>Superman Smashes The Klan, announced at the beginning of last year, initially as a part of the DC Zoom line-up aimed at middle grade readers, is Gene Luen Yang‘s long-awaited and anticipated stand-alone pairing with the art studio Gurihuru. The comic will finally see its debut this October.
>“The year is 1946, and the Lee family has moved from Metropolis’s Chinatown to the center of the bustling city. While Dr. Lee is greeted warmly in his new position at the Metropolis Health Department, his two kids, Roberta and Tommy, are more excited about being closer to their famous hero, Superman!
>“While Tommy adjusts to the fast pace of the city, Roberta feels out of place, as she tries and fails to fit in with the neighborhood kids. As the Lees try to adjust to their new lives, an evil is stirring in Metropolis: the Ku Klux Klan. When the Lee family awakens one night to find a burning cross on their lawn, they consider leaving town. But the Daily Planet offers a reward for information onn the KKK, and their top two reporters, Lois Lane and Clark Kent, dig into the story.
>“When Tommy is kidnapped by the KKK, Superman leaps into action — with help from Roberta! But Superman is still new to his powers — he hasn’t even worked out how to fly yet, so he has to run across town. Will Superman and Roberta reach Tommy in time?
>“Inspired by the 1940s Superman radio serial ‘Clan of the Fiery Cross,’ Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese, Boxers and Saints, The Terrifics, New Super-Man) brings us his personal retelling of the adventures of the Lee family as they team up with Superman to smash the Klan.”
Try not to derail the thread this time.

I’ve been thinking about this. There has to be dozens of similar comics of X character fights the KKK. Can an organization sue a company for publishing stories that deride members of the organization for being bigots, even if they are ones?

No, and why would they? Whoever files the suit would be publicly identified as being a member of the Klan, the case would get laughed out of the court the moment the judge looks at it, and that particular Klan would lose precious members because what racist hood-wearing mouth-breather wants to be part of a Klan that doesn't hate niggers or is OK with Jews.

Irrelevant to plenty of klansmen. A lot of documentaries and other public educational or information based entertainment have interviews with named members of the klan and include non-blurry images of their faces.
>the case would get laughed out of court the moment a judge looks at it
Why? Because the plaintiff is a klansmen? A good judge would be impartial. That’s not to say I believe they would win or even that the case is particularly good but I don’t necessarily think that there’s no case at all
>would lose precious members because what racist hood-wearing mouth-breather wants to be part of a Klan that doesn't hate niggers or is OK with Jews
Plenty, a lot of klansmen are just race supremacists and segregationists. There was an interesting TedTalk a few years ago about a black musician who made friends with a high level member of the KKK. In that video, the KKK member made a speech that said something like “I have more respect for that black man than some of these white niggers” and then all the klansmen cheered
I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that a lot of members of the KKK think of it as a community for whites that believe in segregation than an active terror organization

The term “race” is often used to refer to other species. Ever read fantasy, or played a fantasy game? Non human sentient species are often referred to as a “race” in that instance.
In this case, the original post made it pretty clear. Superman is literally part of an alien race superior to everyone on earth, at least physically. It doesn’t matter what his personal thoughts are, it’s just a fact.

I hate to be the one bring it up because I don't really know much about it but this is a tribute to some old Superman radio show.
>In 1946, the series delivered a powerful blow against the Ku Klux Klan's prospects in the northern US. The human rights activist Stetson Kennedy infiltrated the KKK and other racist/terrorist groups. Concerned that the organization had links to the government and police forces, Kennedy decided to use his findings to strike at the Klan in a different way. He contacted the Superman producers and proposed a story where the superhero battles the Klan. Looking for new villains, the producers eagerly agreed. To that end, he provided information— including secret codewords and details of Klan rituals—to the writers. The result was a series of episodes, “Clan of the Fiery Cross”, in which Superman took on the Klan. Kennedy intended to strip away the Klan's mystique. The trivialization of the Klan's rituals and codewords had a negative impact on Klan recruiting and membership.
I made this >>1067422 comment to make fun of idea of using a super powered alien to fight the idea of racial supremacy. I didn't expect brainlet arguments that relied on twisting the meaning of words.

It might actually be decent or good. The major problem is going to be the fact that the KKK is a fucking joke nowadays and no one takes it seriously. I would say the entire comic depends on whether or not it feels like a story set in the 1940s, or if it feels like a story that someone wish happened in the 1940s.

Not in a moral sense but he isn't delusional enough to believe normal people can take same physical punishment as he does.
>especially when you consider that he uses his powers to help his fellow man.
Again, not relevant.
Superman thinks that there are many humans that would done the same things that he does if they had his powers. Thus, he thinks that he isn't more noble than any normal human. This does not mean that he doesn't think that he isn't stronger or faster than any average person. Even if he is that delusional, he is clearly physically superior to humans to a point beyond human limitations. Superman using his powers to stop the KKK actually proves the concept of racial superiority just not White supremacy.
>Have you fucking read a Superman comic? Superman takes being called a human as a compliment.
My point was hating something or not thinking that it worth caring about isn't a prerequisite of believing to be superior to it.

That’s not absurd dummy, it would be absurd for the klan to argue they are a religion and deserve tax exempt status
The klan could, tomorrow, declare that they disavow all of the actions of their founders until modern day and state that it’s a new era for the klan or whatever. Then they could make an argument to a judge that since they have changed enough from the 1800’s that they are functionally a different group and don’t deserve to further have their name tarnished by companies using the KKK as inbred, ignorant, villains for the hero to beat up on
If the klan were to somehow get themselves off the list of hate groups, then it would also be possible for them to stop being used as characters via legal action. It’d be an uphill battle certainly but it’s not absurd to suggest it’s in the realm of possibility

That's you're first mistake. There are numerous Klans and any Klan attempting to sue for defamation will that to prove it directly referencing them.
Of course, that's assuming the judge doesn't throw it out for being frivolous, because any group that chooses to call themselves the Ku Klux Klan should know what they signed up for.

> There are numerous Klans and any Klan attempting to sue for defamation will that to prove it directly referencing them
I think that’s irrelevant in the context of my hypothetical, it’s assumed that all klans just give up their deeply held beliefs and start going for PR all at once. If all of them at once begin espousing the same beliefs, the different klans aren’t actually any different
Further, the different klans in different states are just arms of the whole KKK, like the Democratic Party for example. You wouldn’t suggest that the Democrats in like Maine or Arizona or somewhere are a completely different organization than the national level, so why would you suggest that the KKK functions any different? There are different cultural aspects certainly because the states are different but they hold the same name because they hold the same general set of beliefs. In this hypothetical, they wouldn’t need to prove which particular klan is being defamed because the whole organization is being defamed
>because any group that chooses to call themselves the Ku Klux Klan should know what they signed up for
The name of an organization doesn’t necessarily always carry the history associated with it. You can use the Democratic Party as an example again for that.

>The only reason they dug up this old radio play and adapted it was just to virtue signal
he's virtue signalling to all the /pol/fags and "anti-sjws" that he's got the "correct" opinion about white nationalism/white supremacy/racism etc. That becomes clear when you consider that nobody would ever have to virtue signal that they hate the KKK. Everyone hates the KKK, even KKK members. It's not something someone would have to make their opinion known about.
Why not an adaption of Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy? Because that's not what the author wanted to do. The author looked at The Adventures of Superman: Clan of the Fiery Cross and said "Hey, this has got some messages for today. And it's got Chinese, and I'm Chinese! I can also talk about Chinese stuff!" And that's why we're getting Superman Smashes The Klan and not Jack Armstrong Goes to Africa or Something.

A. He believes the reason they dug up this radio play and adapted this particular story is because they wanted a story about hateful white people

The problem he's stating this comic is virtue signalling. Virtue signalling usually consists of empty acts of public commitment, like changing profile pictures and making crappy twitter posts. Things that require no effort and carry no risk. This 240 page comic. That's a lot of work to be considered an "empty act".
This is were the accusation that anon was virtue signalling when he was calling this "virtue signalling" comes from. It's clear that the author has investment in this book and believes in what he's doing, for good or ill. By dismissing it as something on the same level as adding a rainbow flag to your twitter handle, he's making a show of his support of alt-right /pol/ crap.

True but not always, something you yourself appear to believe as indicated by your use of "usually"

Virtue signalling isn't an empty act in the minds of those signalling, as there would be no reason to do so if they thought that. That's irrelevant however, this comic, like almost all of them was made to make money and there's no reason this comic cannot be made to make money and also virtue signal
> It's clear that the author has investment in this book and believes in what he's doing, for good or ill
While this may be true, the possibility of this comic also being intended to virtue signal still remains
See this quote from the archive:
"I just think that, maybe we’re so far removed from that period that we’re beginning to forget those lessons."
The implication of this statement appears to be the author perceives a rise of white supremacy in modern America and has created this book as a way to lecture readers about tolerance by having superman, a fictional representation of good and America itself, defeat the KKK, a group that has been depicted as cartoonishly evil for decades.

>"I started this project because I thought it was something that I needed to understand. There’s a Chinese tradition that you use the events of the past as a way of talking about the present; I did come onto this project thinking about that, thinking, if I can understand the historical context that there was something about the present that I’d understand a little bit better."
I'm sure Yang's career as a cartoonist and comics lecturer, whose previous work ,American Born Chinese, dealt with the struggles of Chinese kids fitting into American culture, played a part in his decision to do this. "Clan of the Burning Cross" not only features Chinese characters, but is possibly the most historic piece of Superman media ever created. It's exposure of Klan secrets dealt a serious blow to the KKK and severely impacted their ability to recruit new members.

Nigger, what? Reality check that stuck, I mean. Even after the whole MODOK thing and Batroc finding out she's incompetent, she started falling back into bad habits once Cecil came back as a ghost and sent MODOK into space, since it confirmed her bias that she's the hero and thus has plot armor for whatever she does (as evidenced by her trying to team-up with Nigger-Spidey, then attempting to murder his school-bomber classmate because he's an irrelevant bit-villain and somehow expecting the superhero not to have an issue with that).
It was only after seeing the nadir of her behavior in the form of a future version of herself killing future versions of her friends and heroes she liked that she started changing for the better.
