Let's have a thread about the good ol' brown liquid. What whiskies do you guys enjoy and how far down the rabbit hole are you?
Ever since I got introduced to scotch with pic related ive spiraled down into the brinks of whisky and 2 years later ive found myself only buying expensive cask strength independently bottled juice over quantities outside of the occasional Weller or Wild Turkey.

I've always defaulted to Jameson as my sipping whiskey, but as of late I've taken a liking to Bird Dog blackberry whiskey. It is best served cool or cold, and doesn't need a mixer or chaser.

My personal favorite is Knob Creek especially the smoked maple version. The trouble is it is quite expensive.
I started with Jack Daniel's when I was in college but then decided to try out Maker's Mark and then Knob Creek.

For all the fancy stuff I've tried,
I enjoyed Tomatin 15 year the most.
Others were smokier, or had a stronger flavor profile, or a more dramatic finish, or any of that weird shit that makes whisky nuts orgasm out of their nipples… but Tomatin 15 is consistently enjoyable.
I don't ordinarily keep it around, however. I find I drink less if all I have around is JTS Brown, and ever since the divorce, I feel no compelling reason to drink heavily on a daily basis. It can be challenging to find a supplier that stocks a good variety of bottom shelf liquor, but they probably have a good variety of the good stuff, too - and ideally they aren't charging boutique markup on any of it.

It's not exactly top-shelf, but Bushmill's White Label is a pretty smooth Irish whiskey. In my area, you can reasonably expect to pay about thirty for a bottle after the store adds its markup. I haven't had pleasant experiences with the Black or Red Label versions of this stuff, mostly due to their harsher natures and more expensive price points, but your mileage may vary.

If you can get Russell's Reserve 10 year, I think you're doing better bourbon-wise (or at least, not worse), but maybe not as fancy of a bottle.

Eyo Hitlerinos, what´s wrong with JW? Sure, it´s blended and Red Label is really just good for mixing and stuff, but as an entrance? Come on now, not everybody can afford some obscure 30 yo Oirish single malt from which there is only a single cask.
Gonna go over to Black Label soon, it´s supposed to be the superior version of the Red.

Can't speak for other states, but you are legally allowed to produce up to 500 gallons of moonshine per year in my own state as long as you don't distribute it with the intent to turn a profit (E.G. you can "sell" it for the cost of the materials to make it, but you can't sell it for a penny more).

60 euros sounds like a lot. Stupid tariffs.
I think I pay about $25 US for a bottle (750mL), but substantially more for the Russell's Reserve Single Barrel.

I implore you to consider the history Appalachia had with moonshine, especially North Georgia running liquor down to Atlanta. That specific route bore two of the three, the two shine runners, men that created NASCAR.
I bring this up to emphasize, it was a fucking sport to create moonshine, outrun the feds, then deliver it. It doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that the still laws exist solely due to this, and have likely never been updated because everyone stopped caring.
Side note - Atlanta has been gentrifying greatly in the past decade, maybe it won't be so bad in the future.

Straight Bourbon can't have additives. All BiB bourbon is straight bourbon.
I believe, but am not certain, that Straight American Whisk(e)y is not allowed to have additives.
Blends are ok to have additives, but with the good stuff so affordable… why? Pure vodka (Platinum or Pinnacle) is way cheaper if you need a cheap drunk, and rotgut brown liquor isn't really worth it when you can get a pretty decent bottle for about the same price.

At $18/L, yeah… I'm definitely down. I think that works out at like 55 cents a shot.
As for the tasting…. nothing life changing, just darn fine bourbon at a good price. Smells like bourbon, tastes like bourbon, finishes a bit sweet (nothing wrong with that).
