DC ANNOUNCES YET ANOTHER IMPRINT: BLACK LABEL
With mature stories for mature readers, by acclaimed creators.
http://archive.is/odi4r
>The success of Batman: White Knight, Dark Knight III: The Master Race and Nightwing: New World Order has demonstrated a readership for more adult-suitable stories using DC Comics characters. So while DC Zoom and DC Ink offer comics aimed at a child and young adult audience I get the word that something called DC Black Label will feature comics aimed at adults using familiar DC characters.
https://www.dccomics.com/blog/2018/03/08/dc-launches-new-publishing-imprint-dc-black-label
http://archive.is/Jtt96
>DC Black Label is an imprint designed to allow “an all-star lineup of creative teams” to “craft their own personal definitive DC stories.” According to DC’s official press release, the imprint is inspired by some of the publisher’s most successful prestige titles including Batman: The Killing Joke, The New Frontier, The Dark Knight Returns, and Watchmen.
>According to DC co-publisher Jim Lee, Black Label books, much like the predecessors that inspired the imprint, will be creator led, rather than continuity driven, takes on the DC universe. He said:
<Many of our perennially best-selling, critically acclaimed books were produced when we unleashed our top talent on standalone, often out-of-continuity projects featuring our most iconic characters…creating DC Black Label doubles down on our commitment to working with all-star talent and trusting them to tell epic, moving stories that only they can tell with the highest levels of creative freedom.”
>When thinking of DC Black Label, longtime fans might turn to DC’s “Earth One” graphic novels as a point of comparison. The Earth One comics, like Black Label’s future books, do away with the intricacies of the standard DC Universe continuity, choosing to focus on making their stories accessible to readers outside the direct market.
>Each of the Black Label books “will have a unique format and release schedule to best serve the story and creative vision.”
>This opens the door not only to standard single issues and OGNs under Black Label, but less standard formats such as Euro-sized comics as well.
I decided to make a new thread after all, but it is too late to remove my original posts in another DC imprint news thread. Janitors can feel free to take either this or my old posts down.

List of books that will appear under Black Label imprint:
<SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr.
>A groundbreaking, definitive treatment of Superman’s classic origin story in honor of his 80th anniversary. This story details new revelations that reframe the Man of Steel’s most famous milestones—from Kal-El’s frantic exile from Krypton, to Clark Kent’s childhood in Kansas, to his inevitable rise to become the most powerful and inspiring superhero of all time.
<BATMAN: LAST KNIGHT ON EARTH from Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo
>the creative team behind DARK KNIGHTS: METAL
>Batman wakes up in a desert. He doesn’t know what year it is or how The Joker’s head is alive in a jar beside him, but it’s the beginning of a quest unlike anything the Dark Knight has undertaken before. In this strange future, villains are triumphant and society has liberated itself from the burden of ethical codes. Fighting to survive while in search of answers, Bruce Wayne uncovers the truth about his role in this new world—and begins the last Batman story ever told
<BATMAN: DAMNED from Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo
>On a deserted Gotham City bridge, a body is found. Whispers spread the news: Joker is dead. But is this a dream come true or a nightmare being born? Now Batman and DC’s outlaw magician John Constantine must hunt the truth through a Gotham City hellscape. The city’s supernatural recesses are laced with hints about a killer’s identity, but the Dark Knight’s descent into horror will test his sanity and the limits of rationality, as he must face a horror that doesn’t wear a mask.
<WONDER WOMAN HISTORIA: THE AMAZONS from Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Jimenez
>A Homeric epic of the lost history of the Amazons and Queen Hippolyta’s rise to power. Featuring monsters and myths, this three-book saga spans history from the creation of the Amazons to the moment Steve Trevor washes up on the shores of Paradise Island, changing our world forever.
<WONDER WOMAN: DIANA'S DAUGHTER from Rucka
>It’s been 20 years since the world stopped looking to the skies for hope, help, and inspiration. Now the world keeps its eyes down, and the powers that have risen have every intention of keeping things that way. Amongst a scattered, broken resistance, a young woman seeks to reclaim what has been forgotten, and on the way will learn the truth about herself, her heritage, and her destiny.
<THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE from John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, THE AMERICAN WAY)
>A compelling literary series analyzing iconic DC moments and charting sociopolitical gains through the perspectives of DC Super Heroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups, including John Stewart, Extraño, Vixen, Supergirl, Katana and Rene Montoya, among others. At its core, the story focuses on the lives of those behind the costumes, and their endeavors to overcome real-world issues. It isn’t about saving the world, it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.
What is DC doing with all these imprints lately? Are they making serious attempts at experimenting and diversifying their portfolio? Will it work, and change the market?

There is also MAD Books, and Bendis' Jinxworld might be coming to DC as well. Also, is Hannah Barbara it's own imprint, or is it a line with DC's regular comics?
Either way, DC might be going a bit overboard with these imprints. It would probably be better to just make Young Animal and Bendis's imprint into their own lines within Vertigo. Either way, at least DC is trying to do something. It makes sense to have different imprints for different demographics.

You just named two of the worst portrayals of Wonder Woman. One had her as a perpetually angry bitch who also craved Bat-cock, the other had her as a naive, bitchy girl who only calms partially after Steve Trevor spergs out at her.
The closest we got to a good Wonder Woman in animated form was the Young Justice version, ironically enough.

Because that wasn't the original premise. It's also the reason why Wonder Woman will forever be a shit character.
Wonder Woman, deep at the core concept of the book, is a fetish title. A fetish title all about bondage, sub/dom play, and "loving" femdom. Wonder Woman writers have tried for decades to cover it up with more feminist angles, but the character won't be good until they fully embrace what the character was meant to be.

The problem with the fetish shit is A) It's redundant what with the abundance and easy availability of porn nowadays (that there wasn't in 1941) and B) if bondage shit is not your fetish it's pretty much impossible to write well.
Wonder Woman's problem is not that she's based on mythology. Wonder Woman's problem is that she's been appropriated by angry feminist dykes who insist on her being an angry feminist dyke.

Your entire point is "Fetish shit in comic is bad because porn exists", when you seem to ignore the fact that you can cater to something without it being porn. Do you really think stuff like Minerva Mink wasn't written and/or animated by furfags, or that Jessica Rabbit's sex appeal wasn't lovingly added into every frame? Wonder Woman's Lasso of Truth is a vehicle for light bondage elements and as we've seen before, sex appeal is like bug spray to the kind of people wanting to turn her into an angry dyke. Play it up and everyone wins.
Look I'll sum it up for you in the simplest way: Sex Sells.

No it wasn't. My point was that it's probably not a good idea to excise elements of Wonder Woman's character that have been elements of her character from her inception right through to her modern interpretation, in favour of elements of her character which haven't been part of her character since her earliest incarnation. Especially when there's a better outlet for them.

And I believe you're wrong, since there have been plenty of holdover elements from earlier iterations for many, many different comics that have become iconic over the years. Superman's heat vision, Batman's utility belt, The Green Lantern's Rings. Hell the costumes themselves have, more or less, stayed consistent. Very few major alterations.
On top of that, even if you played up the mythology aspect, there'd be no reason to exclude the lasso and it's use. Aside from a slight flavor change. Yes there's "Better outlet" for them, just like you have better sources for mythology-themed heroes, but again, you can cater to something without it being porn. You seem to have this hangup where you either are unable to understand or refuse to acknowledge that fetishy material can exist alongside something else and not be outright, or even somewhat, pornographic. They definitely missed the point. White Knight didn't sell well because it was super mature or adult. It sold well because people were able to pick up and read a Batman comic without having read the past 2 years of continuity to know exactly what was going on, and could stop when the story ended. That's what most people want. It's easy to get people to read, "the White Knight miniseries" instead of "Samuel Dickboy's run on Superman from 1978-1982 plus all of the cross over comics that are part of events during that run"

It is official, and Mentallo appears in new Doom Patrol.
Lawsuit is old news. DC is not allowed to print or reprint any Flex Mentallo solo or titled series, or they could get sued again. However, character himself is protected as a parody, and can be used by DC in any way that would not dilute Atlas brand. That's why Mentallo is in new Doom Patrol, but DC hasn't reprinted the solo Flex Mentallo series since its original run.

That mini series felt like fanfiction.
> two harleys was a nice touch idea
> first harley being master keikaku was retarded. Her flaunting the fact people forget she has a phd is also stupid considering she canonically slept with her teachers to get through college and was not very bright otherwise
> Bruce was extremely villified to fit the plot and the joker's crimes were pretty much swept under the rug
> Joker allies with poor black neighborhood because diversity. Said poor black neighborhood is actually very organized, competent and has its own vigilante militia

One important bit in the comic was the idea that Harley left The Joker while he was beating Jason Todd to death. A fangirl came in and pretended to be Harley and the Joker never even noticed because he's insane and doesn't give a shit about her.

FINALLY AN UPDATE FROM DC PR ITSELF!
>DC Black Label is a brand-new publishing imprint dedicated to giving premier writers and artists the chance to expand on DC’s unrivaled characters with unique, standalone stories set outside DC continuity. The imprint will be DC’s home for classy, collectible superhero stories aimed at mature readers looking to be challenged and surprised as they’re entertained, with an eye for the unique and remarkable. In that regard, each DC Black Label series will have a unique format and a release schedule designed to best serve the story and creative vision, with the first of the previously announced DC Black Label titles set to debut later this year:
>BATMAN: DAMNED #1 – September 19, 2018 (bimonthly, three issues)
>SUPERMAN: YEAR ONE #1 – November, 2018 (bimonthly, three issues)
>THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #1 – December, 2018 (three issues)
>While the new, upcoming series have gotten fans talking—and all of us here at DC are as excited to read them as you are, so we certainly understand—they’ll also be joined under the banner by some beloved existing titles that represent the DC Black Label spirit and mission. These were Black Label books before there was a Black Label, and can give fans a clearer idea of what to expect from the line as a whole.
>The first out of the gate will be Sean Murphy’s BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT, which recently wrapped up its eight-issue run. With its ruminations on the true meaning of justice and whether Gotham City’s crimefighters may be just as mad as its criminals, Batman: White Knight resonated with fans and critics alike, resulting in one of the most important and thoroughly original Batman comics released in quite some time. A crucial storyline that both redefines the Dark Knight and his cast of characters while taking them on an imaginative and wholly original adventure that wouldn’t be possible within DC Universe continuity, Batman: White Knight will be right at home at DC Black Label when the collected edition is released on October 9th.
>In addition, fans can look forward to several of DC’s most acclaimed and influential comics getting a DC Black Label release as well. Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely’s ALL-STAR SUPERMAN, Darwyn Cooke’s DC: THE NEW FRONTIER and Mark Waid and Alex Ross’ KINGDOM COME will all soon be released under the imprint. They’ll also be joined by some historic work from legendary artist and writer Frank Miller, whose BATMAN: YEAR ONE and BATMAN: DARK KNIGHT: MASTER RACE will become part of the line as well, timed to the release of his new Superman: Year One series with John Romita, Jr.

>Hardly an omen if you don't just buy into the memes about him.
I like Frank Miller a lot and I don't even dislike his take on Superman from TDKR. I think he had a lot of really interesting ideas there, particularly the way he recovers from the nuke. I like the idea of Superman as Frank Miller conceived him and how he managed to turn Batman's conflict vs. Superman into a man against god struggle while simultaneously being man against man and man against society (government). But you can really tell Miller has a sense of antipathy toward the character even though he can use him effectively. I'm a little concerned that he can't tell a story with Superman as its protagonist because he fundamentally does not sympathize with Superman.
I am curious as to whether this is going to be in TDKR continuity or if it's going to be it's own thing, though.

TWO NEW DC BLACK LABEL TITLES ANNOUNCED
Batman/The Joker: Deadly Duo by Marc Silvestri (yep, this is in the works for long because of an injured hand)
>Lee introduced Marc Silvestri to the stage. Lee talked about he and Silvestri’s history, leading up to an image Silvestri did for a Batman anniversary story. After Lee saw the image, he said that Silvestri had to do a Batman story at some point in the future.
>Silvestri took the mic to announce his Black Label project, a Batman and Joker teamup called Batman/The Joker: Deadly Duo. Silvestri discussed the first pitch he submitted, which was rejected. Silvestri said he was going to have Batman never get over his parents’ death. He just sat in his room all day, playing video games and crying for six issues. HOW EXCITING.
>Silvestri said the premise of his story is that someone is “screwing with” the Joker. They’ve taken something important to him and Batman is forced into teaming up with him after someone kidnaps Jim Gordon and starts sending pieces of his body to him on a semi-regular basis. Batman/The Joker: Deadly Duo will be around 7.5 issues long, according to Silvestri. Like all Black Label books, this one exists outside of continuity.
Speaking of continuity…
Three Jokers by Geoff Johns and Jason Fabok (yep, it's in-continuity; second pic is the issue #1 cover)
>Three-issue prestige format bimonthly miniseries
>It centers on the shared pain of Bruce, Barbara and Jason and what does the Joker want with them and how the Joker operates.
>They hope to release it this winter
The comic book side of cuckchan is full of shills from all sides, twatterfags, phoneposters, and bleedingcucks so almost every time they post new project announcement threads, they seem to neglect to post the full details including any promo/cover art reveals in favor of actual screenshots.

But yeah the heavy handed social commentary that just comes from nowhere made reading through the story a struggle for me. I stuck it out though.
But if there's one thing I really really don't like, it's Batman's suit. Just looks like it has too many ideas mixed into one without realizing any of them enough.

>12 Years a Slave is an Oscar-winning examination of the horrors of slavery. THE AMERICAN WAY is one of best superhero stories of the last 25 years. On January 30, 2019, the brilliant writer behind both of them, John Ridley, returns to DC with the debut issue of THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE, a highly original new series that will be published under DC Black Label.
>The Other History of the DC Universe isn’t comics as usual. In fact, it’s a largely prose-driven series that will be supplemented with breathtaking illustrations by a rotating team of star artists. The Other History of the DC Universe will look at notable events from DC Universe history through a different perspective, telling the equally vital stories of heroes who have been there throughout the DCU’s past, but come from different disenfranchised groups.
>The first issue will focus on none other than Black Lightning, with cover and interior illustrations by Alex Dos Diaz. For a glimpse of what to expect—and trust us, you’ve never seen a series like this before—check out his cover along with the full solicitation for The Other History of the DC Universe #1 below.
THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE #1
Written by JOHN RIDLEY
Art and cover by ALEX DOS DIAZ
Academy Award-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave, Let It Fall, The American Way) examines the mythology of the DC Universe in this compelling new miniseries that reframes iconic moments of DC history and charts a previously unexplored sociopolitical thread as seen through the prism of DC Super Heroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups.
This unique new series presents its story as prose by Ridley married with beautifully realized color illustrations from a selection of exciting illustrators and comics artists. Alex Dos Diaz provides art for #1, which follows the story of Jefferson Pierce, the man who will one day become Black Lightning, as he makes his way from being a young track star to a teacher and, ultimately, to his role as a hero.
Future issues focus on characters such as Karen and Mal Duncan, Tatsu Yamashiro and Renee Montoya.
Extensively researched and masterfully executed, THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE promises to be an experience unlike any other. You may think you know the history of the DC Universe…but the truth is far more complex. THE OTHER HISTORY OF THE DC UNIVERSE isn’t about saving the world—it’s about having the strength to simply be who you are.

<That bleeding cool article
>Batdick happens
>Batman Damned #2 gets more orders than the 1st issue
>News fluff pieces, people on the internet, and shitty late night talk show hosts talking about 'Batdick! Lol' were too much for DC to handle
>DC delays the series to be redrawn
>They also meddled with other series, just for good measure
>But moreover, DiDio told retailers that the Batman: Damned situation caused DC Comics to ‘rethink who they are as a company’.
They are retarded. DC had a golden goose and they fucked it up. Why would the whole incident make DC to rethink everything? Was Black Label too successful? Wasn't the whole point of it so that DC has an imprint for all the edgy shit that would not fly in their regular comic line?
If DiDio and Lee were smart, they would use the whole 'controversy' to advertise Black Label and other imprints as well. All it would take is emphasizing Black Label as the 'adult and experimental comics line' in every official statement they made when contacted by news sites due to the incident. Then they could just add that they are still putting out regular DC comics as well as kids aimed imprints like Ink and Zoom.

Xerxes comic was better than his other recent work. It's wasn't necessarily good, but it was not bad either. Maybe Miller can return to form once there is another creator and possibly an editor involved. Frank rally needs someone who can say 'no' to him and offer some constructive criticism.

I don't think Miller really hates Superman. TDK3 literally has one of the most respectful portrayals of Superman in recent history and even TDKR/TDKSB seem to show Superman more respect if you read between the lines. Miller seems more to dislike Superman as a nice-boy pansy who is always kissing ass, which is why the series seem like "Superman shedding his shell" story behind the scenes. People focus too much on what's in front of them and ignore Superman having one of the most well-developed character arcs in the series.

So, does this make sense to anyone. They got rid of the Vertigo imprint to go for an age rating bracket but soon after they announce another imprint label within their new age rating bracket. Why would you dump your most recognizable imprint brand name if you're going to being creating imprints within those age brackets that you dump the imprints in the first place? At least with this new imprint, they seem to be trying something different. Whether they are good will be determined upon release.

DC BLACK LABEL ANNOUNCES TWO NEW ALBUM-FORMAT BI-MONTHLY MINISERIES PENNED BY JEFF LEMIRE
>DC continues to add more thrilling stories to its lineup this fall with the introduction of two new miniseries—JOKER: KILLER SMILE from writer Jeff Lemire (GREEN ARROW, Gideon Falls, Essex County) and artist Andrea Sorrentino (GREEN ARROW, Gideon Falls, Old Man Logan) available October 30, followed by THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE by Lemire and artists Denys Cowan (THE QUESTION, DETECTIVE COMICS, BLACK LIGHTNING/HONG KONG PHOOEY) and Bill Sienkiewicz (DEATHSTROKE, The New Mutants, Moon Knight) to be released November 20.
>In JOKER: KILLER SMILE Lemire and Sorrentino will share their own interpretation of one of the darkest characters of the Batman mythos—the Joker. For years, the Joker has terrorized Gotham, facing off with Batman time and time again. But now he’s found a new adversary, one that can deliver him from the purgatory of Arkham Asylum and set his madness free once more—the very doctor tasked with treating him. As he gets his hooks deeper and deeper into the mind of his prey, Joker sets off a chain reaction of mayhem that will threaten to tear down not only Gotham City but the soul of this idealistic man, and his young family, too.
>“Getting to work with my long-time collaborator Andrea Sorrentino on a Joker story is very exciting,” shares Lemire. “The Joker is an iconic character and we wanted to create something that challenges readers to look at him in a new and horrifying way.”
>Sorrentino adds, “This story has pushed me as a creator to aspire to new heights in storytelling. That little spark of madness in the Joker gives me an opportunity to play with the pacing, the layouts and the storytelling in a way that few other characters would allow.”
>JOKER: KILLER SMILE is a three-part story that will debut October 30, 2019, releasing every other month following.
>In THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE, Lemire, Cowan and Sienkiewicz launch a philosophical mystery starring Vic Sage—the Question. Building on the legacy of Dennis O’Neil and Cowan’s previous run, it begins in an early Hub City where an unsolved mystery has led to the demise of the Question—and history will soon repeat itself. Beginning in the Old West and continuing through the lawless 1930s, the answers needed to solve the problem are out of reach—and may doom the Question once again.
>The faceless man who believes in absolutes will soon find himself in a world where it all blends together, and escaping this trap is the only way to set himself free.
>Lemire adds, “Denys Cowan’s run on The Question has been a touchstone for me as a creator and a fan of comics for a long time. Getting the chance to team with Denys and Bill Sienkiewicz to return to Hub City and Vic Sage is a dream come true.”
>“Jeff is an excellent writer and this might be one of his best stories so far,” shares Cowan. “The series will go through multiple time periods and explore aspects of Vic Sage’s past and present that have never been explored before. Combined with Bill Sienkiewicz’s inks and Chris Sotomayor’s deft color touch, this may be the best version of the Question yet.”
>Sienkiewicz adds, “Working with Denys is always a rewarding experience, so revisiting the Question with him after all this time—and in a special format—is the textbook definition of a no-brainer. It doesn’t hurt that I’m also a huge fan of Jeff’s writing and Soto’s fantastic colors. What a team to be a part of.”
>THE QUESTION: THE DEATHS OF VIC SAGE is a four-part story that will debut November 20, 2019, releasing every other month following.

It sounds decent. With some luck it will be good and steals spotlight from what Bendis' plans. That should be enough to minimize impact of Bendis' version, and maybe even push Montoya version further down the memory hole.

This four-issue miniseries is a sequel to Conner and Palmiotti’s bestselling fan-favorite run that started in 2013, including the cast of crazy characters from Harley’s Coney Island crew (Harley Quinn, Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys). With Harley finally done with The Joker, she’s moving forward with her life (as only she can) until she’s beset by a rogue’s gallery of Gotham City’s worst villains, the target of a $10,000,000 bounty placed on her head by the Clown Prince of Crime. It will take the help of Black Canary, Cassandra Cain (a.k.a. Batgirl), Renee Montoya, and the Huntress to help Harley and get to the bottom of why The Joker has turned Gotham’s worst loose on her.
