I think maybe they made him a little TOO dark, but that's just me.
My bigger complaint is that I don't like how they shrunk his head and eyes. The posing looks more unnatural as composed to the 2000 era design but again that's just my opinion and the test poses they put him in. He looks too normal and less expressive now, which really is a damn shame but considering we haven't seen much of him in promotional material maybe it will look better in motion.

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac and Squee! were all before Zim. I Feel Sick was sorta-during/after Zim.
After Zim, Vasquez didn't really do a whole lot apart from some small stuff like Jellyfist. He did however provide all the designs for Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, so he technically was back on tv after Zim. He also wrote an animated TMNT short.
I don't know what else he's done since. I used to be a huge dork for everything Vasquez made.

Vasquez was the original character designs. The actual character designer for the original series and Enter the Florbus was Aaron Alexovich. Alexovich also penciled Invader Zim comics issues #0 - 5, 8, and #16.

If that's the case then it doesn't bode well for this movie's quality if Vasquez doesn't have it in him anymore and is just doing it for cash. It hurts that I recall reading that Nick did actually give an offer to Vasquez for him to have a series to do, but he talked that down into a miniseries, lastly talked that one down into a movie.

The comic part is probably like 20 minutes of it, the actual story shown isn't even that long of an arc in context.
The bulk was always blatantly going to be mostly original with the comic functioning as a start, the comic doesn't have the continuity to continue past that point and the trailer had shit like the control brains in it.

There literally isn't anything in the comics attached to the arc shown except for said arc, basically nothing in the comics is linked.
The point is that a movie isn't going to jump from barely related stories and i don't even remember the control brains being in the comics at all; and in terms of flashbacks it doesn't actually make sense to show them directly.
