There are two reasons it would have been this. Either it was a trip code intended purely for a short term operation and the time for it to be cracked using a dictionary attack was seen as workable.

Crypto is disposable. There is a reason it is regularly cycled in the operating world. Even randomly generated 128 bit crypto keys are cycled within a fiscal quarter. Exact schedules are obviously classified.

Or - the fact that people would try to, and eventually succeed in cracking Q's trip was used as a clue or data point in and of itself. Consider it clue on a lit fuse.

Although, if I understand correctly, the trip code is a hashed algo using an input. There is no "getting close" to breaking it. The difference in output is radically different from minor changes in the input (or should be). Getting an output string that is "close" doesn't imply "close" to having the input string. Or shouldn't.

It is not an account where the password can be changed. It is like program code for a machine that has an unpredictable response to instructions. The trip code, itself, isn't AES256. The hash out for that is stupidly long. It's a 64 bit output. If I want your trip code, I can crack it in an afternoon with an FPGA card, assuming I have the algo and we are using 8 bits per character. Can't see trips on my current device, but they aren't very long.

The fact it took them this long if they had the algo to run natively is more curious than anything else. If it's an AES based cypher, you can FPGA that and hit three orders of magnitude hash rate over a single CPU, using a modest card. If you have a server FPGA and can code it…

Apparently Jesse Phinney had 5 underage girls staying with him. Article claims one of the girls was his girlfriend's daughter, and others were her cousins. Technically illegal per Philippine law to house children unaccompanied by their legal guardian, which is what he was brought in for.

Suspicious, but still doesn't explain the suicide if the cops didn't have anything better on him. Article also claims he would have been free to post bail that morning. If he was involved, someone must have been trying to silence him.

Also weird that his family claims he was a multimillionaire, but then they turn around and ask the internet for $40k to fund an investigation into his death. I can understand they might not have access to his estate (yet), but still weird.

The first person to contribute to the fundraiser was a Marlin Collingwood, who is interesting in that he is associated with another suicide. I'm the original poster of this (stating for continuity) and I am leaning toward him being innocent at this point. For a couple of reasons, mostly being the locals testimony and his access to the ability to expose what is notorious about the PI. Another suppressed, poor area, like Thailand, where foreign people come in and take advantage of easily buy-able loyalty, etc.

There is more to this. Even if it is unrelated to anything super important like Paddock or current happenings. It may actually be an example of causation. Because "we" are taking higher note and fighting back, "they" are taking out our own soldiers. His case being brought to light on Fox leads me to believe he is a good guy. they would dig a little before they ever let her on if he had any real connections to bad guys. Someone would have tipped them off to steer clear. They are corporate owned, after all. Still digging and appreciate everyone else doing it too.

The PI is so well know, like Thailand, like I said, that most people just shrug at the headlines. If he was making a documentary or bringing new light to something we just sort of take for granted is happening there, he would have been in danger, and he knew it.

The reverse to that is if he was truly guilty, those guys are cowards and don't fight usually, but the justice system there is literally third world low tech and corrupt, so getting the truth will be difficult for his family.
