24e2c7 No.29073 [View All]

The year is 1550. Spring.

Once, the clans of Japan cooperated, more or less peacefully, with the laws of the Emperor– and more importantly, with the laws of the Ashikaga Shogunate. In recent decades, however, the over-mighty clans have ceased to listen to the dictates and ramblings of the vestigal shogunate, and Japan's many warlords have given little more than lip service. Five years ago, the Ashikaga were driven from Kyoto entirely, reduced to exiled puppets… until now.

Ashikaga Yoshiteru has returned from exile, and his loyal supporters have bloodlessly taken back Kyoto. Yoshiteru wants the humble and gracious daimyo of Japan to know one thing above all– the Ashikaga hold the reins of power, and their word is law.

Some lords and samurai have fallen in line and obey the dictates of the Shogun. Others refuse to suspend their bids for power and prestige, continuing to war with their neighbors. And some, it is said, quietly and not in the Shogun's presence, want to take Kyoto for themselves, and seize control of Japan accordingly.

In the next fifty years, Japan's future will be decided. What part you play, how you will be remembered– that is up to you.

RULES: http://pastebin.com/GpizRZCE

CHARACTER SHEET:

DAIMYO NAME: Your clan name and your adult given name, in that order.

CLAN: Your clan of origin and whether or not you are a Vassal to an existing Great Clan. Being a Vassal gains you additional forces to call upon and protection from your Lord and his allies.

BACKGROUND: Your upbringing, your goals, who you are and why you do what you do. Your background will determine your honor, your starting forces and your traits.

DOMAINS: The provinces you hold. Provinces are rated 1-5, with 1 representing an almost defenseless backwater and 5 representing a highly developed, highly fortified province. Pick from one of the provinces with black squares. Also pick a color to represent you and your clan.

HONOR: Your Honor rating, from 0 (Honorless) to 6 (Incorruptible). Honor affects diplomacy, the threshold for critical failures/successes, and the interactions with the people of your domains. Honor is determined by your background and your actions throughout the game.

FORCES: Your standing forces. These are divided up between you and your generals, if you have any, or can be stationed without a general at a specific province.

FAMILY: Brothers, daughters, sons. Sons (first) and brothers (second) can take up leadership of the clan if your Daimyo is killed, and can also lead parts of your army into battle. Daughters can be married off to other clans to solidify alliances, or traded as hostages to ensure a peace treaty is kept. You can have up to three relatives; taking fewer relatives gives you more Abilities on a one-for-one basis.

ABILITIES: Your personal skills and talents. You start with 2 abilities chosen from the list.

AGENTS: Monks, inspectors, ninja and courtiers bound to your cause.

TRAITS: Unique bonuses and penalties determined by your background.

He even studied abroad for a time at the behest of his brother, learning how to make foreign siege equipment and fortifications.

Gifted with knowledge from two worlds, he worked hard and loyally for the family of the Bungo province, building up the region, earning a reputation of being hardworking and knowledgeable. He earned the favor of the local Lord who had no brother or sons to his own, until he was named his heir on his deathbed. Now Lord of his own clan, Kenshu seeks to bring prosperity for the families of both himself and his brother, and plans to use his skills as a law scholar to good effect ensuring trade with the Nanban Barbarians goes unhindered.

INABA CHIKAYOSHI: 3115 TOTAL General's Bodyguard, 100 Katana Cavalry, 100 Yari Cavalry, 200 Katana Samurai, 200 Bow Samurai, 300 Ashigaru Spears. CAVALRY ADVANTAGE: NEGATED BY SPEARS/POSITIONING. +10 COMMANDER. MORALE: EAGER.

99 + 10 + 2

111 TOTAL

111 VS 138

The Yamato light their fire arrows and begin to torch the Inaba encampment, seemingly forcing the sleeping soldiers there out into the open– however, your men note that there are not nearly as many soldiers as there should be for an encampment of this size, and though the spare tents mean that it will burn that much faster, where are the rest of their men?

This question is answered when a Cavalry charge comes hurtling down from the eastern hills, and they're backed by the other half of the Inaba infantry– both forces begin closing in under a blistering hail of arrows both hastily made and pre-constructed.

The Yamato, however, are ready; working in complete sync, thanks to months of drilling, the ashigaru ranks move into place and set up a spearwall just as the cavalry make their charge– the steepness of the hill meant that they could go nowhere else. The air is quickly filled with the screams of men and horses as the cavalry plows through the first few ranks before being bogged down and slaughtered. The Inaba force from the camp is broken and jumbled by charges from the strange chariots, though many of said charioteers find themselves simply cut down by Inaba arrows. The chariots wheel around for another go as the main bodies of the two forces meet, fighting on and around the skewered, disemboweled bodies of horses and their samurai riders.

It's a grim affair, but, before long, it is over: the Yamato siege engines, kept safe thanks to the spear-wall, land an almost direct hit on the Inaba general's bodyguard, wounding him. They have no choice but to sound the retreat, and they do so, leaving behind mountains of dead and a victorious Yamato force!

YAMATO: LOSE 8 CHARIOTS. LOSE 250 ASHIGARU SPEARS. LOSE 180 ASHIGARU BOWS. LOSE 20 BOW SAMURAI. LOSE 8 YARI SAMURAI.

YOU HAVE SUCCESSFULLY BEATEN BACK THE INABA ARMY, WHICH IS ON ITS WAY TO THE CAPITAL– AND CAN BE CAUGHT NEXT TURN IF YOU MARCH YOUR MEN RAGGED.

You arrive several miles out of the capital of Musashi, which has been locked down and fortified. Yon tells you that there is an Uesugi army moving south, towards the capital, to reinforce the already bloodied army that resides there– both consist mostly of monks and samurai, seeming to favor quality over quantity. The same man you have been warring with is at the head of the army in the capital; one of Kenshin's sons is at the head of the other army. With a Takeda presence at the border, also moving south, it is unlikely that the Uesugi will be leaving the capital undefended anytime soon.

1. Your chiding goes over quite well with your neighbors, and the Ashikaga are pleased. You hear that the Imagawa delegate simply glared balefully at your delegate in the court proper.

2/3. Your fire tactics work swimmingly, and for your troubles, you get some spare supplies in the wreckage of the camp. Though, unfortunately, setting it all ablaze has destroyed any intelligence or correspondence…

24e2c7 No.34698

Summer, 1556. The Hattori, Yamato, Oinishi, Konishi, Chosokabe, Uesugi, Matsu, and Date clans have all issued scathing rebuttals of the Imagawa's behavior.

The Tokugawa, Takeda, Hojo, Saito, Hatakeyama and Mori all, with varying levels of tact and aggression, defend the Imagawa's brutish actions. This has led to war, in fact, only miles from Kyoto, as the Hattori sieze upon the chance to expand by attacking the Hatakeyama.

The Shimazu, for their part, have flat out refused to give a decision one way or another. The Otomo and Oda remain silent.

The Ashikaga themselves are reluctant to actually encourage war, however, for doing so risks offending the most powerful alliance of clans in Japan…

DAIMYO NAME: Akakawatani Nobuyuki

CLAN: The Akakawatani is one of the numerous clans of 16th century Japan, with a number of samurai and Ashigaru in their employ. The current head of the clan, Daimyo Nobuyuki, seeks to restore his clan to the glory it once held before its crushing defeat in the Ōnin War, where its lands were razed and seized as the then Daimyo sat in a siege in Aki. Now, finally able to marshal but a fraction of their old strength, they seek to rebuild, and to take vengeance on those who betrayed them.

BACKGROUND: Raised in a castle from the young age, and taught in the ways of politics and intrigue by his father, Akakawatani Nobu. He was sent to Edo at the age of 15, where he met a friend he would cherish for the rest of his life. This bear of a man, the same age as Nobuyuki , hailed from a far off land known as "Scotland" and when he talked, it sounded like a cannonade going off. There time in Edo was spent as guards for Nobuyuki's two sisters, in the city for a courting event with a southern clan, which promised to bring much wealth to the family, along with a few political ones as well. Unfortunately, a rival clan which desired the southern clan's male for their own daughter sought fit to kill the other women in the Heir's life. It was a daring attack in broad daylight as the young lady went to a supposed rendezvous with the young lordling, only to be beset on all sides by a group of ronin payed to end her life. In the end, the household guards were slaughtered to a man, with only Nobuyuki and the Scotsman still standing. The ronin laid dead in the streets, and due to the nature of the attack, Nobuyuki's father saw fit to recall his children from the city, he'd rather risk offending the southern clan then having no children to offer any clan. This was Nobuyuki's first taste of violence, but it would not be his last. Devils from the North, the Nanban barbarians, desired what little wealth the Akakawatani clan possessed, and for much of Nobuyuki's early 20's, he was fighting the savages side by side with his father, until the fateful day he died, not by the barbarians, but by the errant shot of a Clan Yabusame. Now we stand poised at the current date, Nobuyuki only taking the title of Daimyo a few months ago, and the country tetters on the brink of civil war. With his trusty friend known only as "The Scotsman" and his loyal followers by his side, he knows that his clan shall make it through these trying times, and who knows, maybe Nippon could benefit from a Akakawatani Shogunate.

By any means necessary, we must get our hands on silk. Either through a trade deal with the ones who grow it, or, preferably, access to silk worms.

I want to know if we have options for this. Perhaps a shogunate approved inspection of the worms, or some kind of marriage or trade deal, but getting the worms or the silk is my top priority. What options are available to us? Perhaps diplomacy might be used here.

1/2. Quarry 6/8. As the year marches onward, the work on the Quarry expands further and further…

3. Hyuga is currently ruled by the Ito, who have grown weak and desperate after continuous warring and fighting with the powerful Satsuma to the south. They are united only in their disdain for the Shogunate and for their Nanban-loving northern neighbors, and ruled by Ito Yoshisuke, a warlike man possessed of a hearty heir by the name of Suketaka. Their fortifications are strong, but their armies and grain stores are exhausted from the unending tide of Shimazu assault. They refuse to deign with you and your men, but, apparantly, there is a not insubstantial number of Christians living in oppression within the province of Ito… and it is likely that they will be more than eager to see a change of hands, especially one that is more welcoming of the word of the Lord…

That all the Ito's strength is focused on holding the Shimazu back is beyond fortuitous, or so your man Joshu advises you.

>>34725

1. You have finished your [Sake Brewery], and can now export large quantities of alcohol, as well as providing such libations dirt-cheap to your own people. Surely, they will be quite happy with this…

2. Pottery Maker 5/6. All that remains to be done is find more experienced workers for the complex and you can then make your wares.

3. Ichihisa lays before you a map: the Hatakeyama, firmly entrenched in the provinces bordering Kyoto, have a stranglehold on the export and import of silk. Musashi, which has been claimed by the Uesugi and is now the site of warring between themselves and the mighty Takeda, was the single biggest exporter of silk but has now had its trade output drastically reduced by multiple raids. The Chosokabe -had- a silk growing operation underway that was razed by the rebels out of Sanuki.

It is likely that you may be able to appeal to the Chosokabe– who have very much worn out their welcome in the courts and are still in need of aid– by offering them leverage or supplies. You would otherwise be able to marry into the good graces of the Hatakeyama, but the lack of daughters or sons you possess means that this is a nigh impossibility, and the Hatakeyama are in no position of political weakness. The Uesugi may be willing to cut you some measure of silkworms and some people who are skilled in sericulture for less than a marriage, for doing so would weaken the tight hold the Hatakeyama have, but Ichihisa has no idea what they may want in return. Then there is the Nanban trade to be had with the Goto islands in the Korea Strait– but the Otomo have an absolute monopoly on that, and it would take much ingratiating to get them to let you in on the trade, which, by the way, will only grant you the finished product.

Five options, then, lie in front of you. Try to squeeze the Chosokabe for what silkworm stocks they have left. Find a way to get in good graces with the Hatakeyama. Bargain with the Uesugi for some of their stores. Petition the Otomo to let you trade silks in the Goto Islands. Or, most daringly, try to directly petition the Shogun, who can easily force any of the above clans to relinquish some of their stocks so that you may start your own silk farms.

Angered at the constant drilling and practicing, some of your Ashigaru have left with the equipment given to them and started causing trouble throughout the countryside. Squashing them should be a trivial matter, but if such piggish behavior is left to fester…

1. Your men get you an exotic pet, alright. You stride out of your tent to behold a bear cub, scarred and tied up with rope. They found this little guy being sold at a black market out of Hokkaido, and soon, given the proper diet, he will grow into a massive terror!

Gain Bear Cub. You can name him as you wish. It will take him a year to mature into a flesh-rending terror of a beast, but since he's so young, you can make sure he views you as… not food.

2. Yon and Bayushi leave. Yon returns several weeks later as your march is underway, and informs you that the Uesugi are planning a pincer move, and had expected you to hunt the reinforcements down. You ask for Bayushi and the status of their mission, but he merely smiles.

3. You march out to fight the reinforcements, and, soon, you come face-to-face with them. And you also come back-to-face with the Uesugi army out of the capital, which has come to crush you like the villainous insect you are. Fortunately for you, they are led by a highly inexperienced commander… for their general and his advisors have all been quietly assassinated days prior.

1. Military Port 9/10. Alas! Only a single dock remains to be put on your port– but your men insist that, without it, the Kami may be offended by declaring the port "operational" ahead of schedule…

2. The summer goes by, and your peasants, unfortunately, are too busy mulling about in the muggy heat to do… -anything-.

3. Apparantly, Nobuyuki had erred in personally showing up to assist the Quarry's construction. The entirety of the peasant workforce busies themselves with making sure he and his retinue are refreshed, safe, and properly taken care of, and though some of the Ashigaru commit to assisting, the Samurai flatly refuse to stoop to such level, even risking the threat of ordered seppuku to do so!

In the end, work stalls on the Quarry…

>>34773

1. Hiruishi seems to respond well to the visit from Einoishi's sensei, reinvigorated somewhat by his tutelage and inspirational words. For now, the boy remains somewhat gloomy, but, at last, focused on the task at hand: building up the clan's glory.

2. Gain 50 Firebomb Throwers. +250 Force.

3. The Fumetsu peasantry get to work on the mines, toiling away day after day. However, one blustery morning, their work is rudely interrupted by a great rumbling and trembling beneath the earth.

Suddenly, the half-finished tunnels of the mine cave in as an earthquake strikes, and many peasants are killed, if not by the cave-in then also by the accompanying landslides, fissures and urban devastation that comes with the earth's trembling.

When the dust settles, it seems that there is work to be done on the mines– they have suffered quite the setback.

But worse. Some of Kaga's peasants and lower class view the earthquake as a sign from the heavens– punishing them for straying from the Ikko faith. Your carefully laid propaganda seems to show cracks just as the earth does, and word reaches you of another resurgence of militant Ikko.

Fall, 1556. Devastation abound as an earthquake strikes central Honshu, devastating Kaga and causing quite the uproar throughout the region.

The Otomo have voiced their disapproval of the Imagawa, perhaps, some have theorized, just to irk the Mori. The Oda finally give their piece as well: they, too, condemn the Imagawa, drawing the direct ire of the clan in question and their directly neighboring vassals. The issue of Imagawa impudence has borne at least some bloody fruit: the lord of the Saito has been killed by his adopted son at Nagaragawa, and Saito Yoshitatsu declares his absolute disgust with the Imagawa and their policies.

In more pleasant news, blue kimonos are now hot fashion.

DAIMYO NAME: Matsu Noritaka

CLAN: The Ashikaga Shogunate have returned to their place of power. Great splendor and power are theirs. Still the overmighty clans do not obey. The time has come once again for a new warlord to become Shogun, but who will be victorious. Matsu lands have always provided for our people, our enemies are many and envious, they threaten our borders and look for any weakness. The honor of a Matsu is never in question, unyielding in battle and out they stand firm as the mighty oak. Their skills in swordsmanship are unquestioned and few survive a duel with a Matsu samurai. Let other clans use paltry tricks and frivolous novelties, the Matsu shall forever embody the spirit of the sword. Bishamonten, the war god, Awakes once more, now is the time to defeat our enemies. All will bow to the Matsu clan, we wait no longer. Destiny Calls!

BACKGROUND: Matsu Noritaka was raised as every heir of the Matsu clan was raised, with sword in hand and training every day since he could speak. With the concept of honor and swordsmanship drilled into him from a young age he has grown into being an exemplary leader of the Matsu people. When he was 15 he fought and won an honor duel against his own brother who grew jealous of his status as heir and his betrothed. As with all duels of the Matsu clan it ended in the death of his brother. With the return of the Shogunate and the stirrings once more of war Noritaka has decided that he has had enough of the Matsu clan being forced to bow to the whim of the Ashikaga, the honorless dogs will bow to the Matsu, as will every clan.

However, your gruesome features and terrifying demeanor don't do you too many favors: you take a penalty to diplomatic actions, and your men are more easily bribed or coerced. Additionally, your frailty gives you a -20 to personal combat, and you have a lower chance of surviving battle wounds.

1+2:Finalize the construction on both Awachi's Trading Port [7/10] and the mighty Shiro [10/12].

3. Unfortunate news. Any sign of wavering is, of course, weakness, and allowing a rebel faction to exist for more than a moment is foolish. The rebels must be handedly crushed, and an example made of them. Such swift and effective justice to traitors should prove both an effective encouragement for the honor and just rule of the Awachi, and a method to discourage further efforts.

DAIMYO NAME: Oinishi Kenshu

CLAN: Oinishi of Bungo, Sister branch of the Konishi Clan of Higo

BACKGROUND: Son of a wealthy merchant in Higo province, where as his eldest brother took up the family name and business of becoming a merchant, Kenshu realized he had to help his family in a separate way.

Every successful merchant family had this advantage, suucessful integration with law and politics and someone with a good education. Kenshu traveled far and wide to the various schools of Japan, studying law, architecture, construction, and other practical skills.

Kenshu is known to have a love of infrastructure and reading, and it is said in his home he has a vast library of scrolls and even foreign books, as well as a small model of the Bungo Castle.

DOMAINS: Bungo, Level 2 - [Rice Paddies] [Coastal Village]

HONOR: 3

FORCES: 1595 Total - General's Bodyguard, 20 Yari Cavalry, 100 Yari Samurai, 100 Bow Samurai, 200 Ashigaru Spears, 20 Firebomb Throwers.

ABILITIES:

[Nanban Knowledge] - It is possible for you to try and negotiate, even trade, with the Nanban barbarians. You must own a coastal province to have this ability

[Architect] - It is easier to build up and maintain infrastructure

[Siegesmith] - You can construct and recruit Siege Units– Mangonels, Firebomb Throwers, Cannons, Fire Rockets

AGENTS: Ichihisa, Inspector, [Manor Handmaidens]

TRAITS: [The Merchant Lord] - Moneymaking and trade comes easy to you, and accordingly, you gain a bonus to hashing out trade agreements, locating resources, and targeting enemy trade routes both militarily and by way of court and law. However, while they are willing to trade with you, the other clans are not willing to trust you due to your relations with your gaijin-loving sister branch. You take a penalty to negotiating peace treaties, alliances and the like.

Man cannot eat silk or silk worm, he needs food. Begin negotiations to aquire silk worms and silk worm handler(s). Having no experience ourselves we have to insist on also having at least one or several persons who know how to handle and raise silk worms.

12 Preparations for Hyuga Campaign.

Send scouts ahead with extra mounts and jackets to explore the landscape; we will want to know the best ways to approach their Capital, have a passing familiarity with the ground and retrieve Joshu.

In their dire situation they may try to harry my supply line to stall me or to feed their own soldiers so I must envision the road's points where we could be ambushed and mark them on my map as regions of risk and inform my officers of the possibility so they can take preparations of their own.

The oppressed Christians and common folk will no doubt be feeling lean providing grain for their Warlord and enduring the Winter so we should trade with Oinishi for some Grain and Grain Seed that we can use to feed Hyuga for a season and win their hearts to God's cause. Guns for Grain. If we secure enough then we should also increase the portions of our soldier's rations during the campaign.

I expect this to come to a siege for a number of apparent reasons. I should starve them out and employ Joshu to spread some demoralizing text to encourage the Ito soldiers to desert the army.

Brother I write to you now that I have plans to fulfill my military ambitions in the coming Spring and hope you can aid my trade and preparations. Congratulations are in order as I hear your pottery has surpassed even the Chinese and Korean artisans I hope to get some pots for Christmas.

3 Research Supply Line Defense Strategy. With our nanban wagons I believe I can invest some bow samurai, guns and defensive equipment inside the wagons where they can have cover and sight of any attacks and still fit a sufficient amount of supplies.

More importantly, I intend to supply you with food and your men some Sake, that should raise their spirits before a battle. The gift of guns is most welcome.

>I accept this trade of additional Guns for some of my excess Rice

More than guns brother, I am interested in military assistance. Particularly, I wish to study your Nanban style Wagons myself that my own forces might use them. I hear the Nanban have learned how to even used them to strengthen the force of their Ashigaru.

Have you noticed something about the Nanban? I had been studying their history for some time now. There is a shift in the Nanban in a much heavier and intelligent use of Ashigaru among them.

In older times, the clans of the Nanban relied on their armored Samurai, "Knights" as they called them, who also fought with honor and bravery for their lords. There was a great battle in a land known as "Agincourt", 100 years ago, where the Nanban used well trained Bow and Spear Ashigaru to defeat a larger force of Samurai. Since that day, the Nanban no longer rely solely on their Samurai but on highly trained and disciplined Ashigaru, and develop new tactics and strategies based on their massed numbers.

Perhaps, Nippon is due for its own Agincourt. But when and where and by whom it will happen I cannot say. I can only say that, when that time comes, I hope I might rely on you as a capable commander for our combined, and that I might provide provisions and supplies for such a time."

THE BATTLE OF THE HENJO TRAIL, EARLY FALL, 1556, KASAI DAIKI VS UESUGI KAGENAME AND TOOYAMA KISABUJI

KISABUJI'S ARMY - 3,025 TOTAL General's Bodyguard, 200 Yari Samurai, 300 Katana Samurai, 200 Yumi Samurai, 100 Ashigaru Spears, 100 Ashigaru Bows. DISPOSITION: WAVERING

KAGENAME'S ARMY - 4,625 TOTAL General's Bodyguard, 50 Sword Cavalry, 300 Naginata Sohei, 300 Yumi Sohei, 500 Ashigaru Spears, 500 Ashigaru Bows. DISPOSITION: EAGER

UNITED UESUGI ARMY: OVERWHELMING FORCE ADVANTAGE, MINOR CAVALRY ADVANTAGE

KASAI'S ARMY - TOTAL 3,228 - General's Bodyguard, 8 Katana Calvary, 10 Yari Cavalry, 1,565 Ashigaru Spears, 600 Ashigaru Bows, 180 Katana Ronin, 130 Yumi Ronin. MINOR NUMBERS ADVANTAGE. DISPOSITION: EAGER

27 - 6 + 2 + 3 + 12

38 TOTAL

85 + 5 + 2 + 2

94 TOTAL

94 versus 38

The raider forces are certainly shocked to see Uesugi banners bearing down on them from both sides; however, they follow their warlord's commands dutifully for he has yet to lead them astray.

The ragtag force of cavalry and ronin move south and smash into the vanguard of Tooyama's men, while the overwhelming number of spears that Daiki possesses set up a mighty spearwall upon which Kagename's forces break. Though the monks are certainly more skilled than the peasantry, they are too many and their disorganized mob style of fighting does them few favors. Worse, the volume of Kasai's archery fire whittles their ranks and tears apart their own supporting archer volleys.

The battle, as per usual, quickly turns to a bloody slog, with Daiki striking in and out of Tooyama's flanks with his cohort of cavalry. The inexperienced man simply cannot keep up– many of his samurai begin retreating from the field before being swept up into the engagement with the ronin, and take their ashigaru with him. It isn't long before Tooyama charges Kasai himself, and stands little chance– the bandit raider neatly severs his head from his shoulders as he rides on past. The smaller Uesugi army crumbles.

With that, Daiki urges the full force of his men to push out against and enflank the now bloodied Uesugi sohei, who, to their credit, fight like lions, cutting down men with vicious sweeps of their naginata and precise close-range bow shots. It simply isn't enough, however, and to cut his losses, Kagename orders a retreat to better ground, sacrificing many of his bowmen to lay down covering fire for a bloody, hasty retreat…

KASAI DAIKI: lose 400 Ashigaru Spears. Lose 200 Ashigaru Bows. Lose 30 Katana Ronin. Lose 30 Yumi Ronin.

Gain [Excess Equipment].

As a free action this turn you may roll an extra 1d100 to attempt to sway some of the now-renegade Uesugi samurai from Tooyama's army to your side.

However, your clan's very recent emergence means you have little respect in the eyes of many other clans. You take a penalty to certain diplomatic actions.

1.

Einoishi does not delay even a second, he and his retainers fly into action to block the Ikko Ikkis reemergence. It must bet their female hero, back again for vengeance. She should have fled when she had the chance.

Einoishi immediately gives an address to the peasantry, reinforcing his established propaganda of how the Ikko Ikki faith is inherently flawed and seeks to leech upon the vibrant life force of Kaga to sustain itself.

Einoishi affirms that should the heavens truly seek a form of divine retribution then they would deliver upon Einoishi himself, not the peasantry. They did not decided to remove the Ikko Ikki, the Fumetsu Clan has.

If the heavens had truly desired Kaga to be under Ikko Ikki control then the Ikko Ikki would have won the Battle of Nano, simple as that. The earthquake that has beset the mines is nothing more than another tragedy that seeks to challenge our beloved Kaga.

The Ikko Ikki believe that they can use this tragedy to strengthen themselves, now they we are weakened they seek once more to infest Kaga with their filth, to taint us with their lies. I beg you, my people, do not succumb to the Ikko Ikkis manipulation. Do not allow them to corrupt Kaga.

Einoishi has his statement and many like it dispensed to the peasantry all throughout Kaga. Calling upon his people to reject the Ikko Ikki and remain true to Kaga.

2. Meanwhile Einoishi buffs up his miltray once again, focusing this time upon his Bow Samurai.

3. Lastly, Einoishi works closely with his Sensei and his son upon the Iron Mines. Having learned his lesson, he will endeavor to keep them close. The guard for his wife and daughter have also been doubled.

1. As you finish the pottery maker, you receive word that the Nanban have sent a surprise visitor: a nobleman from afar who has heard many things about your Nipponese goods. Seeing a possible avenue of sale, you show him to your humble pottery-crafter, allowing him to see the care and caution put into each bowl, pot and bottle.

The nobleman is enraptured. Tears nearly spring to his eyes, for, so your translator says, he has never seen craftsmanship of such beauty and care. This glory must be spread to the rest of the world, to his people, to the far western land of Europe. He reaches to clasp your hands before remembering where he is, bowing deeply.

"Trade with I these pottery-things," he says, in shaky Japanese, "Ask any, any you want, or need, all me ask is that I can buy your goods."

You may accept his deal or not as a free action; accepting means you will have almost nothing to trade with the rest of Japan, but news of your goods– of Japan's craftsmanship– will spread throughout the world, far beyond the horizon…

2/3. The Chosokabe's own farms have yet to recover. Bitterly, their daimyo, Chosokabe Motochika, accepts your offer, for it is not as if they have the time to raise silkworms anyway. Great shame is yours– but it can be cleansed if you slaughter these disloyal pigs!

[Kenjutsu] - It is easier to recruit sword units. Sword units have a +.2 modifier to their force. This doesn't apply to cavalry.

AGENTS:

TRAITS: [We Will Not Bow] - Matsu warriors are fierce and unyielding, carving through their foes like a sword through paper. Penalties for being outnumbered are reduced, and your army has higher morale than usual. It is easier for you to lose honor, however, and you face the very real prospect of rebellion if you find yourself kowtowing too often.

TRAITS:

[Prodigial Architect] - You are a renowned castle-builder. You gain a +5 to building and maintaining infrastructure and get a +5 when fighting siege battles on either side. However, your clan's very recent emergence means you have little respect in the eyes of many other clans. You take a penalty to certain diplomatic actions.

1. Lord Einoishi looks out over the cold landscape of Kaga, normally the beautiful sight of a snow laden Kaga would set him at ease and refresh his mind, however, with the Ikko Ikki cultists attempting to worm their way into his beloved land ocne again, Einoishi can know no rest.

The Lord of Kaga issues another speech ,carefully outlying the ill effects of the Ikko Ikki faith, and denouncing the religion as a spiritual parasite upon the fine people of Kaga, however, more importantly Einoishi begins posting bounties for information leading to the arrest of Ikko Ikki cultists. Lord Einoishi shall be certain to reward his heard working and loyal citizens. As an additional bonus, anyone who can bring Einoishi information that leads to the arrest of the Ikko Ikki’s female hero shall be made into a retainer of Kaga.

Lord Einoishi makes it a point to warn his men to take all tips with a grain of salt, for we never know when the vile Ikko Ikki may attempt an ambush. Each investigator must approach each tip with caution and keep records of who gives these tips. No investigator is allowed to attempt an arrest by themselves.

2. Although the lord of Kaga is tirelessly working to uproot the Ikko Ikki he has not forgotten about his recovering son, Einoishi makes a point to check in on his son as well as his former teacher. Lord Einoishi puts on a reassuring face, determined to not allow his stress and fatigue bleed over into his son’s recuperation. Einoishi asks his son if there are any study materials or anything else that he desires. Einoishi also speaks with his teacher to ask how his heir’s recuperation is going.

3. Lord Einoishi is most pleased with the progress being made upon the iron mines. Accompanied by his entourage of bodyguards and a small contingent of Samurai Einoishi visits the constructions site to assist its completion in any way he can, as well as to personally congratulate the workers.

This presents them a particularly disastrous situation; either they waste a great deal of resources scouring and burning their own land to my satisfaction, or they refuse, granting me a valid Casus Bellum and bringing them grave dishonor upon the publication of their refusal - thereby allowing me to unite the Island and bringing a good deal of upstanding Samurai looking for a cause to my banner with it.

Of course, I'm going to take his lands soon enough either way, and I will look honorable doing so regardless. There is nothing these rebels could have done more to my benefit than flee into the arms of the Chosokabe.

HARUNO ISAHIDE: 1,235 TOTAL: General's Bodyguard, 300 Ashigaru Spears, 400 Ashigaru Bows, 90 Katana Samurai, 40 Yari Samurai. MORALE: DISMAYED.

LAST STAND IS IN EFFECT.

15-2 = +13

52 TOTAL

83 VS 52

The Daiki raiders descend upon the city with weapons at the ready and warcries upon their lips. While the defenders lay down volley upon volley of arrow fire onto the oncoming tide of bandits, they are unable to make much of a dent in their numbers: they break clamber over the walls and break through the gates with relative ease, and it is then that the slaughter begins in earnest. True to what their leader commands, they do not burn, but they do rape and steal their way through the city, shaking off their fatigue from the long march to slaughter defenders by the dozen, thankful that the hot blood spilled warms their numb, freezing hands.

In short order, the raiders cut their way right to the tenshu, where Isahide makes his stand, blade ready, bodyguard standing by. He does not gain an honorable death: spearmen swarm him and his retinue and just stab them to death, with one scarred, bloodied ronin cleaving away his head and holding it triumphantly as the Daiki "flag" is brought up and the Uesugi flag is torched to cinders.

Musashi is yours.

Lose 400 Ashigaru Spears. Lose 200 Ashigaru Bows. Lose 20 Katana Ronin. Lose 20 Yumi Ronin.

DAIMYO NAME: Kinami Naoko

CLAN: Kinami, nominal vassals of the Ashikaga Shogunate

BACKGROUND: Naoko has only recently come into adulthood. Fourteen years old and still scarcely more than a boy, he owes his position of Daimyo to his aging uncle - a man who has protected the young heir nigh obsessively for eight long years ever since the young lord's father died under suspicious circumstances.

Largely sheltered inside his family's stronghold, Naoko has not yet learned how to be an especially effective leader of men - but having been present at court for more of his life than not, he is a darling to courtiers as far away as the Kyoto and Kyushu, having received and treated with all sorts of dignitaries passing through his family's territory as they make their way inland from the coast. His grip on the diplomatic rituals of the Japanese nobility may well be second to none, and some of the best tutors money can buy have found themselves endeared to the young Daimyo's wide-eyed willingness to learn what they have to impart, whether that be numeracy, accounting, agriculture, architecture or the fine arts of calligraphy and poetry.

As he grows older, however, he becomes increasingly aware that not all outside the castle walls is as peaceful as his doting uncle and blissfully ignorant courtiers would have him believe. Clashes between nobles threaten to consume the entire island nation in destructive bloodshed, and while Naoko hopes to uncover what happened to his father all those years ago, his court - and especially his uncle - hope just to weather the coming storm.

DOMAINS: Kii

BATTLE OF INABA: EARLY WINTER, 1556. INABA CHIKAYOSHI VERSUS YAMATO KATATAKE

99 VS 21

It is a slaughter, quick and simple. The Yamato encircle the retreating Inaba and close in for a swift and savage strike. As the light dies, so do the Inaba defenders: culled by the score by arrows, crushed beneath hooves and chariot wheels, skewered by spears and laid low by blinding lashes of the sword. To their credit, they expect no quarter and fight to the last, even if such a last stand consists of flailing helplessly against a bristling wall of gore-slicked yari.

In perhaps ten minutes it is all over. The Inaba lay dead. And a clear road to their capital presents itself.

YAMATO: lose 60 ashigaru spears. Lose 2 Chariots. Lose 20 Ashigaru Bows.

TRAITS: [Untempered] - Naoko is young– some may quietly argue that he is too young. While this means that his foes will grow fat on hubris and have much to lever against him, this also means that he has quite a bit of untapped potential. Researching all abilities is easier for you. However, you are somewhat reliant on the aid and experience of your Uncle to properly manage your domain, and you take a diplomatic penalty to certain actions or with certain lords on account of your age and the… questionable circumstances in how you came to power.

1/2. You waste no time and crush the rebels underfoot. Though the damage is done, there is, certainly, very little threat of continued revolt or insurrection. Mounting the heads of the traitorous dogs on spikes across your road does that.

3. Of course, mounting their heads along the roads also hampers the progress of repairs and renovations. Such efforts stall, for the time being.

1. Einoishi's speech hits a nerve with many of his constituents, and they, indubitably, spread such word to the people. The Ikko must not be allowed to continue spreading: they must be stopped before more tragedy rains down upon all.

2. The resurgence of the Ikko Ikki has given Hiruishi some measure of resolve: he has a goal to work towards and has, at least partially, put aside his own pain and grief. For now.

[You can do no more for your son. Further actions to cheer him up will be wasted.]

3. Einoishi's visit inspires the workers to greater toil, and the building is completed posthaste. Gain [Iron Mines], which, combined with a smithery, can give you superior arms and armor.

1. Trading Port 7/10. As the cold winds roll in, it is harder and harder to properly work so close to the freezing sea…

2. However, perhaps the allure of a warm castle drives the men to greater fervor in their construction elsewhere. Shiro Awachi is finished, and the "coronation" is held on the winter solstice, overseen by many priests. Surely, this is a triumph that Awachi should be proud of!

Gain [Shiro Awachi], a proper fortress that will stall unrest and give you a large defensive bonus when fighting in Awa.

3. The Chosokabe return your missive with a very simple letter that states, in no uncertain terms, that Awachi Katuso certainly should not risk his already frail health by making threats he cannot properly enforce in such a cold winter. What's more, said biting cold stalls your training attempts.

The Chosokabe have spat in your face. They will not work with you. War, it seems, may be the only recourse, unless you seek to take this up with the Shogun.

1/2/3. Anti-Sabotage Tactics 4/8.

1/2. The man graciously accepts, and, within weeks, he and several other curious nanban are already milling about in your manor house, conversing with your retainers, sharing their knowledge and eagerly drinking up any that you offer them. And they snatch up your pottery almost as fast as you can churn it out: it's already caught on in their own colonies, let alone their actual homeland.

The Shogun approves, perhaps a bit cooly, of this arrangement, though few clans are willing to really give your offer of a swap-meet any serious thought.

You gain 2 ticks of progress on your next attempt to research an Ability.

3. Silk Farm 1/10

1. Military Fleet 1/6

2. Gem Mine 3/8. The men are eager to plunder those glittering stones…

3. Noto Quarry 7.6/8. Work continues, certainly, but it's a bit of a chore given the ice, the wind, the snow…
