Who's ready for another continuation of a show that ran out of steam two seasons ago?

An effective reboot is more or less the only way to do more with Bojack now that he has a sister. He's made peace with his mother, doesn't seem to be as bitter about his work in Hollywood, and now has someone beyond himself to look after (Hollyhock). Let alone how his companions have all drifted away from him (especially Todd, who's forced tumblrization and Looney Toons antics show there isn't really a place for him anymore).

Hopefully the reboot gets rid of Todd, he's pretty unnecessary as a character.

This TBH.

Season 2 would've been a great point to end since instead of all this >>997643 happening BoJack learned to be satisfied with what he had and as >>997648 said it ended with BoJack taking Todd with him, demonstrating that he was important to him.

I always thought the season 3 premiere was such a mood whiplash to keep the status quo one more season.

They started to get into some annoying political stuff in season 4. Mostly weird shit about how feminists are right to hate the world because their ideology is 100% fact-based in Bojack. California hates women more than it loves guns, or to a lesser degree the "lemons are a girl's snack" weirdness. I had to look up where the lemons things must be coming from and it turns out candied lemons were actually a thing, for people who liked sour/sweet treats. My guess is that candied lemons didn't stain a dress like chocolate ice cream will, and given the times that's a big deal so somebody somewhere heard that girls were discouraged from ice cream. I don't know for sure though - none of life is fucking sensical when viewed through an ideologue's lens. Then there was the fracking thing, which was outdated in the year it came out since the price of oil fell and made the practice less profitable. Also the fire from the faucet thing was a hoax - the real environment concern has to do with industrial runoff contaminating ground water with carcinogens. Methane in your water is more likely to be from a bacterial infection caused by shoddy well design. It led into the Lord of the Flies thing, so that was okay, but still concerning because they brought up real world issues and then didn't get anything straight about it.

I'm not saying the show is ruined, but if season 5 winds up being about establishing more of an ideologue's world paradigms, and less about the earthen, human, character conflicts I enjoy, I'm going to say the show has lost its vision and has officially overstayed its welcome.

I'd like it if Bojack did develop into a decently happy and adjusted person, and then had to struggle to hold onto that as he realized that everyone else in Hollywoo is as fucked up as he used to be.

Less Todd and more Princess Caroline would be good too.

Bojack having "developed slightly past being a complete miserable sad sack" would be grounds to end the show since the core revolved around his turmoil. With his defining turmoil being that from his family (made peace with his mother, has a sister now), life in Hollywood (doesn't seem as bitter about his work now), past mistakes (all adressed). There's nothing more to tell with him without more or less a reset. Having Todd act like a Loony Toon (among other things) shows the writers have to distract you with forced asides.

The series could find another two seasons if they actually turn the nihilism on its head for Bojack. Suddenly having this character with a positive outlook on life and being genuinely happy having to turn around and help the people closest to them as they spiral off into depressions. The goal would be to demonstrate that Bojack has become a genuinely nice person before something from his past is brought back and ends him.

Though I don't expect that. It will probably just lean more political next season with some thinly veiled catalyst for the character regressing like all these shows tend to have.

>Not only did one episode had Diane hound some Bill Cosby stand-in with the episode painting her as in the right

And?

>but another one had the punchline be that America hates women more than it wants guns.

You got that one. But I also remember them portraying the anti-gun arguments just as retarded as the pro gun arguments.

>Let alone the pro-abortion episode that framed opposition to abortion as just mean old White men.

It also framed the pro-abortion crowd as appearance obsessed retards who mostly wanted it to be a trend so people wouldn't feel embarrassed about getting one, and portrayed it so extremely that Diane, the resident retard lefty was confused and unsure if it was a good thing, and ended ambiguously.

The show isn't really about politics though. The characters certainly have them which is what makes them realistic. It's not perfect of course, but it portrays hollywood life, specifically a bunch of people who are searching for meaning, who are your typical rich types who have too much money, too much time, and too much introspection, who used to believe in something but never really cared enough about it to actually do something about it.

It essentially devalues the hollywood lifestyle so many progressive types and leftists idealize and even live, showing them for what they are, incredibly flawed people who are trying to fill their life with causes and meaning because their life is so filled with things that they're unable to properly comprehend basic human concepts like loyalty or love or compassion.

Even better it shows the future of those types. You have Bojack, a definite old-guard hollywood type whose career is mostly over, who is struggling to stay in the spotlight, and he's tired, out of shape, depressed, and hates himself and is definitely on a self destructive path, and then you have Diane, who is a popular book writer and blogger who represents everything about the new age of media, and yet she's falling into the exact same traps Bojack is.

If the writers are self aware or not, I have no idea, but the percievable theme of the show is that seeking only to improve people's opinions of you for purely vain and selfish reasons inevitably leads to self hatred and self destruction, while people who find happiness in self improvement, who try to be genuinely good people not for themselves, but because it's the right thing to do, like Mr. Peanut Butter or Charlotte, that they will obtain happiness.

I mean, it's pretty hard to ignore the contrast the show has between Bojack and Diane. Bojack has the tragic past and Diane has none of that, yet Diane is going down the path that leads her to become just like Bojack was at the beginning of the show, while Bojack slowly gets himself out of his funk and realizes that being a celebrity and having other people love you isn't the end all and be all of life.

Anyone who defends the last season is making excuses for poor writing. It did nothing but create artificial drama that was already visited in prior seasons, yet the writers act like his opioid addiction is some kind of massive revelation compared to his crippling alcoholism and the deeper examination of his childhood. This show is officially dead and people need to stop pretending that more seasons are good.

"The story and characters don't have to progress because, like, life is just like that, maaan" only fetishizes sadness in the same way that the writers condemned in the earlier seasons. At best, if that was the writers' intention, then it only sabotages and undercuts the larger message of introspection and slow, painful self-improvement. This season introduced nothing novel or new except for the head writers to flagellate themselves just because Weinstein and a bunch of assholes also liked the show. The most mind-blowing fucking part was when Diane was worried that her TV show was going to destroy America just because it had a shitty protagonist. It's the same kind of delusional Hollywood writers' narcissism that believes that creating an Oscar-bait film is going to solve all the problems of this country. This season wasn't about creating a meaningful story that you can draw meaning from. This is the season where the writers finally gave up on putting in effort and tried to tell you how to feel. It was the worst season yet.

tl;dr people use circular logic to defend the lack of development in the show that they would never apply to any other show because the sad horse is similar to them in some ways.

Season 4 episode 2 scarred my soul and turned me off the show forever. I know the intent was to make me hate the 1950's, but it just made me think of how twisted and full of viciousness the minds that produce this shit must be.

They're projecting their whole sickness as an image of the past. I now fully believe than media can, in and of itself, contain evil.

The thing I hate the most about this show is it trivializes depression and everyone who watches it thinks its some like funny ironic cool thing to be depressed.

Most people who think they have depression are just mildy unhappy with their life choices. More importantly, they're usually just in a depressing situation and unaware that their environment is giving them all of this anxiety and sadness. STEM majors.

Real depression is fucking being unable to move. Having shit to do that you want to do and being unable to just put the effort in ans fucking do it. It's not being "sad", everyone fucking gets sad, it's a part of life. It's not melodramatic with panic attacks or cutting or suicidal thoughts the last one is just par for the course in clown world. Actual depression fucking debilitates you. I was a smart kid, I skipped twk grades and you know what happened to me? Halfway through college I just fucking gave up. I was an academics GOD and when it hit me I couldn't even write a fucking 600 word essay twice a week. I failed everything, and then the failures just stopped hurting and I stopped feeling ashamed. You know that sense of dread you feel when you miss a deadline on something important, imagine if you never felt that again in your life. Sounds good, huh? You think that until you realize that for years the only thing moving you forward was your fear of failure.

You let all of this shit just slip away from you, and you try to explain this to somebody and they just think you're some lazy faggot because they think depression is just like a TV drama.

If you can still reliably get up in the goddamn morning and go to work, go to school, or do whatever chores you have to do, you're not goddam depressed in my book. You may be stressed, or sad, or whatever, but you aren't depressed. You're still a functional human being, you aren't broken yet. So just shut the fuck up and get back to work, because I won't.

Diane's problems are easy to understand. It's just her constant over reactions to minor inconveniences & situations that are her own fault are what made her insufferable.

Y'know in the end she doesn't deal with it. She just kind of lives on anti depressants & writing a book she doesn't care about but finds fun because she doesn't have to look at herself. She did not grow as a character. Even Todd had development. Mr. Peanut Butter… ehhh kind of.

One thing I both love & hate is the episode of Bojack going through a near death experience. I like how it's all in his head & allowed for all sorts of bizarre visual performances. What complicates how I feel about it is Bojack's mind version of Herb just saying "there's no other side this is it". Which is really really fucking depressive. But since it's in his head I guess you could say it's just Bojack's own negative mind telling him even death isn't an escape. That he's just gone rather than in heaven or even punished. I like that it made me feel something.

Mr Peanutbutters development was kinda frontloaded at the end but Id say his arc across all 6 seasons was complete. In case of Dianne its kind of a meh resolution but it its a realistic one at least, some people have to go on meds to be functional. She had plenty character development across the series where she learned to be more self aware and less petty as a result, just not in the last season.

I liked the cunt producer getting a a bit fleshed out, but Holly cutting Bojack out was unnessesary both from a logical and from a writing standpoint, him getting pushed over the edge by the realization that he could have prevented Sarah Lynns death should have been enough. Bojack as a colledge professor was wholesome as fuck.

Also that entire thing with Judah and Princess Carolyn was seriously phoned in. It makes total sense that the 2 workaholics find each other but there was literally no lead up whatsoever.

I think what it comes down to is that everything felt rushed in this final season. Which is really bad considering they split it into two parts. It's like they didn't have the forethought on how to wrap up everything. So really they just didn't. Diane & PB develop but don't really tackle the root of their problems being themselves or get enough time being retrospective enough about it. Bojack just gets completely sandbagged into total relapse because of Hollyhock abandoning him. Which I think is really out of character. After all the things they went through together you'd think she'd be more accepting of Bojack's flaws & his desire to change. But she just turns on him like everyone else. I hated that but I kind of like how they kept what was on the letter a mystery. We'll never know the whole truth even if we get the basic idea.

I agree that Judah & PC kind of just comes outta nowhere. They should've just remained close working friends. There wasn't a real chemistry beyond being workaholics. I'd rather there have been more focus on Todd's established romance, honestly. Like maybe he realizes that he isn't truly asexual & he just needed to find the right person to open up to sexually. Or just realizing that he wants a child of his own after taking care of so many kids. That'd be some reasonable development.

I honestly didn't mind last season too much, at least as far as Bojack went. Him trying to be a good guy and make some actual amends was the most wholesome thing the show has ever done. He had such a shit life with no love whatsoever from either parent and I'm surprised he hasn't just killed himself already. Which is why I'm reluctant to watch this new season. I'm afraid he'll revert or commit suicide.

I do agree the show could have trimmed the fat a bit, the entire 4th season for example was just filler that ended in status quo, it didnt have to exist. Same goes for Todds asexuality arc. Also Todd being resentful towards Bojack could have been cut down a lot, its out of character for Todd to hold such a grudge for such a long time.

I've found that any episode that focuses solely on Bojack is the show's greatest strength. Season 1 Telescope, Season 2 Let's Find Out (Personal favorite) and Escape from LA, Season 3 Fish out of Water, Stop Presses and last 3 episodes. Season 4 Sugarman Place and Time's Arrow are pretty good.

The bad parts of Bojack are two fold. First is the side characters, Todd became irrelevant after Season 3, PC has always been either decent foil for Bojack or taking up valuable screen-time and wasting character development time (Didn't change at all in S4), Mr Peanutbutter I kinda hate because he just does whatever he wants really with no real conquences. I know he says he needs people to like him because dog but the way he behaves just rubs me the wrong way. His best moment was to insult Bojack for getting a question about Secretariat wrong on his game show and MrPB works best as a rival for Bojack, not as a friend.

Diane is… complicated for me. She drifts in and out of relevance between seasons. I kind of like her struggling to be happy like Bojack but I don't like to quote Lynn "Asian Daria" and all the baggage that entails.

Second thing is definitely the politics and Season 4 is just chock full of it. Season 3 has the abortion episode that was just tasteless in my opinion and Thoughts and Prayers, episode 5, was just one giant burning Strawman where characters like Diane got to spout their worst points. People of course defend this by saying "Urgh, it's heavy-handed but it's reality." No, it's cherry-picking arguments and making hay-bales out of your opposition, see Sugarman place where "Lol Lobotomize" instead of sending her to a sanatorium.

Hollyhocks "dads" and Todd's sexuality are also story-lines that need to drop dead.

On the plus side, there are some supporting characters I actually like. People like Cuddlywhiskers, Officer Fuzzyface, Pinky Penguin are all good solid supporting. Even Sarah Lynn and what happened to her.

Overall, I still got 2 seasons left but S2 & S3 is my favorite and I think it's just downhill from here with the occasional Bojack only episode to pick the show from a "decent" to a "good."

I know I'm kinda late but better late than never

This, 5th season was holding pattern and 4th was just a mess, as the focus of the show, Bojack was shoved to the sidelines to give the others a go.

In the 6th season and the face of depression was a really good episode, Bojack doing small things like recommending the app to maude, who's a decent character and should of been introduced in S4 rather than 6, doing the cross-over episode with MrP and other stuff. The whole pickles cucking part of the first half is something his character really didn't need and you could see the writers grasping for straws to keep characters relevant.

E13 though, Horny Unicorn. Oh man… Fuck both Hollyhock and Todd. Holly for cutting Bojack out of her life and Todd for abandoning Bojack the one fucking time he actually needs it.

I didn't get angry at alot of things in this show but this makes me legitimate angry as he's portrayed as this vile person by the media, his "friends and family", the people who you think would look after a vulnerable guy out of rehab straight up cut him out of their lives till he relapses and will probably die. This whole "Nobody cares" Nihilism thing was strong with this episode and if Todd actually cared about Bojack and took a fucking minute to make sure he was sober instead of, you know, trying to appease his bitchof a mother that's not fucking relevant to the story at all, Bojack would be in a better position.

The way to describe this is you have the actors on stage acting as their characters, but there's person grudges between said actors so they don't look after the lead and the whole performance suffers.

Season 6 is the most relevant Bojack has been since S3.

And finished. Just kinda ended, which is fine I guess. Show was decent but dear god, did it get preachy.

I didn't like season 4 either. And I just didn't care for Bojack's mother's backstory (was that also 4?), because that didn't change the status quo. Just because she had a shitty life didn't make her a better person in the end. Todd's asexuality arc went nowhere, its like they tried something and failed.

Still, this show was relevant to me in a time where I just watch shit and don't care.

I think the preachiness was good advice though. If you can't relate to an issue though, it became annoying. Sure, I was depressed, and I couldn't get shit done (and still really can't) but I just couldn't relate to the whats-her-name author. She was an asshole to everyone and turned out to be weaker than Bojack, not looking for help. I don't hate her as a character, but I lack empathy in the end.

In the end, the most feel-good moments of the show to me were Princess Carolin's ending and the pic in your post. And the way the ending was handled. Doing nothing was the right decision.

I keep seeing people referring to the lobotomy thing not making sense but what people dont get, is that its a reference to Rosemary Kennedy being brained on behalf of her father. Gran Sugarmans whole story was there to explore that whole shitstorm. Its a dark as fuck spot in recent burger history that is rarely talked about.
