Intention: A general thread for computer questions, show-offs, speculation and news. As to not clog up the NEET/Wagie Generals. Ozbargain, Aliexpress or Ebay links are encouraged, especially for the NEETs who need to save every cent.

What OS are you running? Hardware? Have you got any projects that you are thinking of?

I'm running Manjaro with i3 as another person had suggested from here, switching to Lubuntu soon. Gonna swap out parts through Gumtree or buy brand new possibly.

Just switched from Arch to Debian today, guess I've gone full circle now.

Only problem I've got is I can't get it to display my volume on the i3bar. The "vol" part I want is there but the percentage isn't, however I've put the correct device in the i3config file. Got both pulse and alsa installed, kinda lost.

Also noob quiestion, I've downloaded firefox quantum on my desktop and laptop, how/where do I put it so I can launch it from the terminal (or, more aptly, dmenu/rofi)? Do I have to give it a bash alias or just put it in /usr/sbin or something

You should be able to just say firefox in the terminal or in dmenu to launch firefox.Sometimes fixes are the simplest solutions? How did you install Firefox? I normally just use pacman/apt-get or the included GUI Package Manager.

Been using Windows7 on my main with Mint 18.2 on my laptop. I wanted to dual boot on my desktop so I attempted to make my windows partition smaller (it had 50GB free) and it only let me reduce it 10GB. I then made a partition 10GB large, and then installed Kubuntu but I quickly ran out of space, I'll continue fucking around with the partitions trying to make extra space, might then try another distro as I didn't like kubuntu, might use manjaro XFCE.

>>186424

Either extract it to your home folder or the /usr/ folder. If you want it to be 'installed' (a icon shows in the menus) you need to create a .desktop file for it and put it in the applications folder, I had to do this when installing icecat.

Yeah I did it through pacman.

Are you guys using toaster PC's?I'm guessing most of us are NEETs so do you run with pre-owned parts? I bought a 1tb WD Blue when I got my desktop from gumtree for about $50, monitor included. The hard drive it came with is 250gb but I don't trust pre-owned hard drives, thinking of buying a processor but I haven't checked the motherboard yet to see what's compatible. Got 2gb ram here. The laptop has more but my posture is terrible on the laptop on my desk.

I dont know alot about computers and networks but if i have firefox open and then chrome open, are the cookies shared between them.

Do browers have any connection between each other. If i have tor open does that effect it?

I have a XPS13 and i'm never buying a dell again running win8.1. I think when i get some cash im going to get either a mac because this xps is a piece of shit that crashed soundcards/drivers when ever you close the lid. But i also want to get a huyge tower and mine shitcoins/edit videos

The cookies aren't shared, no.

If you have tor browser open and a regular browser open, the cookies remain separate, but the spooks can correlate traffic to identify your IP.

mate some driver issues is a fucking understatement. Poor customer serivce, and dell being cunts is the big issue. this computer is a fucking lemon but they did want to replace or refund it, just "fixed it". The sound card will crash literally everytime i shut the lid, if im doing some music and then go to get on the train. I have to fucking restart the whole thing, any preloaded webpages gone. The fucking wifi card is shit, and has proprietary software so i dont think i can use linux. Its basically an internet, word, excel normie machine. Im just going to cop a mac, not have to fuck around when i just need to check email.

If you have fixed the item several times under warranty and there are still problems take it to the ACCC. The item is still defective and is not of acceptable quality experiencing, which is what I would classify as a major defect given that it seems to be fucked. That would entitle you to a refund as a remedy (the solution you choose) in the payment that you originally paid (not a store credit or credit from the manufacturer). If paid for it recently with a credit card or pressed credit for the transaction, Visa offers a small but reasonable warranty that you should look into.

Switched to Lubuntu, I don't think I'm gonna bother trying to setup i3. I'm a bit lazy and I'm probably gonna mess something up so I'll stick with lxde.
