The creator left the show after the first episode of the season. The remaining writing staff spun up a plot with the heroes trying to find acceptance in society, a plot made complete with an anti-gargoyle KKK.
The season had some interesting ideas, like Goliath standing trial for robbery and refusing to break out because if they want acceptance they must be subject to the rule of law (a plot basically mirroring Beast's in X-Men season 1 but in a single episode), but ultimately you come to the realization that season 3 just isn't the show you've been watching before that point.
