The average salary for professions like accountants, mechanics, programmers, computer technicians, teachers and teachers is between 45 and 65 grand a year depending on specific profession. Australian statistics tend to present the median wage as the "average" wage because the real average is much higher, higher than the averages for all of the fields mentioned before.
What are all the people earning so much money working as? Especially with the mining boom having gone down, it seems strange the average would be pushed up so much. Are these people doing anything actually productive?
