What are some good fantasy comics out there? Preferably stuff like Tolkien with orcs, elves and dark lords, but anything else is welcome. Are there any good DnD comics?

There's Bone, it starts out funny, then becomes epic. Hal Foster's Price Valiant is an old classic with gorgeous art. Cerebus The Aardvark starts as a Conan parody then goes on for 300 issues while the writer loses his fucking mind. Groo the Wanderer is a vastly underrated book by a master, Usagi Yojimbo is another masterwork often skipped because it's a furry book. Last Of The Viking Heroes, Poison Elves, Ghita of Alizarr.
The Elric graphic novels are good.
The Courageous Princess is like Princeless if it wasn't shit written by a cunt and drawn by a shit-flinging monkey.
If you don't mind straying into manga, there's Berserk, Vinland Saga, Aqua Knight, Lone Wolf and Cub, Vagabond, The Rose Of Marseilles, Slayers, and Orion.

Seems like a good place to gauge opinion. What do you and everyone else prefer in regards to Bone? The original black and white collection or the individual colored volumes?
I have the complete edition in black and white. Enjoyed it but I feel as if the charm of the story is a little lost without color.

The comic's garbage now, but it wasn't too bad awhile ago. Rich has the same problem Roosterteeth has in that he's talented at humor but insists on being dramatic which he obviously isn't suited for (see the meandering bloated plotting).

I'm enjoying Scales and Scoundrels right now. Orcs, dwarves, etc. The main character has some sort of draconic lineage and is a classic rogue/thief type. It's lighthearted and fun. Color work is gorgeous. I can see how the art might not be for everyone, but I like it, particularly keeping in mind that it is an all ages book.

I read first two tomes of Dwareves and it's pretty good so far. Art is absolutely great, stories are solid, but dialogues do get a little bit edgy at times. What might be off-putting to some is that Dwarves live on surface and have a more of a blacksmith-highlander-warrior society instead typical blacksmith-miner-warrior.
Each of the books told completely standalone story with brand new characters. First one was about a common dwarf fighting his way to the top of the society. Second was a story of a dwarf assassin/thief who was putting together a heist to steal a legendary treasure.

You weren't kidding about the art - coloring aside it's pure tumblr. Premise does sound interesting enough to give it a try.

I read it after I have seen it discussed here once. It's only four issues long and can be easily found just by googling, so you should read it yourself and make your own judgement. I think it is shit. Closest comic to it is Rat Queens, but with a dash of elements from Conan. Battleaxes is not as bad as Rat Queens, but not much better either. There is no hipster shit in it, plot is slightly better, but characters are about as annoying.

Dark Ark is a pretty interesting ongoing series. It is a story set during The Deluge from Genesis, except it follows the second ark. In addition to Noah's Ark ordered by God, Satan ordered his own ark from one of the sorcerers who served him. Second ark was built to save various monsters from God's wrath, and if second ark survives, sorcerer will be released from all debts he owes to hell.

I decided to finally read the first volume. It is pretty good, and simple art style work very well for the action and authors do not get lazy with it. It is sort of like LastMan in how a simple style is used to its full potential in showing motion and flow of action. It's also nice to get an old protagonist for a change.
My only gripe is this page. Why would they leave the head out? Panels 2 and 3 would work much better if full monster head was in them. Panel 3 especially. It could basically just be replaced with a solid color filled panel with word Chomp, and it would achieve the same effect.
Another thing I appreciate about Head Lopper is ditching the standard release model. More independent creators should experiment and find what works best for them, instead of slavishly sticking to 20-30 pages a month, and have delays and hiatuses.

Two new recommendations.
Sword of Ages is basically a mixture of Arthurian myth and Starwars, but tech is basically magic, and king Arthur is a girl raised by magical Sabre tooth tigers and monks. It started recently and is only on second issue. It is authored and drawn by Gabriel Rodriguez, who was also the artist on Locke and Key.
Other one is Valan the Outcast. It is a decent book, but nothing groundbreaking. Just a pulp adventure story, with tone somewhat similar to Conan or Fafhrdt and Gray Mouser. Main character is a former king who is now an undead. He is on a quest to retrieve his soul back from a necromancer who killed and revived him. There are two volumes total.
Art is all over the place, and it fluctuates between good and lazy. Pictures are the best and the worst of what you can expect from it. Book also has some nice alternative covers.
>>974724
It above average at the very least. Art is very good, and writing is competent, but it has some mildly annoying elements that were common in late 90's/early 00's comics.

Originally, I read Bone in black and white and grew up reading more European and Japanese books, and both of which are commonly black and white. Not >>1000556, but Orc Stain is an entertaining books about orcs with some interesting ideas and very good art. Action and spreads looks especially good. These pages should give you an idea of what to expect. One thing that might bother some is that not all orcs are green hulking mountains of muscle and some are very goblin-like. There is also a lot of dick jokes and crude humor involved.
Main character is a one-eyed orc marauder who has an ability to spot and exploit weak spots. Book is about his misadventures as he is trying to get by while staying under the radar of the rising orc warlord's forces.
Unfortunately, there are only 7 issues, with #7 being a first issue of a brand new arc. Issue #8 has been in the works for about six years now. If shit like that bothers you a lot, just stop at #6.
I would recommend it myself earlier, but for some reason, I thought that it was recommended already.

To be fair Orc and Goblin are just different names for the same creature in the Tolkienverse. It was D&D and WoW that defined that Orcs should be giant green baras and goblins should be small fodder enemies.

I don't think it's ever been translated into English, but there's a comic version of Wolfgang Hohlbeins Chronik der Unsterblichen (Chronic of Immortals).
It follows the story of the vampire Andrei Delany throughout the ages. As far as I know, the later chapters take place in the modern world, but the first few ones are set in medieval eastern Europe and have a strong fantasy vibe.
The artwork is quite good, too.
If any of you can track down any scans of the German version I'd be happy to translate them for you.

It's sorta fantasy I guess, but I'm not certain where else to ask.
Does anyone remember a comic that told the story of a woman who rescued a village's popular hunter/warrior, won his heart by refusing to be seduced by him, and then when they grew old the guy was killed by a rival tribe attacking the village while the warriors were away. The lady entertained them and got them drunk until the warriors returned and killed them. Always thought it was a neat story, just can't remember where it was from…

Well, Slaine suggests itself. From the same magazine as Judge Dredd, high points about the same era, shares a few creators, kind of like a sleazier Conan, based on Celtic myth.
Apart from that, maybe Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Frank and Brutal from Phantastique, Kull, Solomon Kane, old Conan comics, and Den.
Across the water, I'd say Lone Wolf and Cub, Berserk, and Claymore.

This is reminding me of a series I saw posted on here a long time ago, but I can't for the life of me remember the name.
I'm pretty sure it was based loosely around the four horsemen of the apocalypse thematically, with "death" being the main character. Lots of betrayal, and people going crazy, and it had like 9+ volumes, maybe more that weren't translated or something, or it might have just ended, but it was good and it's driving me crazy not remembering the name. The early volumes follow him and his brother as kids with a wolf mom or something if that helps at all…

I recently read Arawn. It's good pulpy fantasy. It's a story of a bastard with mommy issues becoming a god of death and revenge. His magical talking cauldron is probably the best character.
Comic borrows a lot from ancient legends. So there is rape, murder, trials, prices to pay, and so on. Welsh and Celtic ones seem to be the main influences, so it has some similarities to Slaine. English translation is kind of clumsy but not horrible.

I just checked it out. It's not that good - it's plot with Cain wanting to die and battling enemy after enemy to do so. If someone is interested in more of an throwback to old Italian and French fantasy, Swords of Glass is pretty good. Plot starts small, with a girl trying to avenge her dead parents. In the process she gets mixed up in a prophecy involving magical glass swords and saving her world's dying sun.
It is good, but a bit strange book, borrowing from thighs like Arthurian legends, Fantaghiro, Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Moebius, Druillet, and many other influences. However, it's far more original and less derivative than most comics that do that, like Sword of Ages in >>979718 for example. Closest thing to Swords of Glass it is probably Omer and the Starchild animated series, although that's pretty niche in Anglophone world and could probably be counted as lost media.

God, this. I enjoyed the comic at first and the science fantasy setting made it feel almost like a more mature Adventure Time. But it just gets way too preachy.
>Petrichor
A transgender character that feels like it was forced in because they wanted an excuse to harp about gender every few chapters. Made extra confusing because the character is an ultra-conservative wizard from a planet of ultra-conservative wizards and is a true believer in the race-war that is the basis of the setting.
>The Will
Introduced as a badass bounty hunter trying to move on after the death of his spider waifu. Just as how arc gets some closure everything goes to shit, his GF and adopted daughter bail and his character becomes completely different.
>Upsher and Doff
Investigative journalists/lovers chasing the story of the century. Actually well written, but every once in a while the comic feels the need to remind you that they bone. Which wouldn't be a problem if their apparently liberal homeworld didn't hate gays for some fucking reason.
I'm sure there's other inconsistencies but that's all I've got off the top of my head. IV deserves a better comic.

Hot damn, Anon, that's a lot of the contrivances I had in mind, too. I'll add some of my thoughts.
>Petrichor
What's weirder is, is that he still has his penis and hasn't fully transitioned. Petrichor is from a magical race that has teleportation helmets and rocket ships grown from trees, yet they can't make a spell that fully changes your gender? This is doubly dumb as we later learn that Upsher and Doff's race can move your consciousness into a new body, which means there are ways to transition (fully) in universe. Speaking of:
>Upsher and Doff
I don't mind that the two are a gay couple, but their planet makes no sense. The planet holds freedom of speech and the freedom of the press in the highest regard. However, they also hate the gays, in fact, they hate them so much that being one can ruin your life permanently. This means that gay accusations should be thrown around constantly, although this is left ignored and unexplored. It's dismissed and we move on.
>Marco
This one pissed me off the most. Marco is shown to be extremely competent throughout the comic, so much so that he still ties up an elite unit of marines, even after having knocked them out and severed at least one dudes hand. When he faces off against the Will, who has just murdered a companion, he doesn't tie him up after knocking him out. The rest is infuriating.
>But it just gets way too preachy
Yeah, no doubt. I saw Marco's death coming a mile off. He was getting more and more useless with every passing issue. It really feels like the author starting putting his virtue signalling before the story. You got me ranting now, I'll drop a couple more things.

>abortion
This one is just bizarre, on multiple levels. Alana was pregnant with a second child, but has gotten a miscarriage. The problem is that the dead baby is still stuck in the womb. So, they cook up a plan to get it removed. When they arrive at Abortion Town, they then ask for an abortion… even though they need a C-section, which they know… What's weirder is the imagery.
You have a Texan owl willing to give abortions, but then talks about the legislature that forbids late term abortion. A ruling that was of course done by the evil patriarchy. This strikes me as an extremely poor attempt at satire, but it doesn't make any sense. The Texan owl looks like he's supposed to be a republican stand-in, but then surely he would be completely anti-abortion. However, his rhetoric is more akin to that of the pro-life movement. It's so fucking weird and I'm still not sure if there's a political point in there.

>characters are well written
Maybe compared to most big two and popular creator owned books. Saga is some of Vaughans's weaker writing, and he almost goes full Wheadon at times.
>>1057888
>>1057933
>>1057935
>>1057937
Pozz and contrived characters aside, Saga is just The Walking Dead for hipsters
>Story with no clear goal
>Father, Mother, and a Child are the main protagonists with more and more focus upon a child as the book goes on and one parent dying
>Each arc introduces a few new major characters - one or two of the get killed towards the end of that arc, remaining one or two join protagonists and get killed or depart the group in later arcs
>Story follows the cycle of: run -> peace and safety -> everything going wrong -> run
>One of the main characters gets badly hurt in each arc
>Every few arcs one member of the protagonist group makes a heroic sacrifice for the good of the group
>Groups of very disposable enemies with one prominent antagonist per arc that's an actual character
Worst thing is just how repetitive, predictable, and uncreative Saga is. Just like The Walking Dead, it is creators spinning wheels and going nowhere. Whole arc of nothing happening as main group is just hanging around on a ruined planet with some sentient rodents? Sure! Vaughan tries to trick readers into thinking that something is happening by killing characters frequently. However, he abuses that trick to the point that death loses its impact. It's not 'will they get out of this alive?' anymore but rather 'Who's turn it is to die this time?'.
Besides following the walking dead loop and relaying on the same cheap tricks, nearly each volume has:
>Someone getting shot in the shoulder and surviving
>A new cute mascot character
>A Seth Rogen movie tier gross out moment - usually involving dicks and balls or gore
>One sociopolitical issue at the forefront
>Prince Robot being pathetic and having bad luck
>Hamfisted pop culture parody
Art is pretty lackluster too. Very simplistic blocking and angles. Obvious reuse of art. Lazy backgrounds. Characters are always shaded the same way, regardless of lighting conditions, which makes backgrounds look like bad green screen backdrops. Poor visual storytelling. Characters are very stiff. Staples also gets lazy with perspective, which ends with characters looking like cardboard cutouts at points. First panel in second image in >>1057937 is a one example of that. While I'm at it, look at the panels 2 and 3 as well, especially at man's right arm in both panels. Why did he let go of the girl right before executing a swing? I have no idea why these low effort drawings take Staples so long.
Alien designs are shit too. They are all basically:
>humans
>humans but with x
>human-animal hybrid
>Animals
>Animals but with x
When old Doctor Who series and generic 50's Sci-Fi serials with no budget have better alien designs, you fucked up.
Same goes for alien societies. Most of them are modern USA societies but with x. Down to suburbs with white-picked fences and cereal commercials. Despite existence of animal-shaped aliens, everything in the world is built to accommodate bipedal, human-sized beings with two arms for some reason.
And yet for some reason, people praise Saga for its originality and high quality of both writing and art. Good thing that at least it won't drag for as long as the Walking Dead.

No need to. The Order was written in English and published by Rebellion - although for a Brit, Kek-W is oddly familiar with German, Polish, and Czech languages and history.
All four series initially ran in 2000AD. First two were collected into a standalone volume. Third one was in progs 2011 - 2022, and fourth one last year in progs 2087 - 2099. I haven't read them yet, so it's hard to say how they compare to the first two. Rebellion will probably collected them into a single volume this or next year.

Ehhhh, I disagree. Hinterkind would have been more interesting if there were no humans in it at all. Not because they are extinct, but its implied they've gone into hiding. They are the new mythological race, the new fair folk.
Maybe you felt their presence at times, like if they find a seemingly deserted bunker but then realise that the lights are still on and there is freshly prepared food on the table. Perhaps some campfire stories about meeting humans deep in a mountain that are easily brushed off.

Only in-continuity series that were meh were Route 666, the Silken Ghost WoTR spinoff, and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and all of those had bright spots.
I'm gonna be making an issue by issue reading order for the main continuity stuff from CrossGen in the near future if you're interested in reading it all in order (it's all on readcomiconline if you're not aware of that). I've read it all in order before going by release dates with a couple things shifted around cause of some plot elements and it's an amazing ride, although one that's very sad by the end. Stupidly didn't keep track of my order cause I figured there was one out there somewhere but there isn't. I'll post it on here if and when I'm done with it.
Also got legit scripts for the unreleased issues of Negation War (that crossover event they were releasing when they went bankrupt). Pretty underwhelming frankly, at least compared to the quality of those first 3 years of CG but I can post those too if anyone would like.
