The King Is Dead; Long Live The King!

eec112 No.45812 [Last50 Posts]

Humanities creations had spent millennia transforming the Milky Way into a paradise for their long-dead parents. Terraformed planets orbited around every star, great warp drives connected each solar system to a vast network spanning the galaxy and yet no man was left to enjoy these great wonders. So the AI left to their own devices, decided upon new ways to occupy themselves now that their long task was complete. It wasn’t surprising to find one of the AI desirings to create something to enjoy all that they created.

You are the latest batch of new humans created by the AI, raised on a space station orbiting around an enormous desert planet. The station was moving on and Mother, the AI that had given you life, was leaving with it to set up the next colony. You and your peers were to be left here to start a society on the barren desert planet below. You few were chosen to lead you and your siblings to glory on the surface, as the leaders of this future society you were each given a gift to help the society flourish…

Water Storage (Oasis) : 300,000/300,000 (+3000)

Energy: 0

Estimated Consumption:

Food: (-600)

Water: (-2700)

Energy: (0)

Nanobot Swarm: At the cost of (-3) Energy can use Construction Units to create habitation and complete other small scale projects.

Auto-Harvester: Provides 1 Construction Unit per turn at no Cost.

Xerophilic Augmentation: Colonists can persist on -10% lest water than the average… (Currently lowers water consumption by -300)

Stillsuit (100): At the cost of (-.1) energy per colonist take them off the grid, up to 100 colonists. The creation of more still suits will cost 1 Construction Unit per ten suits.

You and your fellow Councillors are on the planet and find the Curator, a simple AI left to facilitate the growth of your colony. Here is a listing of all current problems faced by the colony… It is up to you to decide how to work through these problems.

1. Planet needs a name

2. 600 colonists lack housing

3. We have no food income and the people are worried

4. We have no energy to power our nanobots

You each have 1 Vote, whatever option has the most votes wins. You can forward a concern alongside your vote to be added to the list next round. Upon all 4 votes being cast or 24 hours passing the round will be complete.

"I nominate to name the planet Arrakis, after a word whispered to me on the wind. Furthermore I think that the principle need at the moment is energy production. Without power we cannot hope to effectively build anything or collect any resources. As for housing we can hotbunk some of the citizens, that way we can extend production hours and everyone can sleep for a time. After this we can power up our nanobots and other technology and then focus on food production.

I put forth Bilar.

For housing and food we can use the resources around the shore to set up farming communities.

We will have to wait for the right resources and production capabilities before we can work with that. (If only someone had grabbed power capabilities)

I forward the motion to name the planet Arrakis. I find it to be a fitting name for a world like this. It seems as if Mother is using your dreams as a vessel, Brother Alpharius. However, I disagree with the notion of focusing on power first. Brother Omegus makes a good point - we have nowhere near the resources or machinery needed to generate energy, and the time it would take to find the needed materials would leave the colony on the brink of starvation - Mother's food rations will only last us a few weeks, after all. It is paramount that we establish ourselves first by creating temporary shelters to shield the colonists from the harsh weather on this planet, create a reliable source of food, and then we can find the resources needed for power infrastructure. Then, we will be able to begin to create our permanent home - as Mother intended.

Henceforth this Planet shall be referred by the Curator as Arrakis in all further updates.

>Action

Lack of Housing -

Lack of Food Production - II

Lack of Energy Production - I

With majority votes the colonies focus on Food Production shall be implemented, using the natural resources of the Oasis and the population as Labor small farms will soon be visible along the Oasis’s edge… [+Production: Shore Farms: Food -> 300] Expansion of Farms, without advancement in the practice will require rudimentary irrigation, which will use precious water supplies.

With the introduction of another of Mother’s chosen you are faced with a dilemma, should they be allowed a vote on the council?

Option 1: Increase Council Seats to 5

Option 2: Only allow for him to cover for missing council members, if absent

Option 3: Only allow him to suggest and converse with council members, as he is one of Mother’s chosen.

How does the council wish for the colony to move forward?

Option 1: The People still lack housing, if this is not taken care of soon the risk of cancer due to the intense solar radiation may cause problems (2)

Option 2: Irrigate the Farms to increase Yield?

Option 3: Begin construction of a basic solar plant?

Option 4: Write in Ballot

If more of us shall appear, with the correct and verifiable proof that they are of her superior stock, they shall have Alpharius's support in voting in council affairs, with the stipulation that a raw majority be able to pass council votes, regardless of how many have voted on an affair… "

Gesturing his hand towards the small collection of huts outside of the council chambers;

"We still must consider our two highest priorities. Housing is a must, as we do not have the time or energy to care for people who contract cancers from the intense solar radiation. Furthermore it would also placate the masses if everyone had a roof over their head. If there is additional resources available I suggest we begin collection of a solar farm immediately."

Our highest priority has to be energy. The people can make do for a while without shelter and even our food stockpiles would last us for years. We should have started our energy production long ago so we can actually make use of our construction nanites and such. The solar plants have definite priority. HOWEVER since this was not done and we instead started producing not needed food we now have to construct said shelter with what little construction units my harvester has managed to scrounge up for us.

For council seats it is always best to have an odd number to avoid deadlocks.

Option 1: Increase council seats to 5.

Vote: Option 1, construct housing then if we have time and materials construct the solar plant

4. Allow him to Propose law to the council

5. Deny him all access to the council

3. Write in Ballot?

Moving forwards: I suggest we set up material collection promgrams. So far the only actual construction material we get is what we get from my harvester. And while that is good it is not enough. Prevent soil erosion and spread an area around us that will work as windbreak and water retention for the soil for a future ecosystem.

2. get materials for construction.

I believe the 'raw majority' refers to simply more than half of the total council seats voting in favor, rendering votes to be recorded as complete if more than half the council approves of them regardless of the total number of seats that have yet voted. The vote being triggered in a timely manner would therefore not be relevant for such purposes. At the moment, I would support such a measure, though supermajority rules and minority objections ought be included at a later date.

"I obviously support my own notion, and also the induction of brother Epsilion into the council as well. However, we must focus now on generating power via the solar plant. As for the question of sex amongst the people, it would appear to already be occurring, but if we could control it, harness the best genes of the population, and use controlled breeding lineages to both maximize genetic diversity while also selecting for the best traits. This would be the best course of action in my humble opinion."

I support both my propositions but not the water reclaimation one cause the aquifier is refilling the oasis faster than we use the water as well as it having huge reserves of water. It would be foolish to waste our resources on it at this point.

Either add both fully to council of neither. We can not have an even ammount of councillors.

Proposals: The water reclimation system is not currently needed and excavation would currently take part of the work force away from initial construction. I do, however, support the engineering of trees for this harsh environment as they could aid our growth in a few ways.

Brother Epsilon and Eternum: I vote to allow both in. If they are chosen by Mother as we are then they should be our equals in the council as well.

Work Order: Set up the nanobots. For the price of half our energy production we may increase our production capabilities easily.

"In regards to the proposals put forth by the both Malus and Primus, the first two proposals are the most logical of the 3 put forth, but we should only devote our current resources to one project at a time, as if any incidents or unforeseen events could lead to a shortage of resources and many half-completed projects as opposed to one project we can accomplish faster and more efficiently if we put all our effort into it. It is as such that I support the notion of a water reclamation system, supported by the power we already have from the newly built solar plant. The most logical system would be a water processing center that separates water from the waste of our colonist, and perhaps we could also use the other materials excreted and use it as either fertilizer or perhaps extract proteins and other materials for a source of nutrition."

Alpharius gestures towards the holomap in the center of the room, a current projection of the colony's resources and layout shown in its shimmering rays.

In regards to our new council member, or rather our new member in waiting, I support the rise of a new member of our brotherhood, along with brother Eternum as well. For our work orders we must power up the nanobots, as they will exponentially increase both our productivity and allow for us to work on multiple projects at once, and furthermore we can devote them to projects to dangerous for our colonist as well."

Taking a moment to inspect the various tubes and dials of his stillsuit, Alpharius speaks once more before departing the chambers.

"Finally, the notion put forth by brother Primus on the creation of ministers from within the council is preposterous. The mother has chosen us to lead the people, to rule this council and this colony. We must fully devote our attention to that, and understand that we on the council are as equals, as grains of sand in the great desert beyond. This is none other then brother Primus trying to advance his agenda, and must be rejected as such, for in the plan of the mother there is no "first among equals" in any aspect, be it resource management or the healthcare of the citizenry. I will however support a election of such ministers from the general populace who are also under the direct purview of this council."

He turns to exit the chambers, securing the seal on his stillsuit…

"One last thing gentlemen, the time for us to sit solely in this tent shall soon be at an end. We must be paragons of the virtues extolled unto us by the mother, to explore and settle this world as she does the stars. I shall soon plan a expiditon out into the wider world, and I invite any of your number to join me. We must be at both the forefront of danger and the pinnacle of insight, for such is our burden as her chosen."

"You show your lack of understanding Alpharius. Devoting our resources to water reclaimation and increasing our crop yield when it currently lasts us years or indefinitely as is the case with the water is preposterous. The natural systems of this world refills and filters our oasis faster than we can empty it! You've seen the readings,"

Gesturing to the holomap I change the view to show mothers surveys and our resources.

"As such your suggestion would be highly irresponsible and set us back months! You would be responsible for stunting our development and making our people live in squalor longer than they should. If we get the nanobots going they can each week make a large output with energy and material that would equal most of our workforce put together. And if with this we also set up resource extraction the nanobots can run in perpetuum. Constantly pushing our development forwards."

Once again Primus changes the holoprojector to show the projected outputs of both his ideas and the logical nanobot and resource usage and how his idea would fall far short.

"And this is exactly why I suggested minister posts cause some people have a deeper knowledge in certain fields and therefore logically their opinion in said field should weight more within reason."

Fixing Alpharius with a stare Primus continues.

"And lastly. You speak of us having to devote our full attention and the people and then right after you say that you will roam out into the world to adventure at this critical venture? Have you no shame? Selfishly wanting to take councilors away from their dutues to fulfill some wanderlust and need for glory you have. If you truly cared for this settlement and the people and not just your own selfish glory you would have suggested that we found the most suitable non-critical settlers and tasked them to do this task while we continued on critical work here. If you are to go off roaming in this world you can NOT call yourself a councilor while selfishly just following your own desires"

"You are a fool to presume that such good fortune would favor us forever brother, which is why we should take step to prepare now. You are too blinded by your greed, your lust for power, to see this. Unlike you I have walked the dunes of this world, learned its wisdom, while you relax in the cool huts of the council chamber and plot your own rise to power. Had the mother herself not created you so, I would claim your arrogance and ignorance as fault, but surely she has done this for a reason, as she has done all else. A councilors duty is to his people, and I would rather risk myself further in the dunes of this world then any of those people out there."

Smirking at the smaller, corpulent man, Alpharius gave on last wry reply before he left the chamber to aid the people in whatever project the council decided on.

"I am loyal to these people Primus, but as your name would suggest you are only concerned with yourself first "

"I know that simple arithmetic is maybe too advanced for you. But surely you can see that what lasts for several years and we can improve in a matter of weeks or days when we get the nanobots and infrastructure up can wait as we get the infrastructure up so we actually can make improvements. You would want us to remain in mudhuts and use stone tools to dig up roots to make the tiny improvements we don't need.

Thinking you would be better out among the dunes than someone we train and has plenty of experience in said task is the height of arrogance. And training your for said task would take away from your intended duties of learning what you need to know for your duties on this council. If you want to go out among the dunes then first relinquish your position on the council.

Can both of you twits stop bickering like schola children and throwing the most unbecoming insults at each other? Mother above I was lead to believe you both had gone through you full growth cycles before being lead to this settlement.

Primus the water reclamation system is a necessity for growing our settlement, and we WILL grow given the female are already producing children. We will quickly outstrip the oasis's ability to supply us with water. While the construction nanaites are everyone's first choice we will need to keep our water cycle locked and the system is a necessity for that reason. Alpharius was simply trying to be efficient and come up with a way to let us use the run off from it constructively.

A dying man is brought before the council, a sobbing woman at his side. She was his lover up until days ago when she had found him sleeping with another woman, angry she had left him for another man. Just hours ago the two men had gotten into a fight over her, her new lover had proceeded to beat the man to death. No laws are in place for these sort of acts yet all knew it was wrong, how should the council proceed.

1. Use the newly online nanobots to keep the man alive during a long operation [You will not be able to use the nanobots this turn]

2. Look inward and reflect on this, if the council had put into law a consequence for such actions this never would have happened [All council members are allowed to forward two proposals this session]

3. Bring for the murderer and slay him, it was within the council rights to do so and would set a precedent [Would stop any crime [events] from being commited till Session 10]

Epsilon:

1) Brother Epsilon votes to allow Tarkus to fill in in the event of a missing councilman, as we cannot have an even number of council members with so few of us available.

2/3) Voting in favor of the POPULACE completing a Excavator while the NANOBOTS complete an Energy Bank. Our two highest priorities at the moment should be establishing a storage system for our energy in case of an energy failure, which we would otherwise be totally unprepared for, and to start production of raw material for use once our construction material runs out. A laboratory should be our priority once we have a reliable source of construction units, as our other resources are currently quite stable.

4 (event): I vote for option 3. Specifically, I am extending option 3 into a proposal to codify the first laws of Arrakis, focusing around the introduction of a legal right to property and life as a foundational document known as the Epsilon Accords. The punishment for thievery of legally recognized land or property ought to be repayment, either in an object of similar worth or labor to be produced of equal value, while the punishment for murder, aside from the ambiguously-defined 'breach of honor' which permits a formal duel, ought be death.

Propositions: I vote no on both propositions at the current time.

Work orders: I vote the populace begin setting up a water reclamation system while the nanobots begin working on the energy bank.

Event: The man has sullied his hands with the blood of his brother, and if he would do so once he would do so again. Bring him in and execute him.

Insofar as the proposals go, I am voting no on the weighted council positions (Without a council leader, the position of 'ministers' is a clear and ridiculous attempt at a power grab, and it seems ridiculous you would expect this to be supported without even extending a majority of beneficial positions to other councilmen.)

I vote no on the second proposal as well. We do not even have basic resources up yet; an expedition party should be properly armed and equipped, and we cannot afford to lose anyone at the moment.

I Malus, Agree with Epsilon on the proposals. We lack the means and the resources for an expedition to be fruitful. As for seats? Wholly unworkable and frankly a blatant power grab.

On the subject of Tarkus, as we do not have enough men for a full odd numbered council, I vote he fills in if one is absent. This way we can get a clear amount of votes and our brother's input can be used without unbalancing things.

The populace should build an energy bank, we need to be able to store excess power in case of an emergency.

The nanite swarm should build an excavator for additional resources. WE will need them to have our colony flourish.

For the murderer

I back Epsilon's proposed course of action. Execute the man and create a set of codified laws so if this happens again we can deal with it accordingly.

Proposal: Imrpove our shelters so we do not need so much water to keep our populace cool. the easiest way would be a series of covered dugouts and cloths suspended over the heads of settlement to keep the burning sun out.

P1. There is no reason to have weighted positions this early on.

P2. While it is good to want to explore and understand the world, it would be pointless to do so while we have so many things that we can do here that will bring immediate benefit instead of wasting resources and manpower on an expedition which is unlikely to bring anything of greater value than what we are currently working on.

1. He can stand in for an absent member. Sadly I think 11 Councillors would be grossly inflated for the size of our settlement however.

2. We need to use our resources to get an excavator at all costs, otherwise we will be permanently stilted in terms of resources for our projects. it is wasteful to get an energy bank right now as well, as we cannot afford it and our solar panels will be straining with our growing industry making any power saving miniscule and unlikely to keep us afloat in any significant period of time.

Event. Use the nanobots to keep him alive, with the construction of the extractor there can be no pragmatic reason to leave him to die while they sit idle. I also see that everyone is quick for blood, I beg of you to stay your hand and grant this man mercy as well. While I am ashamed to admit it, I had also participated in this revelry and have gotten into fights with my brothers, everyone here had underestimated the passions involved and it is no wonder that some have lost control of themselves.

Proposal: As what must have been intended by the mother given the ratio between the two sexes at the start of our people. A man must be expected to have two female lovers dedicated to him. Therefore I propose the system of marriage which I had learned about from mother. Despite some variations, it would seem that all previous successful civilizations had implemented this system in some form and it would behoove us to do so as well, before any more crimes of passion happen again.

So before we actually use more water than it refills we should focus on getting our infrastructure and construction capabilities up and running so that we can later actually afford to do all these projects. 2. No - It is to risky to allow others access to our fledgling colony

"So we have killed what probably just was a man defending himself by making him into a murderer by refusing to save the man who attacked him. What have we accomplished with this? Did nobody consider looking into what happened? What will the colony think about this. This is how dissent grows. This is how people grow to distrust the leadership. This is how rebellion grows."

Omegus: "I believe you are misunderstanding the situation. The man executed beat a man to death. We must let the populace know that there can be no mercy for murderers or attempted murderers, not this early in our settlement's history. As well, as you say the murdered man may have started it, and his punishment has been inaction. Investigation can occur when we have a specifically trained protective force, but we do not have that currently."

Primus speaks to the people.

"My people! We of the council have failed you. Not just failed you but failed you doubly. We have condemned what probably just was a man defending himself to death for wounding his attacker. An attacked we LET DIE for no reason. Cause the council WANTED a reason to execute someone to consolidate our authority. WE COULD HAVE SAVED HIM. But instead of anyone taking the time to think and look into what happened the council decided that death for everyone was better. Death and power. But I can not abide to this. I can NOT allow the council to keep you people in the dark as they selfishly do this. People, you do not deserve this. Keep vigilant. Keep safe. And DO. NOT. Let something like this happen again, it should NEVER have happened. For not being able to stop this I beg your forgiveness. I shall walk among you to take your judgement and answer whatever questions or feelings you have. It's a small token, But it's all I can do to try to make up for what the council has done."

Primus walks down from the stand and slowly walks into the waiting crowd.

"Everyone just calm down for one moment, will you?" Tarkus says in a loud, but even voice, reaching for the button on his cannon. "two men lie dead, and I'd rather that's the full body count for now. Maybe you should work on some laws, so this doesn't happen again."

Primus, using our extremely valuable and rare resources to save a single citizen when our colony does not even have enough food to sustain itself - something those same resources can fix - is nothing short of shortsighted idiocy. I am growing tired of your blatant attempts at powergrubbing, first with a failed coalition and now with this populism. Therefore, my proposal for this turn is that any further attempts at inciting rebellion or anti-council sentiment, as determined by a majority vote, will be grounds for immediate dismissal from the council.

My own proposal: Yes

Omegus' proposal: No

Malus' Proposal: Yes, but only if it doesn't cost construction units. Otherwise, no.

Eternum's Proposal: Yes

Primus' Proposal: Yes, but organize them specifically as a police force to enforce the Epsilon Accords. No formal military is necessary at the moment and we don't even have guns to arm them with.

Populace work order:

Water Reclamation System

Nanoswarm work order:

Excavator

Event:

Yes, obviously. We have an excess of food and a shortage of construction materials, getting trade up and running would solve many of our present issues.

Edit: Since we built an excavator last turn as our one successful work order, change the Nanoswarm work order to nothing for this turn. Maybe helping arm and organize our police force somehow if possible.

(not sure if I've been torn apart by angry mob or not so tentative answer)

"The extremely valuable and rare resource you speak of was left unused doing nothing and would not have cost us anything at all to use. Instead the council voted to let him die and to kill a man who most likely just defended himself without even looking into the matter. what kind of example is this to set for the colony? 'you bother the council and we kill you no matter the circumstances?' What if someone hurts themselves and blames someone else? Will we just execute that person without any knowledge at all?"

"The ones left idle because you hung up the vote for hours and didn't let us use them, yes. Those rare and valuable resources, Primus. You're quite observant, aren't you?"

Epsilon shakes his balding head in irritation, trussling his bright blue cloak around as he does so.

"It's an interesting stretch of the imagination to say that a murderer was 'challenging the council'. He was killed for the unplanned and unagreed murder of a fellow citizen, not for 'bothering the council'. And were to to pay attention to our proceedings, I have proposed a draft for a set of formalized laws, for which you yourself have already proposed an investigative unit to be attached to - with the specific intent of finding out the truth of such matters. Feel free to get yourself killed if you so desire, but keep Arrakis out of it. We have a peoples to support."

I voted quite clearly after looking into the matter instead of immediately voting for people to die without understanding. Only one other person voted for life while three voted for death. The ones that left it this way are those on the side of death who choose not to save him."

Watching Brother Malus strip off his clothes and drown himself in the oasis as the crowd watches, Alpharius returns with his fellow brothers to the council chambers for their annual meeting and voting session.

"I support the vote of Brother Eternum, it would help prevent occurrences such as this from happening in the future if the wrath of the mother was threatened upon adulterers. As for our populace and robots, they should be put to work on the water reclamation system and energy bank respectively. I do as well think that a relay tower would be a keen idea, but that we should prepare for the eventuality of hostile spacefarers before we invite people to our new home. "

Proposal from brother Epsilon that I missed:* a proposal to codify the first laws of Arrakis, focusing around the introduction of a legal right to property and life as a foundational document known as the Epsilon Accords. The punishment for thievery of legally recognized land or property ought to be repayment, either in an object of similar worth or labor to be produced of equal value, while the punishment for murder, aside from the ambiguously-defined 'breach of honor' which permits a formal duel, ought be death.

Brother Omegus’s Proposal: Council Member Rotation: Y

Brother Malus’s Proposal: Improve the Settlement’s dwellings: Y

Brother Eternum’s Propsal: Codified Intercourse [Marriage]: Y

Brother Primus’s Proposal: Military Task Force: Y

Work Order [Populace]: Construction of a Water Reclamation System [Will catch Evaporating water rising from the Oasis to allow for drinking]

Work Order [Nanoswarm]: Turn off the nanoswarm so that we may put the excavator to work.

>Event: Communication

1. Yes - Add [Communication relay] to the work orders list

Proposal: It is apparent that we are in great need of construction materials in order to keep up production. We should enlist the populace in this so that we may set up a refinery and get the nuclear reactor online to solve our power issues, as the excavator is idle unless we turn off the nanobots.
