The good thing about this series is that for whatever popularity it has now, it will become dated extremely quickly. If the 90's had copious amounts of shadows and edginess, and X-TREME Skaterz, then the 2010's will be regarded as the "muh diversity" era of comics and cartoons, where there was an absurd overabundance of gay, racial, or other categorical characters that were poorly written.

Moreover, it lacks the timelessness, the ethereal qualities we instinctively recognize in other shows that will let them stand the test of time. Years from now, people will remember Avatar: The Last Airbender with the same fondness they regard Batman: The Animated Series currently, because those stories are memorable. Steven Universe though? It's too targeted, too specific, too narrow in its focus to stay relevant throughout the years. It might stand out as being representative of the cliches of the era, and people will remember it for that, but it won't be remembered for being Good, even by its current fans.

The other problem is that Steven Universe is a show with an absolutely horrendous good-to-shit ratio when it comes to episodes. 6 fucking years and all they have to show for it are several dozen townie episodes, a few multi-parter episodes that have something resembling action and story, and then lots of dumb bullshit where Steven just cries and everything turns out alright. Unfortunately, the nostalgia goggles on this one will be thick and permanently affixed to the faces of any critics in the future who bring this shit up. I realize this show is supposed to be fluffy and ~kawaii UwU.~ I know it's supposed to be about the joys of having fun and being yourself and not striving to be perfect and all that crap, but the storyboarders really dropped the ball by wanting to have forty cakes and eat them too. You can't set up these conflicts with earth-shattering stakes and spend most of the time on side characters with conflicts that mean so little they have no impact whatsoever. You can't introduce characters that actually matter to the story just to set them aside, turn them into parodies of themselves, or shut them into a locker halfway through development only to give them lip-service at the very end. You can't set up the bad guys as ultra-utilitarian dictators for one or two episodes, ignore them to have cutesy tea parties for twelve, and have them get redeemed by "showing their ~sensitive sides~" in another two or four. The show wants to be an anti-shonen so badly that the pieces don't mesh, if they're even used at all.

They are only ever described as their cousin, and all the ghosts are described always in gender-neutral "they." Man I really feel like Steven Universe was originally someone else's concept but Sugar somehow got her hands on it and has been slowly rewriting it. There's such a stark difference between things in the first and current seasons it's hard to believe they're the same show.

The first season was a monster-of-the-week show with the occasional "dungeon" to break things up, the fusions were more mystically (the giant temple, Opal's look, and even Sugulite resembled some sort of ogre. Vs later fusions that looked like faggy magical boys and obviously toyetic designs), inclined and there was the plot hook of corrupted gems becoming monsters.

I don't really have any proof that's concrete but I can't think of any other real reason why the show would take such a hard left turn in style, storytelling, and flavor.

Early SU was Transformers meets Sailor Moon. The last time we had a Drawthread past CY+1 the OP forgot to use proper drawthread etiquette and make a delivery anchor, etc, it would take a very high quality op to be able to bring drawthreads back which by the way died because they stopped being posted. No one wanted them banned like Cheescake threads which people only did due to the op having been caught for a bit of drama, like I said if you want to revive cheescake threads which I'm frankly all for, it would have to be in a progressive high quality form that improves on the old one's.

2nd, people most certainly used to derail bad threads in the old days, whenever someone shilled e celeb video's or online comics on paetreon they'd be called out on it 1st post.

It's the diamonds showing up at the right time that was convenient, them keeping Pink Spaghetti as a pet ties together the segment from the beginning of the movie where they wanted Steven to stay with them because they're lonely cat ladies

It's a dumb premise, but then the whole diamond plotline was dumb anyway, and that wrapped it all up in a way that was at least good for all the characters involved

Turns out Steven's stand from the finale was actually foreshadowing, and he now has a pink kaioken powered by negative emotions, which the show is no longer shying away from

Overall, the storytelling also seems better, this is all mostly stuff that would've just been filler before, but it's all tying into Steve-O's character development, which seems to be the main plot of this thing for once

So, Future's almost over, not that anyone cares

It's far better than the actual series, but it's hard to even say that without stressing how late in the game this is for any of the shit this deals with to start mattering

Future's been alright so far, and I think half of what makes this episode work is that the rest of the episodes leading up to it actually form a coherent plotline with shit like this as the payoff to all that buildup, instead of being strictly episodic
