DC ANNOUNCES YET ANOTHER IMPRINT: BLACK LABEL

With mature stories for mature readers, by acclaimed creators.

http://archive.is/odi4r

>The success of Batman: White Knight, Dark Knight III: The Master Race and Nightwing: New World Order has demonstrated a readership for more adult-suitable stories using DC Comics characters. So while DC Zoom and DC Ink offer comics aimed at a child and young adult audience I get the word that something called DC Black Label will feature comics aimed at adults using familiar DC characters.

https://www.dccomics.com/blog/2018/03/08/dc-launches-new-publishing-imprint-dc-black-label

http://archive.is/Jtt96

>DC Black Label is an imprint designed to allow “an all-star lineup of creative teams” to “craft their own personal definitive DC stories.” According to DC’s official press release, the imprint is inspired by some of the publisher’s most successful prestige titles including Batman: The Killing Joke, The New Frontier, The Dark Knight Returns, and Watchmen.

>According to DC co-publisher Jim Lee, Black Label books, much like the predecessors that inspired the imprint, will be creator led, rather than continuity driven, takes on the DC universe. He said:

<Many of our perennially best-selling, critically acclaimed books were produced when we unleashed our top talent on standalone, often out-of-continuity projects featuring our most iconic characters…creating DC Black Label doubles down on our commitment to working with all-star talent and trusting them to tell epic, moving stories that only they can tell with the highest levels of creative freedom.”

>When thinking of DC Black Label, longtime fans might turn to DC’s “Earth One” graphic novels as a point of comparison. The Earth One comics, like Black Label’s future books, do away with the intricacies of the standard DC Universe continuity, choosing to focus on making their stories accessible to readers outside the direct market.

>Each of the Black Label books “will have a unique format and release schedule to best serve the story and creative vision.”

>This opens the door not only to standard single issues and OGNs under Black Label, but less standard formats such as Euro-sized comics as well.

I decided to make a new thread after all, but it is too late to remove my original posts in another DC imprint news thread. Janitors can feel free to take either this or my old posts down.

<That bleeding cool article

>Batdick happens

>Batman Damned #2 gets more orders than the 1st issue

>News fluff pieces, people on the internet, and shitty late night talk show hosts talking about 'Batdick! Lol' were too much for DC to handle

>DC delays the series to be redrawn

>They also meddled with other series, just for good measure

>But moreover, DiDio told retailers that the Batman: Damned situation caused DC Comics to ‘rethink who they are as a company’.

They are retarded. DC had a golden goose and they fucked it up. Why would the whole incident make DC to rethink everything? Was Black Label too successful? Wasn't the whole point of it so that DC has an imprint for all the edgy shit that would not fly in their regular comic line?

If DiDio and Lee were smart, they would use the whole 'controversy' to advertise Black Label and other imprints as well. All it would take is emphasizing Black Label as the 'adult and experimental comics line' in every official statement they made when contacted by news sites due to the incident. Then they could just add that they are still putting out regular DC comics as well as kids aimed imprints like Ink and Zoom.

>>1052969

Xerxes comic was better than his other recent work. It's wasn't necessarily good, but it was not bad either. Maybe Miller can return to form once there is another creator and possibly an editor involved. Frank rally needs someone who can say 'no' to him and offer some constructive criticism.

I don't think Miller really hates Superman. TDK3 literally has one of the most respectful portrayals of Superman in recent history and even TDKR/TDKSB seem to show Superman more respect if you read between the lines. Miller seems more to dislike Superman as a nice-boy pansy who is always kissing ass, which is why the series seem like "Superman shedding his shell" story behind the scenes. People focus too much on what's in front of them and ignore Superman having one of the most well-developed character arcs in the series.

AN ALL-NEW NINE-ISSUE MONTHLY MINISERIES FROM DC BLACK LABEL, DEBUTING ON OCTOBER 2!

>In Gotham City, where heinous acts of violence are a daily occurrence, the GCPD relies on Harley Quinn, a young forensic psychiatrist and profiler, to consult on their toughest cases. But Harley is haunted by one case in particular—when she found herself at the center of a horrifying crime scene the night she discovered the body of her roommate, left with the signature of a notorious serial killer—the Joker.

>When a series of gruesome displays of murder appear throughout the city, the past and present collide as Harley’s obsession with finding the depraved psychopath responsible leads her down a dangerous path. She must decide how far she is willing to go, and what lines she is willing to cross to solve these cases once and for all.

STJEPAN SEJIC'S LONG-TEASED DC BLACK LABEL PROJECT OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED

>Dr. Harleen Quinzel has discovered a revolutionary cure for the madness of Gotham City—she just needs to prove it actually works. Through her studies of the criminals and sociopaths that pass through the halls of Arkham Asylum and the GCPD, Harleen is seeking to end the growing apathy among the citizens of Gotham. But with the criminal justice and mental health establishments united against her, the brilliant young psychologist must take drastic measures to save Gotham from itself.

>Following an attack on the city by the villainous Joker, Harleen will come face-to-face with one of the many criminals she hopes to heal—but she will soon find herself drawn into the madness and insanity that plagues him. Witness Harleen’s first steps on a doomed quest that will launch the legendary super-villain Harley Quinn in this stunning reimagining of Harley and the Joker’s twisted and tragic love affair.

>HARLEEN will be released in three monthly 'Books' beginning on September 25th, 2019. The three oversize issues in large-print format will also be available in a collected release in Spring 2020.

Considering that Bill Finger used Batman as an outlet to his near limitless knowledge of trivia, punny names should be expected.

So, does this make sense to anyone. They got rid of the Vertigo imprint to go for an age rating bracket but soon after they announce another imprint label within their new age rating bracket. Why would you dump your most recognizable imprint brand name if you're going to being creating imprints within those age brackets that you dump the imprints in the first place? At least with this new imprint, they seem to be trying something different. Whether they are good will be determined upon release.

DC BLACK LABEL ANNOUNCES TWO NEW ALBUM-FORMAT BI-MONTHLY MINISERIES PENNED BY JEFF LEMIRE

>DC continues to add more thrilling stories to its lineup this fall with the introduction of two new miniseries—JOKER: KILLER SMILE from writer Jeff Lemire (GREEN ARROW, Gideon Falls, Essex County) and artist Andrea Sorrentino (GREEN ARROW, Gideon Falls, Old Man Logan) available October 30, followed by THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE by Lemire and artists Denys Cowan (THE QUESTION, DETECTIVE COMICS, BLACK LIGHTNING/HONG KONG PHOOEY) and Bill Sienkiewicz (DEATHSTROKE, The New Mutants, Moon Knight) to be released November 20.

>In JOKER: KILLER SMILE Lemire and Sorrentino will share their own interpretation of one of the darkest characters of the Batman mythos—the Joker. For years, the Joker has terrorized Gotham, facing off with Batman time and time again. But now he’s found a new adversary, one that can deliver him from the purgatory of Arkham Asylum and set his madness free once more—the very doctor tasked with treating him. As he gets his hooks deeper and deeper into the mind of his prey, Joker sets off a chain reaction of mayhem that will threaten to tear down not only Gotham City but the soul of this idealistic man, and his young family, too.

>“Getting to work with my long-time collaborator Andrea Sorrentino on a Joker story is very exciting,” shares Lemire. “The Joker is an iconic character and we wanted to create something that challenges readers to look at him in a new and horrifying way.”

>Sorrentino adds, “This story has pushed me as a creator to aspire to new heights in storytelling. That little spark of madness in the Joker gives me an opportunity to play with the pacing, the layouts and the storytelling in a way that few other characters would allow.”

>JOKER: KILLER SMILE is a three-part story that will debut October 30, 2019, releasing every other month following.

>In THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE, Lemire, Cowan and Sienkiewicz launch a philosophical mystery starring Vic Sage—the Question. Building on the legacy of Dennis O’Neil and Cowan’s previous run, it begins in an early Hub City where an unsolved mystery has led to the demise of the Question—and history will soon repeat itself. Beginning in the Old West and continuing through the lawless 1930s, the answers needed to solve the problem are out of reach—and may doom the Question once again.

>The faceless man who believes in absolutes will soon find himself in a world where it all blends together, and escaping this trap is the only way to set himself free.

>Lemire adds, “Denys Cowan’s run on The Question has been a touchstone for me as a creator and a fan of comics for a long time. Getting the chance to team with Denys and Bill Sienkiewicz to return to Hub City and Vic Sage is a dream come true.”

>“Jeff is an excellent writer and this might be one of his best stories so far,” shares Cowan. “The series will go through multiple time periods and explore aspects of Vic Sage’s past and present that have never been explored before. Combined with Bill Sienkiewicz’s inks and Chris Sotomayor’s deft color touch, this may be the best version of the Question yet.”

>Sienkiewicz adds, “Working with Denys is always a rewarding experience, so revisiting the Question with him after all this time—and in a special format—is the textbook definition of a no-brainer. It doesn’t hurt that I’m also a huge fan of Jeff’s writing and Soto’s fantastic colors. What a team to be a part of.”

>THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE is a four-part story that will debut November 20, 2019, releasing every other month following.

Well, for one the new Joe Hill 'imprint' is a sub-imprint/line of comics under black label. DC did go too crazy with imprints, but instead they should just cull Bendis shit.

>>1067152

>The Question that isn't written by King or Bendis

>Vic Sage is The Question

>Story is set in Hub City

>It will involve proper detective work, research, and investigating

>Inspired by an old run that was not shit

It sounds decent. With some luck it will be good and steals spotlight from what Bendis' plans. That should be enough to minimize impact of Bendis' version, and maybe even push Montoya version further down the memory hole.

Any thoughts on the new Black Label titles currently in stores?
