, otherwise it's just a laptop case-mod, not a cyberdeck.
I've had a few thoughts and purchased a thinkpad, so I guess I'm gunna get the ball rolling when it arrives in the next few days (X230 w/ 2.9 Ghz process.)
>18650 cells w/ multiple charging circuits for power, fed into the laptop via power port (possibly messing with internal power supply for a more efficient feed?)
>TFT screens via microcontrollers for monitoring this shit while running/idle
>Quiet running, slightly larger fans and additional heatsink w/ temperature sensors
>Module slots - 3
They are 3" x 3" x 1.5" slots with separate power regulators and USB connection via Hub
> RF Module
> Embedded Programming Module
> Embedded Diagnostic Module (?)
> EEG/Brainwave Module
I also want to do some embedded work with homebrewing an EEG module for attaching electrodes to my temples and actually getting a decent reading of my brain activity out of it, and I'm apparently not the only one who has thought of something similar.
http://openeeg.sourceforge.net/doc/
Chummers, now how fucking schway would it be to actually have a cyberdeck reading your mind?
I'm willing to put in the work…

Any laptop with a USB port is capable of doing that stuff. It's still just a laptop case-mod.
The only argument I've heard for the 'use' of a Cyberdeck is that if you use goggles, it's a little more private.

Well, I guess in your opinion, without Matrix, no cyberdecks, ever, simply by definition.
But that simply inspires me to do more, chummers.
So, what if I started attempting to develop a module to house an OpenEEG, 2-4 electrode leads, and some kind of embedded interpreter to translate EEG feeds to commands?
They are developing similar with BrainServer on the OpenEEG site, so it wouldn't be entirely reinventing the wheel here…
And nothing really complex in the way of commands, I'd have to go full-retard and install electrodes in my skull for anything more than simple shit with concentration. (I've messed with EEGs before, worked in the medical field)
Erm, I also have epilepsy and would use it to study my own brain during seizure activity, possibly to help figure out why my brain is fried.
And it'd look schway?
> shave side of head, have cyberdeck on a sling with an electrode or two on your temple, connecting you to the Deck, and from there the Net
> can get away with carrying it anywhere by calling it 'Medical Equipment', and has several actual medical functions
> can possibly 'think' to kick several functions off/on

Yeah cyber decks are not going to take off. Its a horrifically impractical form factor for needs virtually no one has - "I need to walk around while being on my laptop". If you need to work, you sit down. It has fundamentally misuses the shrinking on electronics, and the ubiquity of network connectivty. Whats the point of having a cyber deck? what could you possibly do with it?

It just ships with Android installed, but you can also install Debian or Sailfish with their flashing tool. The hardware/driver situation is pretty bad. Only Android has proper support. They're using workarounds to reuse Android drivers in Debian and Sailfish. It's stuck on an ancient kernel and things don't work very well. It's a Mediatek chip, which has infamously bad support on GNU/Linux. Somehow I wasn't aware of how bad things would be, and I actually ended up buying one. The keyboard layout is also kind of crappy. They push some normal keys like minus and equals into the fn layers, but then have dedicated arrow keys. They should've just copied the layout of a modern 60% mechanical keyboard so that everything would be in a standard space at least. I'm hoping the GNU/Linux support will improve over time, but that might require full on reverse engineering, and I don't know if people care about the device enough. It might be better to just wait on something like the Pyra or Neo900.

Something I have that is pretty neat is the "Avegant Glyph" which is a personal display you connect with HDMI. Its 720p, accept it doesn't have much of a screen door effect because its a retinal display, which uses projectors.
It has problems, like static and dark red pixels that appear in blackness on some devices (which kind of adds to the appeal and isnt too annoying). I added a Bluetooth dongle for the 3.5mm headphone jack for listening with the display tilted up.

Cyberdecks were a thing in the 80's, when portable computer weren't a thing yet. Now we have smartphones, laptops, smartwatches, even connected cars. Everything is more and more connected to the internet, those every day objects all communicate between them via bluetooth, Wi-Fi … That is the real Matrix.
I have the feeling we're romanticising a lot 80's SF without taking into account current tech, which exceed or differ a quite bit from Neuromancer, or any Cyperpunk fiction from that period.
I get that there's a bit of nerdiness involved, not that larping is inherently bad, we're on /cyber/, after all lol.
To get back to the point, we're looking to build a practical portable hacking device, with a DIY aspect.
We now have the possibility to build extremely small computers hardware-wise.
It's relatively easy to strap a raspberry Pi or whatever micro-computer to a miniature screen and keyboard. Retinal displays or goggles would be cool, too.
Need more power ? Pretty much any modern laptop or rooted smartphone would do the job.
If you want to go DIY, it's still possible to build your own laptop with desktop parts, which is kinda the point of cyberdecks, only less bulky.
Software wise, I think we can all agree on a custom linux distro, maybe on a flashdrive for maximum discretion and modularity.
Well, sorry for this half-baked, autistic post, probably with a few English mistakes, just bringing my grain of salt pn the subject

As much as I hate to admit it, but smartphones and tablets are probably the modern equivalent to cyberdecks. Or a RaspberryPi in your backpack with some additional hardware like an Alfa card that you control via your phone. Extremely portable, covert and you're pretty much independet in the sense that you just need a powerbank and maybe a solarcharger for your powerbank. With this you can charge your RaspberryPi, tablet and smartphone. You could then rent a cheap VPS if you need raw computing power or storage. With a setup like this you're pretty flexible and you don't look like a larping autist.
https://pwnagotchi.ai/installation/
Maybe this is something you guys like, doesn't really have anything to do with cyberdecks though.
