Should a husband and wife only have sex for the purposes of creating a baby? Therefore only having sex a few times every couple years at maximum?

As for Christians sex between husband and wife is not just for procreation - no one anywhere has said that. And there are ways to avoid pregnancy without the use of contraceptives .
Saging because this seems like a less than sincere question

Of course not. The purpose of sex has two purposes: the union of the husband and wife, and procreation. You cannot have one without the other. This is why contraception is an evil. This is also why only having sex to make babies is evil.

Proverbs 5
18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
19 Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
20 And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
21 For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings.
22 His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
23 He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

No. Sex in marriage is primarily to prevent the sins of fornication and adultery. Procreation is secondary.

No, all should be useful for the salvation of one's soul.
The person is not a means for the propagation of nature, this is a materialist idea.

Look at this Chad just arm curling his kid while he leans in for the kiss from his saintly Christian wife. Living the dream.

A husband and wife can have sex whenever they request it, provided they request it in a reasonable place. The issue is when they are using contraception.
The issue with contraception is that it modifies the sexual act into something that doesn't allow it to fulfill its natural purpose. This is why Natural Family Planning and the phenomenon of married pregnant women having sex with their spouses is acceptable and yet, contraception is not.
On a side note, I just wish to state that Christians shouldn't take the anti-contraception message and conclude that they are to have as many children as possible, being like an r-selected specie like rabbits and basically just converting resources into children. No, as a married Christian, your responsibility is to both create and nurture new life. Having too many children will leave you unable to properly raise them and so there is a natural need for things like NFP.

What lies in the distinction between NFP and contraceptive? In both instances one is making a conscious decision to reduce their chances of conception close to 0. I fail to see the difference in strategically having sex in order to mitigate potential of conception and using various methods of birth control. Perhaps its an active action versus a passive one but it seems to me that the same motivation drives someone to abstain from sex on a fertile day as drives someone to wear a condom: they are both trying to avoid pregnancy.
This all being said I can agree on a scientific level that most forms of birth control, especially hormonal ones, are not very good for you and I certainly am not going to use a rubber if I am blessed with a wife some day; I do however want to understand why NFP is okay when other things are not.

Because it's still open to the procreative act. Logically speaking, a contraceptive act is intentionally blocking some channel along that act: hormone blocking, latex condoms, IU implants, etc. exist to INTENTIONALLY prevent pregnancy.
Sex requires a unitive and procreative processes. If the procreative process is still operating naturally (even at her lowest potential fertility) and the unitive is still operating naturally (they're properly 'love-making') then there is no issue.

Sex within marriage doesn't have to be procreative. Its purpose is to prevent sin of fornication and adultery. See >>845014 that link

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. NFP is literal Jew level trickery motivated by non biblical stoicism.
Condoms are non abortifacient and sex is for pleasure.

1 Corinthians 7:1-5
1. Now concerning the things about which you wrote, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2. But because of immoralities, each man is to have his own wife, and each woman is to have her own husband. 3. The husband must fulfill his duty to his wife, and likewise also the wife to her husband. 4. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5. Stop depriving one another, except by agreement for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer, and come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

That is wrong and you would know it if you listened to the Church's teachings. Procreation comes first.

It doesn't. That verse was addressing a different point.
