Are there any good horror themed comics?

30 days of night is nice, the art is kinda shitty but it fits the disturbing scenery.

I haven't seen a good Lovecraft based comic book so far, relying too much in tentacles and too little in the actual lovecraftian horror.

Well regarding lovecraft comics I just got one that had pretty good art. It's depiction of Cthulu is different since it doesn't go for just the octopus look it's more like some amorphous blob with other things from other creatures in it that looks indescribable. It was a unique design.

What kind of horror, anon? I could suggest some old classic like them EC Comics stuff like Tales from the Crypt. Wanted to suggest Creepy and Eerie but their later issues just stop being about horror and just have their own little stories.

Lovecraft's father got institutionized is that what you call getting someone in the asylum? when Lovecraft was 2, and he died institutionized.

Lovecraft's mother became crazy and overprotective to her child and tried to turn Lovecraft into a trap, and when the boy wanted to be a chad she refused to touch him since then.

Lovecraft had shitty health both in body and mind, also got the weirdest mixture of overportectiveness and neglect you could even think. Full protection and spoilage but no maternal touch and be called ugly on his back by his own mother.

He got a rich aristocrat education before his family got broke in his teen years.

Thanks to his mother he was disgusted with the idea of sex yet he did his job well his wife said.

He married a jew widow with a teen child, then went to live to New York, but while she wanted to change him he just wanted a second mother.

He was shy and craved for friends, yet he is branded as a racist and a shitlord by ugly old feminist hags.

He was insecure and on his last years he felt embarassed about all he wrote.

He never had a child. For fuck's sake, that's the most horrible saddest thing, he never had a child.

He died of a gut cancer that could have been cured if it was detected earlier.

He was, basically, a poor anon who just wanted to read, write and have friends while writing and reading.

H.P.'s works reflect a lot of the shit that haunted him, noticeably evolutionary degeneration and the country being overrun by foreign mongrels. He supposedly could trace his lineage to bong aristocracy and yet both his parents went bananas and he, for a large portion of his life, lived in a shitty place overrun by criminals (Red Hook) and working for pennies, sometimes ghostwriting for other authors. He was also complexed about his poor health and how it hindered him which reflects in many of his heroes being WW1 veterans.

His joys seemed to be Providence and cats, the man loved cats. His work tends to be associated with feelings of oppressive dread and knowledge that can break a man's soul but there's a moment in Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath that feels straight out of a old Disney move when the main character is captured and taken to the moon, then is saved by a army of cats whom he had previously befriended and then the cats jump from the Moon to the Earth carrying him on their backs. Dunno why, but reading that part makes me feel the man had a bit of respite.

>>1008341

The fishman rape isn't as bad as how he rapes H.P.'s work, with superficial mentions, shit that makes no sense and a big coat of degenerate paint over all of it.

Anyway, not comics, but I thoroughly recommend his works. All that shit's online and easy to find on Wikipedia, most are quick reads and a lot are pretty good - The Rats in the Walls, The Dunwich Horror, The Shadow Over Innsmouth, The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Pickman's Model, The Lurking Fear etc.

Also seconding Junji Ito who IMHO excels on short stories. His longer ones feel like they're just there to show off crazy imagery and invariably build up to absurdity; still worth a read just for said crazy imagery though.

People who show their face a lot and post their names everywhere on their works like their name is a brand usually always hide behind other people's works and ideas, like Hideo Kojima and Tom Clancy did.

He's a grumpy, no-fun-allowed asshole that borders on pretentiousness and obsession with homos. I agree with his claim that Hollywood shits everything but that's hardly a groundbreaking insight.

That said, I like Watchmen and I remember liking V for Vendetta when I read it years ago though I think I wouldn't now. 'From Hell' is interesting in the sense that it's a Jack the Ripper story where you know right off the bat who he is and it's about exploring his motivations but then you're getting bombarded with "muh ebil patriarchy" bullshit.

>>1008602

I sped-glanced the series as I'm a fan of HPL and yeah, he basically just makes superficial references to his most famous works and adds a ton of gay shit because it's "subverting Lovecraft" or some pretentious bullshit that, obviously, everyone loved (besides people who like HPL's work, I'd wager).

I've seen a lot of shit and a lot of shit accessories but the part where Nyarlathotep is a fag with a asshole for a mouth almost made me sick.

>>1008604

>injecting depravity

That's exactly what he does. All this sexual crap has no business in Lovecraft's mythos but Alan Moore thinks he's very clever and obviously when HPL talked about "ancient rituals" he obviously meant hardcore gay orgies but he was too much of a prude to say it. Obviously.

Most of Joe Hills' comics involve at least some elements of horror, and are good. Locke and Key is a straight up mix of horror and adventure, and manages to be clearly inspired by Lovecraft, but avoiding common tropes of tentacles, fish-people, and crazy cultists. His Tales from the Dark Side are also very good short horror stories.

I am surprised no one recommended them yet.

>>1008600

It really depends with Moore. He wrote a lot of good books, and you should in no way stay away from that, it's just that Moore became an out of touch has-been. His early stuff is good, but the longer he wrote, the worse it generally got. His most recent work that I would call good are Top Ten and Tom Strong related books. I also enjoyed Promethea, but I read it as a teen, so I would need to re-read it before I can actually recommend it.

If you take away the Sherlock Holmes part, this sounds a lot like Baltimore. He sees eldritch vampires on the WWI battle field instead and has visions of eldritch god and a plague later on. First 'volume' (issues #1-24) focusing on the search for Haigus is very good, but series slowly declines afterwards.

>Overall, reading into Lovecraft after playing Bloodborne made the game even better for me.

Yeah. There's so many common points, some might be coincidence but still pretty interesting. Even gave me some insight on BB's lore, per instances, 'The Festival' got me wondering if the Unseen Village doesn't actually physically transform during the ritual or at least create a very strong palpable illusion like how in the story the narrator sees the village as row of old colonial houses. And then there's some tidbits that are superficial but nonetheless interesting like the Chalice Dungeons are very evocative to some of the imagery present in 'The Rats in the Walls' and 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward', two stories were labyrinthine underground crypts are present. Also, the Watchers in BB match the description of the crypt guardians in The Case of CDW - big, chalk white, rubbery, grotesque humanoids. Another possible point of connection between this last story and BB is regarding Iosefka given how the titular character is snuffed out and replaced.

Then there's the obvious stuff: the Nightmare Frontier borrows heavily from 'Dream Quest of Unknown Kadath' particularly the enemies that are obvious nods to the ghasts and gugs, Fishing Hamlet is a clear reference to 'The Shadow Over Innsmouth' and Arianna's substory with 'The Dunwich Horror' etc etc.

Witchdoctor is very good. It's a horror-adventure with a little bit of comedy and also a parody of a medicine procedural at times. General premise is that possessions, curses and so on are like diseases. Main plot revolves around a Witchdoctor who combats and 'cures' them using magic, rituals, and semi-magical apparatuses.

It's one of the rare books that manages to incorporate Lovecraftian elements without missing the point completely. Book actually puts its own spin on its version of 'the old ones.'

Unfortunately, series went on hiatus before the main over-arching plot could kick in properly, but at least few good one shots and two multi-issue story arcs came out of it.

A bisexual Jew, actually.

The plot is basically him quitting his job as a reporter because he wants to write a book and meet this Lovecraft guy. He travels through New England to Providence, experiencing most of the Lovecraft's famous stories. When he finally meets him, he tells him about it, and Lovecraft writes it down. I think after that he goes on to have buttsex with some faggot in the belfry from "Haunter in the Dark", and the same evening meets some eldritch entity who gives him a blowjob to thank him for setting his plan in motion. Turns out Lovecrafts stories make people believe in this stuff and it brings the end of the world as we know it. We meet the cast from Neonomicon, the FBI agent gives birth to Cthulhu and everything is fucked up forever.

As someone who likes Lovecraft's stories, I really hate what Moore did to him. Poor Howard would be horrified to see this abomination of a comic.

>Moore loves shitting on other creators while barely understanding their work like the pretentious hack that he is

This. Crossed Plus One Hundred is among the worst comics I've ever read. Not only is it filled to the brim with pozz, but Moore insists on writing the dialogue in a completely unnecessary "futuristic" slang that he imagines the English language would evolve (or rather devolve) into after one hundred years. Every line is painful as fuck to read, and includes ridiculous and retarded replacement words, like "stupid" being substituted with "church-face". (Real subtle, Alan.) I never finished the series, but I distinctly remember one scene where Moore uses his shitskin stronk womyn protagonist to go on a butthurt leftist rant against J.R.R. Tolkien.

>>1008062

Back on topic, there are a few really good Japanese Lovecraft adaptations by Gou Tanabe. And before someone tells me to "get back to /a/", I want to emphasize that they have, both artistically and stylistically, more in common with Western comics than run-of-the-mill manga. Not only is the dialogue and writing lifted straight out of Lovecraft, but the art style deliberately imitates Western comics.

Interestingly, Tanabe's comic adaptations (I really don't think the term "manga" does them justice) focus on less famous Lovecraft stories. Currently, there are complete scanlations of Dagon and The Haunter of the Dark, with The Colour Out of Space being worked on right now. Tanabe's adapted several other Lovecraft stories, including "The Outsider" and "At the Mountains of Madness"; the latter which I'm really hoping the scanlators do next.

I binge read the scanlations while listening to some dark ambience. I seriously can't remember the last time I had such a comfy time. (I would highly recommend any album by Flowers for Bodysnatchers, btw.)

The scariest fucking story i ever read in a comic was actually a Donald Duck-comic about Donald Duck and his nephews finding some flute and because Donald Duck being the only one who could play it he won some prize from a shady fellow to go off on a cruise to some unnamed island. Then the twin-brother to the shady fellow shows up and with the nephews goes after Donald Duck on the cruise because it turns out that if they let the shady fellow and Donald play the flute they will awaken some lovecraftian monster from it's sleep and not just destroy the world because it turns out that all of the world itself is just part of it's dream and all the people and all of it is just part of it tentacle-with-eyes-and-weird-limbs-everywhere ridden body. So Donald basically makes the creature half awake and you start to see the little nephews as long with the boat and the world turn into this horrible monster.

It's fucking nightmare-fuel. I still don't understand how they could get away with putting that stuff in a children's comic-book.

Gideon Falls is pretty good, paranoid horror. It's ongoing now, not too far in.

Earlier Hellboy and BPRD are good for action-oriented Lovecraftian horror.

Ice Cream Man is good, but I ma not sure if horror is the best classification for it. It is basically a more surreal Warau Salesman, except that he is more malicious, more hands-on, more of a supernatural entity, and ice cream themed. Each issue is a standalone, but last three seem to have some sort of a minor overarching plot developing.

I think it was terribly received even in japan. I made the mistake of watching the Smashed episode where the animators clearly didn't understand what was happening or the allegory because they animated the characters getting smashed as exploding. Well I say "animated" It was never more than 2 frames and mostly done off screen. They also somehow took ALL the tension out of the ending.

Amigara fault is overdone though. Uzumaki is superior.

Its just that I wanted to see it animated. Or things like "Falling". At least we got "Endless Dream" but it looked bland. I think the only okay one was the voyeur creatures one.

Instead of that stupid self insert fanfic bully, Tomie should have been the ongoing story arc. But overall, Ito material is cursed to be terrible as 2D animation. Gyo was trash as a movie as well. Uzumaki was actually an okay movie, don't know about Tomie.

And now I'm also /tv/, I bet Anon is eating his own shit in angry fat white male rage.

It is pretty hard to overstate how much influence lovecraft actually had since he was decent friends with many authors. Conan and the setting actually take a lot of inspiration from lovecraft since he was friends with the original creator.

He was mostly published posthumously, I think the only thing he had published in his lifetime was "Entombed With The Pharaohs", the story he ghost-wrote for Houdini.

I think August Derlith did most of the cashing in, as well as getting to make his fanfic canon. YES I WENT THERE.

Flinch was a seriously underrated anthology series.

There was one story where, I can't quite remember the details but I think a guy's dad was mugged or attacked or something and left for dead. So the son goes to pick up his dad and while they're driving home the dad goes, "that's the guy, there he is over there, run the bastard over." So the son does without hesitation. Then, about 10 minutes later, his dad sees another guy and says, "That's the guy, run the bastard over."

I did. It was one of the first Shadow comics I read actually.

It was mostly dull, boring and a waste of time.

Maybe there is an interesting idea for a crossover between Lovecraft's mythos and style with The Shadow's own but this comic is just a generic radio episode with a Innsmouth coat of paint.

I recommend Doppleganger. A fairly straightforward comic about an average guy who finds a supernatural being who assumed his identity and stole his life. It is a short and straightforward story, but it's very tight and well done. It's nice to see a horror comic that solely relies on the psychological element and impossibility of facing a vastly more powerful entity rather than relaying on gore and 'everyone's gonna die'.

Every horror story Graham Ingels did for EC Comics horror lines in the 1950s is worth checking out – terrific artwork, and some genuinely eerie and disturbing stories. Look up the collections published by Fantagraphics: Ingels’ original black-&-white artwork on full display without the sub-par colouring of the EC Comics, which were also printed on lower quality paper.

Sanctum is a good horror book. It starts slow, but it is very good at building tension and being a bit Lovercrftian without resorting to cults, fish-men, and tentacles. Story itself is about a submarine crew on an exploratory mission, who stumble upon ancient sunken ruins. They begin to explore and then weird things start happening.

The whole series is two parts awesome, one part rampant faggotry. I don't know what the fuck is wrong with the old wizard these days. It seems like he can't make anything that doesn't, in some horrible way, promote the unholy sport of bum-darts.

One of the more insane parts is where the expy of Ephraim Waite from Lovecraft’s “The Thing on the Doorstep” is inhabiting a 13-year-old girl named Elspeth. "Elspeth" swaps bodies with the protagonist, Mr. Black, then proceeds to rape him with his own body, switching back after and smoking a cig while Black goes completely nucking futs. I'd post it, but it's technically CP. I'm still not sure how Moore got away with it.
