I've never had steam friends, but when I mentioned /improve/ I meant the discord group. I've been going there regularly for just over a year using the text chat, but on voice chat I'm as shit at talking as I am in real life.
I've only done it a handful of times though, and besides that I've never spoken to anyone online in my life, but those times have pretty much just been me giving the odd one or two word responses and the other person swiftly getting the impression I don't want to talk to them. If ever a third person or more comes in, that's it, they soon forget I'm even there and have a conversation between themselves while I can only sit there silently in frustration.
Also I wouldn't consider anyone there my friend, I think some of them are alright but I can't see "people I've never met and only spoken to over the internet" as being comparable to real life friends.

Just depends on the discord I guess, sounds like that one is good for you but it isn't really friend/hanging out orientated. There are lots of anime and/or robot related discords of varying quality out there if you can find them, you might find someone to chat to on there.

That's true, we generally get along and there's a lot of discussion and banter, but we're not a "group of friends" at all. The only interest we share is self-improvement, and even then our current situations, individual goals, and opinions vary to such a degree that most of us would never interact with each other under normal circumstances.

Eh, I'm trying to avoid that kind of thing honestly. This year has been mixed for me, mostly positive but everything fell apart a bit after I started working in September. I'm definitely not doing as well right this moment as I was this time last year, but I've thrown myself into a lot of new and uncomfortable experiences like working out, giving eye contact, voice chatting online, learning to drive, and working full time. I didn't stick at any of those things for more than 3 months each though, so listing them off feels pretty empty, but it should be easier to get back into them now that I've gotten past the "diving into unknown territory" part.

I'm also currently a friendless NEET that refuses to use most social media, but that doesn't mean we have to be this way forever.
